Another Great Addition to The Kyrennei Series

In the third book of the Kyrennei Series, The Taken and the Free, author Arie Farnam brings the reader into the secret world of the Addin and continues to weave a story of war, rebellion, and the struggle for freedom led by J. Company. For the first two books of the series, much was said about the Addin and their ability to bend others to their will, but the inner workings of their organizations and politics remained hidden. This time around, we get a closer look at how they operate and what it means to be "taken." Farnam continues to show her skill as an author, developing the cast of characters that already populate her world and once again packing every scene full of emotion. The novel is full of the things that made the previous ones so enjoyable, with some notable exceptions, and makes for a another solid entry in the series.
Up to this point in the series, the Addin have been portrayed mostly through second-hand knowledge and anecdotes. We've seen a some of their capabilities and learned some of the ways that they influence events on a global scale. Here we're getting a newer, more intimate look at their operations and the people that run them. One scene, which ended up being one of my favorites in the book, follows two members of J. Company as they go undercover in the guise of Addin officials. Jace and Rick are forced to mingle with some of the Addin, and it's a struggle for both of them (along with the reader) to listen to the carefree attitudes that the Addin possess regarding the cruel acts of violence and degradation they've been carrying out. To be in the same room as these people, and, by necessity, to smile along as though nothing's wrong, is a struggle that actually causes Rick to feel violently ill afterward. It's a perfect example of what's sometimes referred to as the banality of evil: to have the capacity for such horrendous acts, and yet also have the ability to shrug them away with ease, to see these acts as a simple extension of a job. The Addin do not see themselves as evil, but instead consider all that they do as part of their mission. They enjoy what they do, because it gives them a sense of purpose and makes them part of a cause.
Much like the second book did, this one opens up the narrative further by giving the reader new perspectives. A character from the first book returns, but now we're seeing events from her POV: that of an Addin-controlled person, one whose thoughts and actions are influenced by the taking. It's a fascinating look at how the average Addin mind works, and it provides a much-needed look at how being under the influence of their dark power shapes a person's thoughts. This was definitely one of the highlights of the novel.
There were a couple of differences between this book and the first two that make this, arguably, the weakest in the series thus far. The first was the pacing. While I never lost interest in the story, there were some parts that seemed to move slower than the rest. The last chunk of the book is an exception to this, as the narrative picks up some serious steam and delivers an explosive ending.
The other difference that caught my attention was the significant drop in the fantasy elements that were introduced at the beginning of the series. This is not something that everyone would pick up on, or even care about, but for me it was a little disappointing. Aside from one very important discovery by Aranka that involved the taken, which is too good to spoil here, the book very rarely dipped into the fantastical/supernatural aspects of the Kyrennei and the Addin. Most of the book was focused heavily on the fears and hopes of the characters, and their increasingly complicated relationships with each other, which left very little room to explore the resurgence of the Kyrennei, their transformations, and Aranka's glimpses into the past through visions of the ancient Kyrennei. I was hoping for more of that, since it was so well done throughout the earlier volumes of the series.
All things considered, these were minor issues and didn't take much away from my enjoyment of the novel. As always, the writing was superb and the characters came alive on the pages. The Taken and the Free delivers tons of emotion, some great action, and more of the fascinating characters that pulled me into the series from the start.

The Taken And The Free is book three of the brilliant #YA thriller series called The Kyrennei. It is about a minority community of people from around the world who have been oppressed by a greedy powerful group called the Addin who mind control their followers.
The Kyrennei have a powerful weapon with which they can fight back but it is in the form of small dis-formed child like creatures. The key to their hope of freedom lies with one young girl called Aranka. In book one she discovered her powers and escaped from a high security medical testing centre, in book two she set off across wilderness to escape being hunted and found by the Addin. In this book she has once more been captured and her followers believe she is dead and lost to their cause.
However the leader of a devious Addin faction, faked her death for his own use. She is taken to a secret base on Kosova to be brain-washed, but she refuses to give in, and later discovers a new power which can be used against the Addin.
These books are compelling reads and are about fighting for freedom, each one step forward is a win against oppression. The theme is very topical with the mass migrations of people in the world today as they flee war and power struggles and search for peace and the ability to freely live their lives.

another excellent entry in the series

I recently started reading this series and have been really enjoying all the books. Like the previous two this one doesn't disappoint but offers solid characterization and a gripping plot. The battle between the Addin who control the world and the freedom fighters rages on with the main character, Aranka, still trapped in the middle. This book in many ways allows the different characters to grow in new ways and directions, and we are given some interesting insight into the way that the Addin themselves work and the way that the upper levels of the resistance operate undercover, which was really fascinating. We also see Aranka come close to losing someone very close to her and then find a way to save him that shows the Addin are not as all powerful as they want everyone to believe. All together a great story which - just like the previous two - leaves the reader eager for more.
