Very few books try to capture a subject as vast as the world of art, and even fewer succeed. But Robert Payne has succeeded, and in this book he por¬trays, in vivid, fresh, nontechnical language, the entire history and achievement of the world’s artists¬ from the original cave-man painters who decorated their homes with ani¬mal paintings to contemporary artists, who fill their canvases with often be¬wildering abstract forms. Payne ap¬proaches each artistic period and each great artist with sympathetic under¬standing and an appreciation of the values and aesthetic ideals of the time. Through carefully chosen illustrations woven into his text, moreover, he shows exactly what makes a work of art great.
WORLD OF ART casts its view over all the types of art: not only the Western tradition, but the contributions of Egypt, Persia, India, China, Japan, and other important cultures as well. Yet the book is more than a mere survey, for Robert Payne's special bril¬liance lies in showing the common spirit and aspiration that have united all the world's great artists.
“The main value of this book is spontaneity. There is nothing pedantic about it. Although it ranges all over the world art from its earliest beginnings to the present, the author keeps the flow of his account moving at a rapid pace. Its importance is to offer a fast-paced critical reassessment of the history of art in terms of today’s outlook. Mr. Payne relies chiefly on a beautiful use of language, which enables him to telescope the essence of a culture or period into a few well-turned paragraphs. He gives the reader a dynamic reevaluation based on critical judgments and first-hand observations rather than a rehash of conventional academic views. Nor does the author hesitate to slice across centuries and civilizations to find illuminating parallels. The Sung painter Kuo Hsi’s fondness for observing the movement of water is equated with Leonardo’s; Brueghel the Elder’s ‘feeling for the raw coldness of snow’ will later be shared by Hiroshige. Likewise a Malrauxian relationship is noted between the cross-legged Maitreya images of Chinese Buddhism and Romanesque sculptures of southwestern France in exactly the same attitude. And the Sumerian ram of hammered gold and lapis-lazuli from Queen Shad-Ad’s tomb ‘could quite conceivably have been made by Fabergé.’
“Rather than the pedantic accuracy of an encyclopedia approach, Mr. Payne’s book possesses the rare quality of persuasiveness and enthusiasm, and it will send the reader off to go and look.” —Henry A. La Farge, Senior Editor, Art News

Another timeless creation of the Genius, Robert Payne
By Eric I. Spoutz
To compose a review without at least producing a cursory glance at the magnificent career of Stephen Pierre Robert Payne would be to impose an unprecedented discourtesy to one of the greatest authors and geniuses of the 20th century.
Born in 1911, Payne pursued a number of careers throughout his life including that of a professor of English poetry and a lecturer in naval architecture (1943-46); head of the English department at Alabama College, Montevallo (1949-54); war correspondent in Spain (1938); correspondent for the Times of London in Changsha, China (1942); in addition having been the founding director of Columbia University Translation Center.
Despite having pursued such a varied number of occupational positions, Payne is best known for the remarkable body of literature he produced spanning in date of creation from 1940 to 1980, which consisted of nearly 200 brilliantly executed texts.
"The world of art" is no exception to the rule of Payne's stellar quality that he exuded though his literary compilations. Belles-lettres could only begin to describe the magical quality that acts an overtone to this composition, allowing the reader to drift through nearly 4000 years of Fine Art history as though it took place within a decade of time.
Although, this text should be regarded as a general summary of art history, still it contains much information that a reader of any level shall not have been exposed to previously.
In sum, "The World of Art" is an easy, enjoyable, and truly enlightening read; a product of an author who is able to relate first hand, and perform intellectually astute and accurate assessments of the existence of most of the greatest artistic achievements in world history that were still visible in 20th century.
Highly recommended indeed.
