Since the Deathclock on Painting Has Been Reset...

The return of art that seeks to break down locked retinal walls and loose mere anarchy upon unsuspecting minds... is a good thing. Talented, intelligent young people are staring at blank canvases and making dangerous plans. They know their art history. They know the schools, the theories, the critical philosophies. But the divide between high and low culture has been bridged in the post-modern world; after speaking eloquently and passionately about 'Las Meninas' or De Kooning's 'Excavation', they might open another chamber of their heart, and wax philosophic about Charles Burns, or Michael Deforge, or 'Little Nemo in Slumberland'... for example.

Critical predictions about the future of an artistic medium can be accurate only as self-fulfilling prophecies. Duchamp painted his masterpiece, declared painting dead, and people took him seriously. Talk about gullible. Never trust DadaDuchamp, Chump. Then came Greenberg, with near-agendas and almost-timelines, counting down the days as painters ejected everything from the canvas that attempted to transcend the canvas, and gave up their paints and brushes. And there were many talented people who got with the joyless modern art program, painting squares (but never cubes!), painting circles (but never spheres!), and never telling lies on canvas. Waiting out the clock till doomsday.

Fortunately, we don't have to accept artistic dogma about inevitabilities. Painters can tell wonderful lies in a variety of colors, and 'tricks of the eye' can make us think we're looking through a window, or into a mirror, or through a telescope, microscope, periscope, kaleidoscope, stethoscope (the last one might be a challenge)...

The artists in this volume published by good ol' 'Thames and Hudson' will likely be new to you, as most were to me. A lot of really talented painters submitted work for consideration, I know a couple of them. But deciding on the final cut of 100 must have been tough, because the artists who made it are very impressive. I don't hold all the contributors in as high esteem as the editors clearly do, but I must concede their talent and ability on most of them. Some of the work seemed uninspired or derivative to me, but it's art. Opinions will vary. Ordered alphabetically, I felt it augured well that one of the first artists featured, Dale Adcock, immediately made a fan out of me. I will be searching out his work, very soon, and I will attempt to buy it. I've given up all hope of ever owning a work by Vincent Desiderio or Ken Currie, but I might be able to afford a Dale Adcock... as long as I don't wait too long. You probably won't like every artist in '100 Painters of Tomorrow', but that's a testament to the variety included between covers. It's a nicely made volume, up to T&H standards, 9.5" x 12.75", with thick, semi-gloss, 'arctic white' stock. It's not a standard hardcover, however, done in the 'turtleback' format instead -- thick board spine and covers, but the edges are cut flush with the leaves, and left exposed; it's basically a heavy-duty softcover. For anyone who's still excited by paintings, this is highly recommended.

Interesting selection of "emerging" painters, with good reproductions. However, the type face for the headings, including the names of the artists, is difficult to read, and the text is small and faint, so that you must strain to get the meaning.

PREFACE

The Commander, United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) directed that all Special Operational Forces (SOF) Medics be trained to a single, interoperable standard. He directed that the USSOCOM’s Advanced Tactical Practitioner’s (ATP) Critical Task List (CTL) be implemented into all SOF enlisted medical training as a minimum standard.

Upon completion of SOF medical training, all SOF students are required to sit and successfully pass the USSOCOM Advanced Tactical Practitioner’s Certification Examination as official recognition and proof of the student’s knowledge of the CTL medical requirements.
This study guide reflects the hybrid nature of the USSOCOM certification examination. Where applicable, SOF medical requirements and standards have been merged with the DOT based curriculum. The DOT/Civilian standards of care are always applicable to the military but there may be times when it is difficult to achieve. Many questions on the examination will be appropriate in either setting. Where so, there has been an attempt both on the examination and in this study guide, to differentiate the standard of care in the pertinent setting.

The ATP student will find that like the Department of Transportation’s Curriculum and the National Registry’s Certification program and any other “Medical Certification” process; most of the material covered within the pages of this study guide will be covered during the student’s formal phase of instruction. However, some of it may not. The student must recognize that not all subject material can be taught in a formal setting. It is the ATP student’s responsibility to use this study guide to complement their formal instruction in preparation to successfully pass the USSOCOM ATP Certification Examination.

Takes a bit to get into

This collection at first was hard to get into, a dragon society based on a human kingdom didn't appeal to me, but it did grow on me after I read a chapter or two. It's a quirky read, epic fantasy and little sci-fi added in but all in all I finished it within three days or so and it ended well.

A can't miss, MUST READ!!!

