Thomas P. Warren is a financial management expert currently working and living in Washington, D.C. Previously Mr. Warren was employed by a major wealth management firm in the New York Metro area as a Certified Financial Planner(c). Mr. Warren's early career was with Merrill Lynch and Co. in New York City where he held several managerial positions in finance and information technology. Mr. Warren also worked as a consultant on information technology to companies and organizations in the financial services industry. In 2008 he founded Y Squared Advisors, LLC to provide unique, specialized services to individuals and small businesses. Mr. Warren has published several online articles on the subject of personal financial management. Born Bankrupt is his first book. Mr. Warren earned an MBA in International Finance from New York University and an undergraduate degree in business administration from the State University of New York. Mr. Warren enjoys reading, boating, skiing, and winning at cards and investing. He gardens and makes mean barbecue in his Vienna, Virginia backyard. He has two children - Laura and Gregory - who reside in the New York City metro area.

A Satisfying Preview to the Chadash Chronicles

This has recently been revised and reformatted with added content, including a new cover. One of the main characters from the Chadash Chronicles is introduced as a young boy to strengthen the bridge between this preview and the Chronicles. This gives valuable insight into this characters involvement in the Chronicles. This preview of the Qarahni people is very effective being told by a Lorefather to an upcoming generation who need to hear about the history of their people.

Johnson portrays the Lorefather as one who loves children, loves his people and their heritage. This forms a great backbone to this short. In this revised edition, the Lorefather's character has been expanded and this makes him more relational and adds depth to the preview and history of the Qarahni people. Having read both the original edition and now this revision one, this one reads and flows better and is much more enjoyable. The change in writing format adds a greater depth to this preview.

Johnson has explained with passion what happened in their heritage that divided this unified race really well and I can see that this will aid the reader in understanding and appreciating the Chadash Chronicles.

There is also depth to this heritage and you can see that he has been influenced by other sources. Johnson likes attention to detail and structure in his plot and characters and I found this to be a great strength.

This revised short gives a very good introduction to the Chadesh Chronicles and is very effective as a short standalone story if it needed to be but, I am glad it is not!

The Everking's Mytho-Historical Tale Told Swiftly and Engagingly. Get past the framing narrative and you will be HOOKED.

4.5 stars. For fans of fables, hero tales, legends, and myths. An engrossing and fast-paced (once it gets going) novella to introduce readers to the world of Chadash, which is the setting of a trilogy by the author.

Okay, what we have here is a novella that is a framed story: a fantasy world's Grand Lorefather is teaching a class and retells the tale of their civilization's historical past. The main part of the novella is a mytho-historical account of a great past king who ends up leaving a legacy of a divided and damaged family and divided and damaged kingdom as a result of choosing unwisely how to acquire an heir. It's dense and --with minor bobbles in diction and syntax here and there, very few--it's a page-turner I was totally engrossed in the story of the Everking (the name ends up ironic) and how he finds the wrong solution in forbidden magic to a common problem of infertility. His children and kingdom pay the price (as does he in many ways).

This could easily have been a longer work, a novel, as it has enough characters and conflict in the Everking's tale. The author uses a voice that at first, in the opening pages, threatened to be overly "prose-y"--slightl purpley--but he reigns himself in as we go along and, by the time he tells the Everking's history (with few bobbles in diction, as I mentioned), we have a smoothly, richly, engagingly told legend with nobles, warriors, wraiths, shamans and shamanesses, curses, conflicts, and assorted creatures roaming with various goals and hungers.

This short work succeeds in its purpose: It makes me want to read on to find out more of this world and its peoples.

Note: After the tale is told, there is an afterword with a personal testimony by the author, who is a Christian.

If you loved "Six Gun Tarot"

If you loved "Six Gun Tarot", then you'll love "Shotgun Arcana".

To be clear, you really need to read "Six Gun Tarot" first. It introduces most of the characters and gives a little of their backgrounds and sets the stage for "Shotgun Arcana". I won't spoil the plot of either book except that it is set in the old Wild West, but isn't a Western.

Mr. Belcher is an amazing storyteller with characters that draw you in from the first page. While I loved "Six Gun Tarot", "Shotgun Arcana" is just total awesome from page one. I couldn't put it down and read it within 24 hours.

Great follow up, character development and new additions. Loving this series!

My Thoughts: These are listed as steampunk, but thus far there is limited steampunkery. To me, this is mostly a Weird Western with strong Lovecraftian influences. There are also very many stretches of interesting philosophical discussion between the various characters that I quite enjoyed. For instance:
“God simply is,” Bick said. “Humanity embraced It. They gave It color and gender, shape and form. They put words in Its mouth. They always have, and they still do, perhaps they always will. I always experience God as a 'He,' but God is too vast to be held prisoner by language or biology.”

“...What things do you think the Almighty was whispering in my ear all those countless eons? Words of endearment? Of joy and peace and love? No. He dipped his tongue in the blackest blood and he whispered to me of slaughter, of death, of torture and atrocity. That is your creator, Biqa. He built this entire lovely, lovely playground so that he could tear it apart, abuse and neglect his toys and listen to the terrified screams of the monkeys as they tried to understand.”

