Cardinal (Citizen Saga, Book 2): A Dystopian Romantic Suspense Series, by Nicola Claire

Have you been a model Citizen today?

Lena Carr is a Citizen who does not exist. Being invisible can have its advantages, but not when the Chief Overseer knows what your alias is. She can no longer use the gift her father left her.

But she also can't walk the streets as the Elite she was born to be...

The Cardinals are closing in, and one in particular has Selena in his sights. With revolution on the Citizen's minds and hope in the form of a rebellious Elite exhibiting non-model behaviour, the Overseers crack down on dissension. Causing chaos on the streets and blood to flow.

For his "Zebra" Trent Masters would do anything. Risk his life. Face the increasingly sentient drones head on. Kill. But there's one thing he will never do - jeopardise the rebellion. Funny thing about love though, sometimes it can make liars of us all.

But that's not his only dilemma. Selena's up to something, and if Trent knows his Elite, he's sure it's going to be reckless. Throw in a manipulative benefactor and a decimated revolutionary base and Trent can't tell which way holds more danger. But the Cardinal, hell bent on his destruction, sure looks like he's in the lead.

Citizen versus Cardinal. The battle has begun.

Review
"THIS BOOK WAS FANTASTIC! I actually enjoyed it much better than the first one, and I wasn't sure that could have been possible, but it was...Now I'm super excited to read the next and final book in this trilogy!" ~ Whitney Martin (Shooting Stars Reviews)

"Nicola Claire definitely has a knack for keeping the story rolling at a steady pace, while managing to include all of the conversations and private moments that make this so much more than just characters being bounced around in a world of action. The storyline pulled me in, bt the two main characters have kept me absorbed. I enjoyed the first book, I've loved this second book... I can't wait to get my hands on the third instalment, I bet Lena and Trent have a ton of tricks up their sleeves..." ~ Charmaine (Once Upon A Book Blog ) "Nicola has a way with words and storytelling that truly captivates the reader and drags you into the beautiful worlds that she creates." ~ Open Book Society

From the Author
Big cities fascinate me. From their infrastructure, to their roadways, to their housing requirements and park designs. In particular, I find it amazing how so many people can live on such a small parcel of land. I've visited London, Berlin, Sydney, Los Angeles, Singapore, Paris, Rome - some pretty big cities with intricate and brilliant city designs and massive populations living in splendid harmony. And I loved every single one of them.

Mix into this fascination a love of science fiction from when I was a small child, throw in a few modern day newsworthy concepts, and you have a meting hot-pot of vibrant colour and multiculturalism in a land area no bigger than Lake Taupo (my home town).

The Citizen Saga came to me while on holiday in one of those big cities and it just built from there. A type of awe laced with a what-if scenario, that continued to grow inside my head until I had no choice but to put pen to paper and get it all out. In its most basic description, the story is about a strictly controlled nation cut-off from the rest of the world, and those remarkable people who rise up and fight back against the oppression in search of something more.

It's fantasy based on reality with a mixture of science fiction and a grounding in romance and suspense. And I loved the Citizen Saga World as much as I loved those wonderful "real" big cities I've visited over the years.

About the Author
Nicola Claire lives in beautiful Taupo, New Zealand with her husband and two young boys. She's tried her hand at being a paramedic, bank teller and medical sales representative, (not all necessarily in that order), but her love of writing keeps calling her back. She has a passion for all things supernatural, spiced up with a good dollop of romance - as long as they include strong characters, alpha males and capable females, and worlds which although make-believe are really quite believable in the end. There's nothing better than getting caught up in a compelling, intriguing and romantic book. When she's not writing or reading, she's out on her family boat at Lake Taupo, teaching her young boys to fish, showing them the beauty that surrounds them in nature and catching some delicious trout for dinner. Creating rich worlds with dynamic characters and unexpected twists that shock and awe has been pure bliss for this author. And just as well, because there's a lot more story yet to tell...

THIS BOOK WAS FANTASTIC!
By Whitney(Shooting Stars Reviews)
ARC from author for review!

