Have you been a model Citizen today?

Selena Carstairs has been raised an Elite. She lives the life of privileged luxury, never wanting for anything. Respected. Admired. Honoured.

But life is not what it seems...

The island of Wánměi has a strict set of rules. Be a model Citizen and all will be rewarded. Disobey the law and the consequences are dire. For Selena, the urge to defy is in her blood. Out of boredom? Or something else? But she never knew just what penalty she'd have to pay for her latest stunt.

Trent Masters is a Citizen, born and bred. The leader of a small group of revolutionaries desperately trying to free their beloved city of Wánměi. He knows a world exists beyond the island's borders. He knows a life exists without the heavy handed manipulation and tight fisted control of those in charge.

What he didn't know was that an Elite would have more chance of challenging the Overseers who control Wánměi than a rebel ever could. And he certainly wasn't expecting her to capture his heart as stealthily as she moves under the darkness of a hot and humid night.

Citizen versus Elite. The battle has begun.

From the Author
Big cities fascinate me. From their infrastructure, to their roadways, to their housing requirements and park designs. In particular, I find it amazing how so many people can live on such a small parcel of land. I've visited London, Berlin, Sydney, Los Angeles, Singapore, Paris, Rome - some pretty big cities with intricate and brilliant city designs and massive populations living in splendid harmony. And I loved every single one of them.

Mix into this fascination a love of science fiction from when I was a small child, throw in a few modern day newsworthy concepts, and you have a meting hot-pot of vibrant colour and multiculturalism in a land area no bigger than Lake Taupo (my home town).

The Citizen Saga came to me while on holiday in one of those big cities and it just built from there. A type of awe laced with a what-if scenario, that continued to grow inside my head until I had no choice but to put pen to paper and get it all out. In its most basic description, the story is about a strictly controlled nation cut-off from the rest of the world, and those remarkable people who rise up and fight back against the oppression in search of something more.

It's fantasy based on reality with a mixture of science fiction and a grounding in romance and suspense. And I loved the Citizen Saga World as much as I loved those wonderful "real" big cities I've visited over the years.

About the Author
Nicola Claire lives in beautiful Taupo, New Zealand with her husband and two young boys. She's tried her hand at being a paramedic, bank teller and medical sales representative, (not all necessarily in that order), but her love of writing keeps calling her back. She has a passion for all things supernatural, spiced up with a good dollop of romance - as long as they include strong characters, alpha males and capable females, and worlds which although make-believe are really quite believable in the end. There's nothing better than getting caught up in a compelling, intriguing and romantic book. When she's not writing or reading, she's out on her family boat at Lake Taupo, teaching her young boys to fish, showing them the beauty that surrounds them in nature and catching some delicious trout for dinner. Kindred has been a joy to write, creating a rich world with dynamic characters and paranormal twists that shock and awe has been pure bliss for this author. And just as well, because there's a lot more story yet to tell...

Why?
By Hatbox121
I so want to give this book a 4! It was fast paced, full of emotion, and had the good old government oppression that you can enjoy in a dystopian novel. The characters were interesting and not one dimensional cut outs. The world building was solid. The horror and angst was there. The interactions between the characters felt authentic, rather than the stilted odd phrasing you often see in books now. The reactions and emotions of the characters felt true. There weren't any convoluted plots or convenient plot devices that really bother me.
So why a 3? First of all, I never give a 5 unless it's exceptional. As in a classic or one that truly touched me and affected my soul. A 4 is a very solid book that I really enjoyed and had no problems. This book did have issues. Enough to drop it to a 3.5, which we all know you can't give halves on this rating system.
What are the problems? The thesaurus was in heavy use in this book. While I do enjoy a variety of words and not being talked down to in a book, this was just excessive. It read, particularly at the beginning, like an author who is trying to prove they have an extensive vocabulary. It came off more pretentious than authentic or like someone trying to increase the number of characters so they can fill a research paper for school. Beyond that there were several areas where there were misspellings and incorrect word choices. While I could decipher the meaning, it jarred me out of the story enough that it did lower my rating. For a book with such use of a thesaurus, one would expect that grammar would be correct. There aren't extensive errors, but the fact that it tries to read like thesaurus gone wild and still has incorrect word choices of basic words makes it much worse for me.
Overall, a good read with a solid plot, fleshed out characters, a strong world, and a fast pace. I would absolutely go on to read more books by this author. Just please spend more time on editing and less of trying to shove as many big words in as you can.

