An enchanting adventure into the past.

The book begins mysteriously with magic and a little enchantment to hook the reader. It then proceeds, told from different character's points of view, telling the tale of the history of the Mackinac, woven with the lives of voyageurs, fur company magnates, society ladies and Native Americans. As the ship glides across Lake Huron, the characters secrets are exposed and collide with the mysteries of the other passengers aboard the Starlight.
A fun, sweeping read that was romantic, exciting and filled with adventure. I loved the way the author used words to paint vivid scenes within the book, scenes of the Mackinac Island I know personally and recognized instantly through her words.
For romance and magic, this book did not disappoint. Much in the spirit of Susanna Kearsley, Alice Hoffman or maybe Victorian era authors. I don't often find an author that evokes a feeling or a relationship for feelingly.

Alex weaves believable characters: not all-good heroes or all-bad villains. Each character is complex and fun to get to know. I've never been anywhere near mackinac island (nor had I even heard of it) but now I feel like I've visited, and it was a lovely journey!

a tale for the midwest

Coming from an expat Midwestern girl this book resonated memories of my time on Lake Michigan, living in Wisconsin. Innovative idea to write a book of sea adventures not from the Caribbean or Atlantic, something for us "landlocked" folk. The Great Lakes are a wild world of their own and this book is testament to that. Nolan's flowing writing style serves the reader the ability to crack open this book at the end of a long day, curled up in bed, and not fall asleep two seconds later. It was a treat reading about far away places that really aren't that far away. I loved this book, it really says something when you want to travel to the place of your latest read. yay for good books!
