About the Author
Katherine Jean Pope was born in Ashtabula, Ohio in 1981, and grew up near Cincinnati. She graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 2008 and spent the next five years traveling and teaching English in Taiwan, Thailand, and China before returning to the states. Muse is her first published novel, though she is hard at work writing more adventures.

This is truly the kind of book that keeps you up late at night--because you can't put it down. I am an avid reader and it has been a long time since I have read a book that demanded my attention the way that Muse does.
This is the story of how books come to be, but it is so much more than that. We meet Mina, the Muse, at a coffee shop and right from the start she is instantly the unknowing heroine that we fall in love with. When we meet the next major character, Max, we are unclear whether or not we like him. He seems sinister. It turns out, we are smart to be suspect of him! It is also difficult to gage whether or not Shade, the court executioner, is going to be a "goody guy" or a "bad guy" but the more you read, the more it becomes clear that he is on our team!
The story follows Mina as she attempts to get her magic book back from Max. Without it, Mina cannot write her story and fulfill her destiny as a muse. Along the way, she has many other trials and tribulations, including attempts to return the werewolf and fairy king to their rightful thrones. There truly are a lot of twists and turns along Mina's journey and there were so many times I thought I knew what was going to happen next--but I was wrong.
My only teeny, tiny complaint is that the story ended too soon! I would have loved to have read more and I sincerely hope that there is a sequel to this story.
Pope is brilliant. Her creativity just doesn't end. How she ever dreamed up this enchanted world, these magical creatures, this incredible journey is beyond me. Even the concept itself--how is a story born?--is as imaginative as any plot I have read in a very long time. It is hard to believe that this book has not been picked up by a major publisher yet. It should be.
I will be recommending this book to every adult I know who can read (and that's most of them.)

You wont want to put Muse down

Before i started to read this book i was afraid that i would not be able to read or review it objectively, I told myself that i needed to write a review that would make you want to read it, that i had to make sure that i did not come across as biased and have someone think that i sugar coated the review. yea, i know silly, reviews are stressful. don't judge me!
I know the author and i am familiar with some of her characters. I know that she is a great story teller but i didn't know how it would translate to book form.
I didn't expect to love this book. I thought i was going to finish the story and tell my friend what a nice job she did putting things together.
I thought i knew her characters, but i only know them as who they are when they were introduced to me, there is so much history and depth there. i had no idea how intricate their world is and i know that i have only scratched the surface.
When you step into MUSE you won't want to leave and if you have to leave all you can do is think about getting back.
I had a moment when i was burning through the words, flipping pages as fast as my Kindle button would allow, where i forgot that i was reading my friends book and that was when i knew that she had done it, and i had never been more proud of her than in that moment.
So, is my judgement clouded, is my review biased? I don't know, what i do know is that it is all that is ever expected of me. It Is Honest.
I can't wait to read what happens next!
I want more.

Enjoyable and Refreshing

I started reading this story for fun and was hooked immediately! I started the book and COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN. My husband was out of town and I promised I'd water the lawn. I finished the book and realized it was 9pm and it was dark and the lawn wasn't watered, and I hadn't eaten....
Pope kept the action going and (most importantly), she made the love story believable. You knew they were going to fall in love as a sub plot, but Pope surprised me by grounding the relationship in respect and taking the time to show how relationships (not just the love ones) grow and develop. She spares us from an "aha! I've loved you all along!" romance and sweeps us into something more realistic and enjoyable.
Her characters learn, grow, and sometimes disappoint you as heroes, but gain the reader's respect since sometimes, people aren't heroic. The plot grows and twists as the main character matures and works to solve her own problems. Her transformation is believable and endearing. I kept thinking I was at the climax, and then it kept going, which is the best kind of book. Pope's addition of adorable side characters that flit in and out and the not 100% good or evil side characters are all refreshing. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.