Great writing, amazing characters, and a gripping story that touches on several different genres that just about anybody would enjoy. In depth character and descriptive writing put you in the characters head as well as in the moment and give you vivid visualizations and understaning that make the character stories easy to follow as well as a grand understanding of this world of dragons and man, love and war, and trust and betrayal. I would and HAVE suggested this book as a tool to MANY people that mainly stick to their one or two certain types of genre to broaden their horizons because this book has it all.

Action, Humor, and star crossed lovers (literally)

Maxey delivers more over-the-top action, however the protagonists start off as indestructible and become more vulnerable as they move through the book. He retains his flair for raising the stakes at each encounter until the world is saved multiple times by the end of the trilogy. His humor is similar to Piers Anthony's, only better. Themes of sacrifice for love, family, and friends are woven throughout the books. As for the star crossed lovers - I won't spoil the major plot element - but star crossed is not hyperbole.

I don't know what it was about Mike and Clarke's story that spoke to me on such an emotional and deeper level than the other stories, but I can tell you it did. I can tell you it did, because I cried. I cried for Mike, I cried for Paul and I cried for Clarke. This book was the same kind of feel as the other books, but yet different in a way. Deepest Blues was so much more about Mike and battling addiction, recovering, loss, guilt and cause/effect. Is it weird to be proud of a character? I found myself while reading this book being proud of Mike and how far he has come. And also kind of proud of the rest of the band for the support system they gave him, never walking away, never leaving him behind. I also found myself proud of MIke, yet disappointed at the same time when it came to Ilsa. Hence the crying. That moment in time, that one time, Sway witnessed it, I read it, I cried. My stomach dropped. It's SO real. It's so something that is a situation anyone can find themselves in, and most of us probably have. It's one of those times in life where you are reading a book, the scene pulls the feels from you and jogs a memory. You relate to the character. You remember those feelings. That's what Heidi did to me throughout this book. It's so much more than the band, and the music, and love. It is about growth and support, and recovery, and STRENGTH. You can't read this book and not see how strong Mike is for the path he chose, granted it took something horrible to get him on this path, but he's there. And he sticks to it. It takes a strong person to realize their faults or addictions, take the necessary steps to fix it, and stay on the up and up. But the same goes for Clarke. Two strong people, suffering a loss, battling internal issues, but taking the right steps to make themselves better before they can ever be better together. Such a beautiful thing. And the way Heidi delivers this story, you can't help but fall in love with Clarke, Mike and Sway too.

Deepest Blues stands out to me in this series to me because it's so different. It's on a different level than the other books in the series. It's the same amazing writing style that Heidi always deliver, and that I am always addicted to, that's no surprise. But this one is just so much deeper. I think you did amazing with this. 5 stars Heidi, 5 stars, no doubt in my mind.

Love the series

Finally! We get Mike’s story! I’ve been waiting for this forever! Okay, while maybe a few months? But still, it’s been a while.

I loved the look at addiction we get through Mike’s perspective. I’ve never really thought extensively on addiction but when I have I’ve never seen it in that way. It was interesting and eye opening. I enjoyed this new outlook. It really opened my eyes.

Like the previous books in the Double Blind Study, we get to view scenes that we’ve already seen in previous books. Now this does not mean they’re repetitive or boring. These scenes are told from another person’s perspective and adds another viewpoint to see this moment and how it affected the characters. I loved that! It gave an entirely new view of Shane and Greta’s first meeting as just one example.

Then the struggles that both characters faced are huge. I really did not think that they would be able to bounce back and work through that. But again, I was proven wrong. Even though Clarke had good reason to hate Mike she honestly worked through her feelings and bounced back better than I thought she could. And Mike while struggling doesn’t go back to what he knows. It was wonderful to not necessarily see them struggle but to come through those struggles better for it. It gives hope that things can get so much better during difficult periods.

I also have to admit that as usual I loved the other characters, although Lia was a particular favorite. I just enjoyed her no nonsense attitude and her ability to stand up for herself.

It was great to see everyone get their happy endings and I’m looking forward to seeing Harrison get his. Whoever he ends up with is really lucky as he seems such a sweetheart.

Heartbreaking yet so beautiful!!

I could not wait to read this book. I completely fell in love with Mike from Book One. There was just something about him that drew me to him. He was the quiet one. He was the one always watching everything and everyone around him. He was always there when his band brothers needed him and giving his words of wisdom and support.

