The Northern Star: The Beginning, which Examiner hailed as on of the "Top 5 Indie-Published Books You Haven't Read, But Should," showed us a violent, technology dependent world where the Coalition--the combined might of China, the U.S., and the EU--occupied oil-rich countries to take all that remained. The Northern Star: Civil War takes us further down the rabbit hole, where the digital connectedness of our world has allowed one man to subvert nations in his quest for immortality. In the first novel, John Raimey, a crippled soldier, sacrificed himself for duty and family and became the first Tank Major, a bionic soldier powerful enough to level buildings.  His sacrifice was in vain.  Ten years later, mentally ill, estranged from his daughter, and stationed in Africa to protect the mines needed to keep cyberspace alive, he airdrops into a town where the adults are murdered and the children abducted.  What Raimey uncovers sets him on a new mission: save his daughter, no matter the cost.

"Prepare to be afraid. Be very afraid. Because even seasoned science fiction readers well versed in stories of military conflict and cyber-futures will enjoy something different in The Northern Star: Civil War . . . . With its cornerstone foundations rooted in perceptions and patterns of modern times, it's military sci-fi and futuristic cyber-reality at its best."  - D. Donovan, eBook Reviewer. Midwest Book Review

"I referred to Gullickson's The Northern Star: The Beginning as an "old school, science-fiction romp".  The Northern Star: Civil War is this and so much more." 4.5/5 stars - The New Podler Review of Books "There is so much complexity and breadth of character that I kept reading just one more chapter." - Alex McGilvery, Celtic Frog Reviews

"Like its predecessor, THE CIVIL WAR is morally complicated, gritty, brutal . . . . It continues the series' refusal to give out easy answers to either today's or tomorrow's problems. - IndieReader

"Gullickson's prose is solid and clean. The plot and characters have substantial depth to satisfy an avid sci-fi reader like myself . . . . The technologies such as the military's bionic soldiers and the Mindlink are not just fascinating, but do have the credible possibilities to exist." - Lit Amri, Reader's Favorite

"Amidst this harsh impersonal landscape of nodes and circuits, Gullickson portrays the interpersonal relationships between characters with care and compassion, underlining the profound importance of human connection, above all others." - Book-Bot Reviews

Credible Science Fiction
By Grady Harp
Mike Gullickson is a California based writer, fairly new to the literary scene, and a writer who has taken his long obsession with science fiction (from age twelve he states `if it was gothic, horror, science fiction, fantasy or gory, I was into it.') But what makes Gullickson unique among writers of science fiction and futurism (and one of the primary reasons this reader could better appreciate a genre not usually to my liking) is his ability to create a backdrop for his stories that is anchored in reality, people or places or situations to which we can easily relate to the point that his stories become all the more terrifying because they are more than feasible possibilities. He has addressed our current dependence on oil and the global struggles of control of that dwindling resource, underlining that very real situation coupled with the rising incidents of terrorism and technological advances that simultaneously glut the media with images of terrorist acts and critical conditions distance us form confrontations in real time by viewing it all through the protective and poorly understood shield of the internet information source.

Having the advantage of reading Mike's first novel in this series seems important enough to the full appreciation of this second installment Civil War to bring the reader new to this realm up to date. THE NORTHERN STAR: THE BEGINNING opened in 2058 (actually a Prologue began in 2048), a time with oil depletion has created the battleground for the super powers of China, the US, and the EU who have united in a military fashion to occupy all of the oil rich countries, a situation that has driven the masses into ghettoes, stimulated even further the Terror wars to the point where terrorist acts occur daily in the streets of the remaining cities. The only defense against this decimating progress is the creation by the corporation Mindcorp who has invented a computer based technology called Mindlink that allows people to have their mind outside their body: people can `live' in a virtual reality online. Out of this, Tank Majors (or bionic soldiers) are created to combat the powerful perpetrators - the first and primary one being John Raimey. Gullickson personalized these bionic warriors demonstrating the author's ability to create identifiable characters in a bizarre situation that helps drive his story to a surprising end. Now, in CIVIL WAR, John Raimey, the bionic Tank Major who sacrificed himself for duty and family has the ability to have the power to level buildings and more.

Without question Mike Gullickson has found that path that appeals to both sci-fi and futurists addicts as well as though of us who do not usually appreciate this genre, and much of that is due to his skill in keeping the language contemporary as he steps beyond the crises we know as reality - and just pushes reality further. Where his mind finds these incredibly credible concepts we most likely will continue to discover as he (hopefully) writes more books in this series. Hi sending pages suggest that is a strong possibility. He understands how to make the impossible possible and it works. Grady Harp, October 14

The Best Kind of Science Fiction
By Veritas Vincit
This series is the first "Steampunk" books that I've ever read, and I have to admit, I continue to be impressed, not with the uniqueness of the genre, per se, but by the perpetually engaging way that this particular author writes. Gullickson hasn't quite made a convert of me, but I will certainly read anything that he decides to put to paper. It isn't so much the characters or the plot progression, but that slightly prophetic vision of the world that he writes about with such deft skill and frightening honesty. The clash of global superpowers over dwindling resources is no longer a fantasy; we are facing the development of that reality as we speak. However, Gullickson frames his story in this highly possible future and shows such a massive amount of creativity and insight into human nature that it is impossible not to sit up and take notice. It's as if you, as a reader, are transported a century into the future and are sitting in a classroom (albeit an exciting one) and reading the recent history of our planet. It's a good way to twist up your brain and begin thinking about real issues that are at the fore of our present - and will decide our future. A book that inspires me is something I will always pass along to friends (and even strangers, when it's this good).

John Raimey continues to be a compelling and deadly protagonist that shows the human side of a universal conflict, and even though it can be argued that the world has forced him to lose his humanity, Gullickson grabs you by the throat and forces you to face the same impossible choices and almost feel the palpable pain of loss and desperation that the main character experiences...this is a book that you won't put down - not until the last page. Gullickson is a powerhouse, and might just be the sort of author who can spark some real change in society. Frightening and fantastic.....this is what science fiction is all about.

Great second installment!

The Northern Star: Civil War
Mike Gullickson

This second book in the Northern Star trilogy picks up about a decade after the closing events of The Beginning. Raimer, who sacrificed his physical humanity in the service of his country is now just the first among many Tank Majors and surrounded by Minors all of whom have undergone the radical surgery to make them into cybernetic soldiers.

The price of saving his country was losing his daughter. She sees him as a monster who abandoned her and her dying mother when they needed him the most. Raimer still fights for his country, but the ghost of his beloved wife haunts him and his handlers are concerned that he is no longer quite sane.

War in brewing on the internet as Evan tries to build himself into a god. Cynthia is the only one with a chance to stop him, but the cost is horrific.

It is easy to follow this book if you’ve read the first. It is possible to pick up the story quickly if you can’t find it, but The Beginning is well worth reading and the background makes this book more enjoyable. Civil War is one of those books that is just hard to put down. There is some much complexity and breadth of character that I kept reading just one more chapter. If anything it is superior to the first book since it builds on a world that is already established and we don’t need to learn our way around.

I recommend this book to those who like adventure and war stories that are truly futuristic.
