Recognizing the importance of classroom talk

Too often, teacher and student talk during instruction can appear unimportant or unplanned to the untrained eye. In "Talking About Text," Maria Nichols carefully explains and illustrates how deliberately planned classroom talk can instruct, explain, and facilitate reading comprehension. Her explanations are clear, logical, and make use of actual classroom interaction to illustrate the concepts and lessons she describes. From whole class discussion to partnership work to "turn-and-talk" during read-alouds, the examples in this book will help all teachers create reading classrooms where "purposeful talk" can help students develop their ability to read well, to read deeply, and to love reading.

This book showed me how to set up small-group discussion groups in my classroom. I can see now how to guide my students through this learning process. I can't wait to try out these strategies with my new class of students in the fall!

Easy to Implement in Your Classroom

Given the vitriolic nature of discourse in our nation at the moment, it is vital that we teach children how to hold civil conversations about important topics. Maria Nichols has crafted a book that lays out a course of action for teachers. She breaks discourse into two parts--the 'content' and the 'talk'. She then lays out how to address each of those concepts with grade level parameters. This book is easy to read and easy to implement in your classroom. It will give you a new way to think about how to help students give voice to their ideas.