Mike holds my heart. His story was heartbreaking and beautiful. I love the determination he had to win his battle and make himself whole. Mike and Clarke were just destined to be together.

I love how Heidi writes and creates her characters. No weak females here. Clarke battles with her own issues. She has no family but she’s still strong, intelligent and fierce. All the characters are well developed and they grow on you. You will laugh, snort, cry and giggle. And be prepared to feel all the warm fuzzies because Mike is just that loveable.

I love Heidi’s writing style. She always delivers a true love story. Her stories are always told with such passion and enough drama to keep you consumed from beginning to end. There touching, heartbreaking, relatable and always carry such a great positive message. Mike’s story gives you hope. That although life can sometimes be tough and there are obstacles that require great strength to overcome, however, if you are determined and believe in faith and hope, you can overcome just about anything.

Although each book in this series can be read as a standalone, I would recommend reading in order. You get to meet the characters from the beginning and get a feel for each one. Each story is just as wonderful and they just continue to get better and better.

Almost better than a hug...just when you need it most.

As an RN I see families trying to deal with the sudden crisis of caring for an elder loved one just when emotions are the highest. I would not hesitate to recommend this insightful, compassionate and easy to follow guide book to anyone in need. It offers

Good resource for Care for Elders!

I took care of my mother and grandmother until they died. Having the information in this book would have made my decisions easier to make. The stress and strain of dealing with loved ones as they are aging and dying is tremendous and one that just seemed to pop up one day for me to deal with. I was not prepared for what I had to deal with. It's comforting to know there are resources, like this book, available.

On the one hand I love M J Scott. I like this storyline or liked it better in the first book. The flip side is Ash has to be the dumbest and most infuriating 'heroine' ever. If I could I would shake some damn sense into her.

Stupid move after stupid move. And I think that this gulf between her and Dan is ridiculous and slightly unbelievable but what do I now. You fought to finally see common sense but can't articulate what you need or fight to make things work.

I'm torn now between wanting to know more and not wanting to read abt her dumb shenanigans that get more peeps hurt because she fails to be completely honest. And if she ends up w Marco I'll be hella pissed. What made the first book great was the love you could feel underlying and now it's gone. Whomp.

Likewise a Malrauxian relationship is noted between the cross-legged Maitreya images of Chinese Buddhism and Romanesque sculptures of southwestern France in exactly the same attitude. And the Sumerian ram of hammered gold and lapis-lazuli from Queen Shad-Ad’s tomb ‘could quite conceivably have been made by Fabergé.’

Robert Payne (1911-1983) was born in Cornwall, U.K. His father was English, his mother French. He was educated at St. Paul's School in London and at the universities of Liverpool, Capetown in South Africa, Munich and The Sorbonne. During his lifetime he had over a hundred books published on a wide range of subjects, the widest range of any known author. He was known chiefly for his biographies and history books, among them Hitler, Lenin, Stalin, Gandhi, Leonardo, Chaplin, the Christian Centuries, The World of Art. He also wrote novels and poetry. Librarians loved him; critics raved about him. Orville Prescott of The New York Times referred to him as “a literary phenomenon of astounding versatility and industry.”

Another timeless creation of the Genius, Robert Payne

To compose a review without at least producing a cursory glance at the magnificent career of Stephen Pierre Robert Payne would be to impose an unprecedented discourtesy to one of the greatest authors and geniuses of the 20th century.

Born in 1911, Payne pursued a number of careers throughout his life including that of a professor of English poetry and a lecturer in naval architecture (1943-46); head of the English department at Alabama College, Montevallo (1949-54); war correspondent in Spain (1938); correspondent for the Times of London in Changsha, China (1942); in addition having been the founding director of Columbia University Translation Center.

Despite having pursued such a varied number of occupational positions, Payne is best known for the remarkable body of literature he produced spanning in date of creation from 1940 to 1980, which consisted of nearly 200 brilliantly executed texts.

"The world of art" is no exception to the rule of Payne's stellar quality that he exuded though his literary compilations. Belles-lettres could only begin to describe the magical quality that acts an overtone to this composition, allowing the reader to drift through nearly 4000 years of Fine Art history as though it took place within a decade of time.

Although, this text should be regarded as a general summary of art history, still it contains much information that a reader of any level shall not have been exposed to previously.

In sum, "The World of Art" is an easy, enjoyable, and truly enlightening read; a product of an author who is able to relate first hand, and perform intellectually astute and accurate assessments of the existence of most of the greatest artistic achievements in world history that were still visible in 20th century.

Highly recommended indeed.
