Vegas Cop, by Kim Thomas

Cam Madden had a good job and a carefree bachelor lifestyle when he impulsively tried out for the police academy of the Las Vegas Metro Police Department. Now that he’s mastered the theories of law enforcement in the Academy, his education in its realities begins with field training and an ugly suicide call.
Learning the lessons of the street leaves scars on Cam’s ego and more on his body, but it’s even rougher on his off-duty relationships with women. It doesn’t matter until he falls for Karrie Mae, a paramedic, whereupon making it work becomes all-important.
Their romance grows in a world of burglars, bums, purse snatchers, drug dealers, and homicidal idiots, no two of them alike but each to be dealt with according to endless regulations, some of which cannot work without being severely bent.
Vegas Cop is in a sense every cop’s journey, the story of finding his own place in a company of heroes, even if that company contains a disturbing proportion of bureaucrats, office politicians, and layabouts. Somehow the finest and the flawed manage to work together well enough to keep the barbarians at bay.
Every day.

From the Author
This was my first published book. It started as a collection of short stories that was intended to be my MFA thesis. My advisor, Doug Unger, didn't like the short story format and rightly so. He encouraged me to do a rewrite and produce a novel. The stories separated into a chronological order and soon showed themselves to be a coming-of-age tale for the protagonist. The reader sees Cam going through the process of changing from a civilian to a cop. The thesis title is It's a Tough One Out There. Former Stephen's Press publisher, Carolyn Hayes Uber, talked to me about changing the title to Vegas, One Cop's Journey. We did. I decided for an ebook release, the new title would be Vegas Cop.

From the Back Cover
". . . things were doing what they always did, which was getting themselves straightened out," says the narrator about the opening scene of carnage in Kim Thomas's novel, Vegas Cop.  In a sense, that's what Thomas's book does about the life of a modern day Sin City cop.  When you finish reading it, you will know how things get themselves "straightened out" inside the sub-station, the black-and-white, the uniform, and the mind and heart of a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Officer in our time. A good story, well-told.
John H. Irsfeld, author of Rats Alley and Little Kingdoms

Kim Thomas has written the ultimate insider's novel about police work and the human toll it exacts from the good souls who devote themselves to its demanding journey.   This fine first novel has a plain-speaking immediacy that never holds back. Vegas Cop bears stark witness to hard truths on the streets but also to moments of compassion that combine to portray our contemporary reality in a rewarding reading experience.
Douglas Unger, author of Looking for War and Voices from Silence
"It doesn't get much grittier than being a street cop in Las Vegas and real-life Metro detective Kim Thomas doesn't let the glitz of America's favorite playground of the wanna-be rich and sometimes-famous conceal the grime in this rite of passage."
Jack Sheehan, author of Skin City: Uncovering the Las Vegas Sex Industry

Kim Thomas has proven himself to be a fine detective and his writing is filled with a gritty, street level perspective of the daily business of putting your life on the line for your community. Kim captures the ever-changing and fast-paced nature of emotions and event that fill a street cop's everyday work.            .
Jerry Keller, former Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Sherriff
and Director of Security Wynn Las Vegas

As a former Vegas cop, I wanted to hear Kim's perspective on his time with LVMPD. This is great reading for even the lay person on the inner goings in the mind of an officer working the streets and as a detective in the bureau. His experiences covered the gamut of different shift work, different sector beats and the honest truth of cops sometimes lose a suspect during a chase or as in this scenario, losing a suspect in a 401 (auto accident). Kudos to Kim.

Was expecting more action......
By Patrick A
Agree with some of the other reviews, this is a tough read. Goes into a lot of detail and sidetracks that I didn't see as relevant. I did not finish it - which rarely happens with me and a book. I think I expected more action and excitement from a book titled Vegas Cop. It might be a better read for those in law enforcement.

This is the author's first book, but you can already feel the edgy, realistic, life of a Vegas cop. A must read for anyone who has been to Vegas, a great read for all! I really enjoyed this book, the adventures of Cam have stayed with me.
