About the Author
Jean E. Dvorak is a retired high school teacher. An avid horsewoman, she has competed and trained two horses to FEI level in dressage. No longer competing, she still trains her horses and those experiences are evident in the novels where horses play a significant role. From the author: "Fantasy writing is very liberating. It allows the writer complete control of the world. Where else can magic exist and anything at all can happen? The writer makes the rules and can take the story anywhere imagination allows." "The Magiskeep Saga" was "born" in 1984 as a response to a challenge from her students when she assigned them a writing assignment: "What would you do if you had a magic power?" Since then, encouragement from a group of gaming fantasy fans on "The Halfwittenberg Door" message board sparked more writing. The result is a total of four full novels and several shorter novelettes in the collection. Ms. Dvorak has also written a number of stage musicals, plays, and vocal musical pieces, all of which have been performed locally in New Jersey, where she lives.

filled with groping, lusting, incest, raping, and adultery...

If you are looking for a book where the main character is groped by a classmate in front of his class, and where incest, raping, lusting, and sexual innuendo abound-- then this just might be the book you're looking for. It's a shame the author had to incorporate all of that (and in such abundance) into the story...

Oh, what an editor could have done with this...

Warning: Minor Spoilers [*spoilers in brackets for easy avoidance*]
Kingdom Beyond the Rim is a familiar tale: a young orphaned boy discovers a gift that, if nurtured, may lead to him changing the world (hopefully for the better). In this case, naturally, it's magic. Jamus, the protagonist, has an uncanny knack for commanding magic, and as often as not ends up teaching his teachers a thing or two. The question is whether he can survive the jealousy and abuse of those around him, and at the same time avoid succumbing to the temptations to become an abuser himself.
PROS:
- The world is well-realized for those portions we see of it. The kingdoms are fleshed out as much as necessary, with flashbacks and brief history discussions giving plausible reasoning for the way everything is laid out as it is. There isn't too much unnecessary background on the kingdoms and the nobles; you get just enough to know who's who and what side of the Rim they're on.
- Magic is well formulated, being hashed out into schools or "Arts," with each complementing the others to form the whole. The system built around each Art depending on the previous one is well thought-out, and forms a good basis for how things should work. And, best of all, it's not all that difficult to follow.
- There's some fascinating alternate realities and side-facets of magic in the way of mirrors and how reflections alter magic, though it can get a little complicated at times.
- The series has potential, if the plot-lines get away from some of the cons listed below.
CONS:
- It's in need of proofreading and editing. It's apparent that some formatting got a little mixed up when uploading it into KDP, but there are many instances of missing punctuation, random punctuation, wrong or multiple names, wrong or multiple words, and confusing usage of vernacular or deliberate misspellings.
- The book is teeming with sex and sexual references, most notably rape. While there's nothing graphic, it doesn't really matter because there are so many instances of it that it gets tiresome the further you read. In several cases, rape seems to be the weapon of choice of the antagonists, which led to a lot of head-shaking on my part. It also seems that in a lot of cases, when a man meets a woman for the first time, the first thing he thinks is how much he'd like to bed her. Sure, there are people like that in reality, but in the book, it seems the rule rather than the exception. Further, many of the relationships in the book are built upon or simply focus on sex, with nothing showing that there's much else in the way of love between the partners. People with any sort of decency in either physicality or speech seem few and far between, even among those closest to the main character; some of his closest friends (who are his elders by quite some years, btw) seem to have no inhibitions when it comes to bragging about their sex life to him (when he's 15, no less). I found another scene where a bunch of "noble" men were singing a rather explicit song about sex in front of a high-ranking and important female adviser to be puzzling and out of place. Finally, the connection between characters and horses playing out when said horses have sex or rape at the same time the characters do was...disturbing, honestly.
- I felt there was too much telling, and not enough showing. It wasn't convincing for me to read a chorus of characters thinking or declaring over and over that the main character is pure and noble and good. That's honestly for the reader to decide, and when the main character isn't displaying that in a way the reader agrees with, having other characters declare it can come across as forced or even annoying. In my opinion, Jamus is a decent fellow (I'd hate to kill him), but calling him pure and noble honestly seemed a stretch. There were things he did that I found atrocious, and instances where his behavior suggested he still had a lot of maturing to do, and that how (or even if) that maturing took place would determine whether he actually ended up noble.
- Too many of the characters are not very likeable. Granted, some of them are supposed to be garbage, but they become caricatures in most cases because their words and actions are taken to such an extreme. Beyond the antagonists, even a few of the main character's friends and allies come across as petty, argumentative, or else simply victims-in-waiting that only he can save. The characters you want to empathize with and like end up giving you good reason not to in several cases. In one case, you have an antagonist become an ally to Jamus, but I still found her untrustworthy and easily considered evil; you don't become a "good guy" by doing the right thing only to be self-serving, in my opinion.
- For me, there's a consistency issue in the use of magic. People can use magic to dress themselves, conjure food, alter how they look, heal injuries, protect themselves from the weather, etc., but you have all these laborers making shoes, taking care of horses, washing the floors with a mop, and doing other menial labor that could apparently be done with a wave of someone's hand. It's explained as a "sense of accomplishment" thing, which does work in some cases, but from a purely logical standpoint, I found it hard to believe that people who can do virtually anything with their magic would develop such a strong work ethic.
- Animals seem to be treated as more important than people. This is a major pet peeve of mine, so it stood out more to me than it probably does for others. I find it disturbing when people declare how there is no way they'd ever harm a dog or a horse, but then they have little issue with setting people on fire, torturing them, killing them, or what-have-you. To me it points to questionable priorities, especially for those seeking to change society for the better, and it makes absolutely zero sense in the case of the villain(s). [*That the villain is willing to kill or rape people but unwilling to harm his horse when it attacks him repeatedly is confusing, at best. And it's perplexing that the one person in the whole kingdom besides Jamus who's willing to stand up to the main villain is a boy who's mad that the villain mistreated a horse. Decades of rape were okay, but mistreat a horse and now we have a problem?*]
- The story does drag in some places, particularly where there are extraneous scenes that seem to serve little purpose other than to solidify one of the antagonists as a jerk, or else to let the reader know that a couple of (sometimes minor) characters are going to get it on. [*When one gets to the climax, the main character goes and takes a nap in the middle of it. That seemed extremely silly to me, and only served to put a damper on what could have been an exciting chase scene leading up to the final confrontation.*]
- It breaks the fourth wall a few times. Some folks don't mind this, but it drives me batty reading a book. Part of the fun of a story like this is "growing up with" the main character, seeing through his eyes and learning the way magic and the world work along with him. Unfortunately for me, this book is written from an omniscient point of view that breaks the fourth wall at times (meaning the "narrator" speaks directly to you to let you in on plot points). If told from the main character's point of view specifically, I think a lot of what the villain(s) do would have been more of a shock, much more offensive and terrifying, and the reader wouldn't have such a clear view of what's coming.
All in all, despite the issues I had with the book, it kept me turning pages to see how things turned out. For me, the "worst" of it is the sexuality of the story, which is a "your mileage may vary" issue - it may be to your liking, or it may make you not like the book. I feel it's important to at least warn potential readers that if they find abundant sexual references and rape to be something they want to avoid, then this may not be the right story for them. Overall, there's a good story underneath the things I didn't care for, so please take them as a critique, and not a flame.

