Judge Dredd Year One: Omnibus, by Matt Smith, Al Ewing, Michael Carroll

Three celebrated Judge Dredd writers take you back to Dredd’s first year on the streets of Mega- City One as a full-eagle Judge, in three thrilling novellas.

Bred to dispense Justice, the young Dredd is not the wizened veteran we know, but a Judge with built-in determination and little experience. In City Fathers, the brutal murder of a Justice Department-sanctioned spy uncovers something new and dangerous in the sector’s murky black market. Unless Dredd can stop it, chaos will be unleashed.

In Cold Light of Day, a savage killing spree results in the deaths of two highlyregarded Judges, and many consider Dredd to be responsible: a decision he made five years earlier – while he was still a cadet – has come back to haunt him. The third story in the collection will debut in this collection and is guaranteed to thrill.

Young Dredd
By Nick Brett
Omnibus edition of three stories that, I think, were issued as e-books. This is a young Dredd in his early days as a Judge. Given that Dredd almost has no personality and is a stoic and immovable vision of the law, I imagine it makes him tough to write about, but somehow the authors here have done a good job of balancing plots and keeping Dredd’s iconic single-mindedness to the fore. This is helped by Dredd’s clone twin who reflects a much darker side of being a Judge.

City Fathers – It looks like a new drug, possibly of alien origin, is killing people and Dredd must investigate and resolve before it gets out of hand.

Cold Light of Day – Nice balance of the young Judge here and a flashback to being a cadet. As senior Judges are murdered it looks like a decision made years ago could be coming back to haunt the newly qualified Judge.

Wear Iron – A career criminal is forced into an alliance with someone very dark indeed. Probably my favourite story, some clever mis-direction, some of the dark humour of the comic series and good use of the Mega-City One culture and attitudes.

So, a satisfying omnibus, clever treatment of the character without taking anything away from the firmly established Judge we know so well. The authors here know their subject well and that is reflected in three very entertaining stories. Good fun and recommended for fans of the Judge.

He Is The Law! (Even in his cadet years.)
By Christopher
I'm really enjoying reading this book. I wasn't sure how a comic book property would translate to just a book from, but this worked really well actually. Any true Dredd fan should definitely give this book a read through, you won't be disappointed.

Mixed Bag
By Lawgiver2000
I'll give a quick rundown of the 3 stories but would like to state plainly these are prose novels NOT comics. I find the title to this collection very misleading considering it's starring a comic book character and uses the terms "Year One" and "Omnibus" which are two phrases used frequently in comics. To further add to the confusion Matt Smith has actually written a Judge Dredd Year One Comic for IDW, but I digress.

I found the opening story "City Fathers" by Matt Smith to be exceedingly slow, humorless, and lacking in action. Simply put, it is not very good, nor does it bear the slightest resemblance to what has made for a good Judge Dredd story. I also felt his characterization of Rico Dredd was lacking. Smith portrays him as an overweight burnout even though he would be fresh out of the academy in his first year, which doesn't make sense and was not threatening in the slightest.

"Cold Light of Day" by Mike Carroll is a step in the right direction. It features a cross-Meg race by crazy biker gangs which is more in line with the Mega City I'm familiar with. The problem with this story is it is plagued with uninteresting flashbacks that seemed to bog down the finale of the story just as it was picking up speed.

"Wear Iron" by Al Ewing is easily the best and most enjoyable. I thought of this one as "Rico's Big Score" as Rico puts a crew together to knock off a Fatties competition. This is the only story that passes muster. I love how sinister Rico is, and how powerful his brother Joe seems by the way he's portrayed. The opening scene being a great way to introduce a legend.