too many errors overwhelmed the susbtance
By Sophie Dixon
I would love to give this a higher rating but it was not sufficiently enthralling to overcome the numerous grammatical and spelling errors. I have taken into consideration that British / NZ spellings may be different, but really, a "heard" of sheep? First of all, sheep group in flocks. not herds, both nouns, and certainly not a variation of the verb "heard."
Judgment and judgmental are misspelled throughout.
"You should know, that even the mighty . . . " The comma makes the sentence incomprehensible.
"No one spoke a murmured sound throughout the room." What does that even mean?
"no way I'd except" except, really? completely different meaning from "accept" which is the word that should have been used in this sentence.
This author has potential and should be encouraged, esp as a kiwi, the best people and culture. Ms. Claire deserves a better editor.
I just gave up, completely deterred form ploughing through any more errors. These matter.

Loved this thrilling start of a sure to be amazing series!
By Charm (Once Upon a Book Blog)
Here at OUaBB we don't get enough opportunities to read New Zealand authors. I have a few on my TBR, but I have to admit it's been a while... So how excited was I when I got the opportunity to read this book! It's the first in a series and while is definitely still in my range of genre loves, is almost a little on the outer edges. So… I thought I'd take a risk and read something different. The risk DEFINITELY paid off, Nicola Claire can count on herself having a new fan!

Selena on the surface has everything anyone could ever want, money, status and connections. A life that could be led in luxurious ignorance, a life that many would call her crazy for questioning. But there's something that just will not let her accept the status quo. Something that has her out there risking more than she realizes for reasons that not even she understands quite yet. We're catapulted into this CRAZY dystopian world with Selena taking her defiance to a whole new level, straight away it's suspense building, heart stopping action. We aren't given the whole story, we don't exactly know what this world is or who Selena is... All of this information slowly begins to unravel after the event that threw us so completely into this story. It's this technique, the fast paced action mixed perfectly with the storytelling, which really had me enthralled.

The repetitive question 'Have you been a model citizen today' gives you a pretty good idea of what world you've stepped into. Controlling society is everything. Humans are sheep. Everybody lives by the rules, everybody is ruled by fear. In this world computers will keep you in line, artificial intelligence will make sure you are doing what you're supposed to be doing, where you're supposed to be, with who you're supposed to be doing it with. This is not a world with impulse, freedom or choice. The whole idea of it is such a complete mindf***!

So while the world is robotic and controlled, the main characters in this story are anything but. Selena and Trent are both fiery emotive characters. I absolutely LOVED Trent. Getting into his mind and watching the story unravel in his eyes as well as Selina's was exactly what the story needed. He had a serious amount of heart, which I love to see in any leading man situation, but especially in leading men like him, seemingly gruff and lives for the cause. The storyline between Trent and Selina really did hold so much of the charm of this book for me. I'm always a sucker for a killer human aspect and these two had the chemistry that nailed it.

This book gives you everything yet leaves you wanting so much more. Every time you feel like something has been resolved you realize there is still so much more to come. I loved that it's set up this very detailed world and this storyline for the series and it has a firm direction. I LOVED that there was obviously a cliff-hanger element but I didn't feel like throwing my kindle at the wall in impatient frustration. I love that I've found a new series obsession, something a little out of my norm that I can’t wait to follow on into book 2 & 3. If you're looking for a book to mix up your usual reading list then I seriously recommend this to you. I'm positive you'll be like me and won’t be able to put it down!