Cardinal begins not too long after Elite ends. The rebels are down several members, and a main base of operation. The person they are staying with as of now doesn't exactly have their trust, but they are doing what they can. Things between Lena and Trent are coming to a head when these two can't seem to fight the attraction any longer, along with having their trust tested. Trent and Lena have to go through a whole lot of craziness. But hopefully it will all be worth it. Especially when all of the rebels come to realize that the "Zebra" is a very important person in this war that's coming.

THIS BOOK WAS FANTASTIC! I actually enjoyed it much better than the first one, and I wasn't sure that could have been possible, but it was. I loved the relationship between Trent and Lena. They actually started showing a lot of emotion towards each other, and it was amazing. Not only that but every one using the "Zebra" as the calling card of the war was just amazing as well!

During Cardinal you could really feel a lot of the things Lena was feeling. She was so unsure, scared, and worried about everything but she still managed to stand STRONG through out it all! She's a very brave fierce female and I loved her.

Trent is an awesome alpha male, who I was afraid would let me down but by the end he had me almost in tears with the way things were going.

Now I'm super excited to read the next and final book in this trilogy!

No sophomore slump here!
By Kerry
I tend to be underwhelmed by the second book in a trilogy, but that certainly was NOT the case here! This book seemed to have more action than the first, and I was on the edge of my seat the whole time!

I am also growing to love the characters even more! First of all, you can see them falling for each other even more, which helped make the book for me. Lena is also growing as a character, getting more confidence and realizing what she truly wants. Trent is also transforming from just a rebel leader to a character that has so much more depth. And the supporting characters are great as well!

Can't wait for book 3!

Just can't get enough of Lena's awesomeness!
By Charm (Once Upon a Book Blog)
As we’re thrown back into the building rebellion in this unsettling dystopian world, it’s becoming clearer and clearer than man is no longer pulling all of the strings in this place, it's a terrifying thought. Trent and Lena KNOW they need to fight on for change, their numbers are down and they are the most wanted citizens of Wanmei. But they need to keep going. There is a shift coming, more and more they see how there are many who in growing dissidence are willing to make a stand. Black and white hair-dos here, a zebra painted there...

I enjoyed this book even more than I did the first, I think a big draw for me in this one, was that I was beginning to see more of the relationship growing between Trent and Lena. I love these two together, their chemistry was always there sizzling away under whatever situation they were in, they were prickly as a couple of homicidal hedgehogs half the time, but slowly they are beginning to open up to one another... I loved watching this relationship unfold amongst the heart racing action they were constantly thrown (and throwing themselves) into.

Lena still kicks total butt in my opinion. That girl can do no wrong, she is awe inspiring even to the most hardened guys in their team. She knows what she needs to do, so she goes and tackles it head on, ok so sometimes she should take that advice for her personal problems... and once in a while she should probably stop and clue someone in on her plans, but that is what makes her so fantastic in my opinion. She is SO ridiculously clever. I'm all about female characters being self-sufficient and able to do anything anyone else can and she totally nails that and then some... I really loved how we still are learning more and more about her past and her secrets, the more I learn the more I've been able to flesh out a complete picture of her in my mind.

I have to make special mention of Trent here because I LOVE him. When he gets so frustrated with Lena you can feel it vibrating off him. When he follows her into every life threatening situation and backs her up completely you 100% believe his resolve... And in amongst all of the rebellion leader stuff you see the glimpses of the man Lena is falling for. He proved himself to her more than once, and trust me when I say you'll almost have a heart attack at the end of the book over these two.

Nicola Claire definitely has a knack for keeping the story rolling at a steady pace, while managing to include all of the conversations and private moments that make this so much more than just characters being bounced around in a world of action. The storyline pulled me in, but the two main characters have kept me absorbed. I enjoyed the first book, I've loved this second book... I can't wait to get my hands on the third instalment, I bet Lena and Trent still have a ton of tricks up their sleeves...