A good introduction to a solid series

As the bard once wrote, some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them. The Saga of Magiskeep is a long-ranged story telling the tale of Jamus, an overly-talented and initially-unsure figure who definitely qualifies as the latter. During this first part of the saga, the reader witnesses his struggles to overcome the challenges of his early years when his inherent magical abilities far outstrip his ability to control them - and, as he matures, far more dangerous challenges from those who seek to dominate or destroy him out of fear, desire, or jealousy.
The author does a fine job of creating a fully-realized world in the setting of Turan. I particularly enjoyed the description of the titular "Rim" mountain range - and the reason this illusion-drenched range exists, which is not spelled out in infodump fashion but rather woven cleverly into references to the setting's backstory. Even more intriguing is the development of the way magic works in the world - the division of the seven Arts and the different techniques needed to manipulate them are well-defined and make sense in context. And as the author is an avid equestrian, it is not surprising that a good deal of attention is focused on horses and horsemanship, lending a nice sense of verisimilitude to the story - but the focus on this is not so overwhelming that it becomes annoying.
However, as has been pointed out in previous reviews, there is a more-than-healthy dose of sexual content including rape. Even though it is not graphically described, this is definitely not appropriate material for younger readers. The one issue I have with such content is the fact that it happens so frequently in this tale that the reader quickly becomes inured to the "shock" effect, so much so that the final such incident - which, given the circumstances, should be utterly horrifying - becomes a "yeah, saw that one a mile away" moment.
Overall, this is a very good introduction to the series and definitely worth a look.
