Up Late and Worth It - Unreal City Is A Win On Several Stages - A

Let me start out with some unflattering truths: I am a slow reader and it is hard to capture my attention in text format. With that said, I finished this book in four nights! I couldn’t put it down. A chapter would end and I’d just keep going. I yearned for more! I was tired as a dog the next morning for work because I was up too late reading Unreal City. No book has done that since I read Fahrenheit 451 in high school, some ten years ago.
In one sentence that really doesn’t do the book justice, Unreal City feels like a clever, refreshing reinvention of what we’d call fairy tales. No spoilers but here’s a heads-up – you thought the Cheshire Cat was cool? Then brace yourself for Felix, who embodies the masterwork of A.R. Meyering.
And that really sums up what I like most about this book. The characters not only were enjoyable and relatable, but they worked towards the plot. None of them were just there as filler or misused. It felt orchestrated as things came together, and, at points, things fell apart for our heroes.
In the end, Unreal City will leave you with emotions. You’ll be angry, you’ll be sad, you’ll be happy, you’ll be all things in between. And they’ll stick with you. I haven’t been able to get those feelings out of my heart since.
Here’s hoping for a sequel!

A horror/fantasy novel that will stick with you for ages

This book messed me up in the best possible way. The dark, tragic grieving of Sarah over her sister broke my heart. Her relationship with her creepy familiar, Felix, kept me unsettled and on edge even as I slowly began to understand and even sympathize with him. And the twisted, disturbing insanity as Sarah fell deeper between the worlds of fantasy and reality affected me in a way I don't think I'll ever be able to shake off. I ADORE this book. It's terrifying and beautiful, tragic but hopeful, and gritty yet magical all at the same time. If you're a fan of either horror or fantasy, you need to read this book NOW.

I saw this book listed on the giveaways section of this site, and I read the synopsis and thought that it sounded like it could be good, but that type of book hadn't really been something that I would normally have read. I purchased the e-book for a low price, and I didn't expect much, to be honest.
Wow, was I wrong.
This book...this book is amazing. The characters are detailed, the environments are so enchanting it makes you feel like you are truly a part of the story. To me, it had a dark, dark Alice in Wonderland feel to it, and I wanted to read this book constantly.
I just finished it, and I want to start it again already.
This book is so beautifully written, with likeable characters (especially Sarah's familiar, I had such a love for him!), beautiful, enchanting environments, and am engrossing story that made me not want to put it down.
I'll definitely be reading more titles from this author!