Where did payback end exactly? Charlie Upton had murdered Jim's Pa. Jim killed Charlie. One day Jim might get shot or hanged for what he did to Charlie and sometone like Mutt or Jon Highfather might seek revenge in his name. How far back did the blood flow? When was it enough? Could anything ever get square?

I'm enjoying the character development in these books. Mutt, for example, has really loosened up, and he's quite funny in this book. Jon is off a lot, leaving Mutt and Jim to take care of business in the town. Doc Tumblety is such a creeper, and of course incompetent to boot. As Jon Highfather states: “And that's our first-rate medical care here in sunny Golgotha. He may seem pretty horrible at first, but after awhile you come to realize that deep down inside, he's much worse than that.” He's very misogynistic, saying at one point to Kate, “Hush now... Men are talking.” As for Kate, she makes a great addition to the cast and to the town; I hope we'll see her again! I enjoyed the bits and pieces of Chinese history and legends that Ch'eng Huang provides to Jim as he is instructing him on how to use the jade eye. I was more than a bit troubled by the inclusion of the Thuggee, as their worship of Kali Ma is a perversion. It is true Kali Ma is the Mother-Destroyer, the one who must destroy the world so it can be remade anew, but that doesn't mean that people should be going around randomly murdering in her name.

Also, it is mentioned off-hand that Baba Yaga came to Golgotha, albeit briefly. She is not mentioned by name, but a house on chicken legs is a dead giveaway. I do hope that this story will be told in full; maybe the author has a number of these little anecdotes that he could use to put together an anthology of short stories set in Golgotha?

Toward the end, Clay and a Professor Zenith have a “science showdown” that is wonderfully fun as they shout at one another, using very civilized language and high-toned insults. It struck my funny bone and hopefully I won't be the only one amused by it. At the end, Clay says, “I swear... anyone with a little copper tubing and a dynamo thinks they're a scientist these days.”

This is an excellent follow-up and I'm grateful to the author for sending me this ARC so I didn't have to wait until October to read it! I haven't commented on editing because this is an uncorrected proof, so any errors I spotted will likely be cleaned up by the final draft. Definitely check this out if it sounds like the sort of book you'd like!

series is shaping up nicely

I'd never heard of R.S. Belcher but I saw the first volume in this series, "The Six-Gun Tarot" as a Kindle daily deal and went for it. Liked that book quite a lot -- enough to immediately buy "The Shotgun Arcana" at full price.

Stylistically, the books are fairly similar. Most of the characters are people we got to know in "Tarot," so you don't get a good deal of background information on them here. Both books have self-contained stories and plots that tied up pretty nicely, but I'd strongly recommend reading them in order to understand the characters and the town of Golgotha better. (So don't start with this book -- but the first one is definitely worth a read, anyway.)

There are quite a few POV characters and other townspeople who return for this book, though they may not get POV chapters. So you really don't get long stretches of text where you're following an individual strand of the plot. I hesitate to say anything jumps around, but new chapters often mean new POVs, so you might have to wait awhile to find out what happens to a character in danger. I think this is mostly done well and serves to build tension -- and the various plot threads do intersect later in the book.

I like the characters in this book. You can root for the townspeople, but you know that pretty much all of them (except maybe Constance Stapleton, who is probably too young to have many faults) have interesting/dark/checkered pasts. I wouldn't call them "gray characters" in the sense that's popular in fantasy today, because they're clearly the good guys. But they're not Mary Sues -- they're not perfect, they have flaws, they have internal conflicts. Golgotha seems to attract such people.

Clay, the unofficial town coroner and mad scientist type, deserves particular mention. He mostly appears in other characters' POV scenes. He's both brilliant and incredibly creepy and it's a good thing he's on the good guys' side. I love all the little references to his correspondence with well-known scientists of the time, and how he applies their findings to his own research. If not for Clay, this book would probably never have gotten the "steampunk" label, and I'm still not sure "steampunk" is accurate. This is pretty much standard fantasy but with guns and in a Western setting (fine by me, though). When events start to come to a head later in the book, I wondered where he was, but he shows up at a wonderful time to face off against the perfect adversary for him, and I think that scene is pretty fun.

There's some romance in this book, although it's largely frustrated (for various reasons) -- much more so than in the previous book. I think it serves to show a more human side of the main characters, to flesh them out a bit. And it's not typical, Hollywood-style romance. I think it works, and that there will be more of it in future volumes. We'll see.

As I mentioned earlier, the story is self-contained (including a mystery that gets resolved, with appropriate clues and red herrings), but I do like the little hints about things to come in the town, the unresolved questions and issues in the characters' lives, etc. I think there is a lot of potential for more material here. (For that matter, there are a lot of references to past events that the author hasn't written about. I could see a book of short stories or a few novellas expanding on those issues. I start to wonder why anyone would ever want to live in Golgotha but the people who are here either are (A) Mormons who were fleeing persecution, (B) people working in the silver mine and at associated trades, (C) Chinese immigrants who had no more work on the railroad, and (D) people fleeing from their pasts, so I guess I have my answer.)

I'm not as thrilled about the villains. There are quite a few of them in this book. And while the author was creative in giving them origin stories and methods of operation, they're all kind of over the top and one-dimensional, with the exception of their leader. The chapters in this book start with a few paragraphs to a page or two in italics, giving the backstories of some of the villains. It's hard to keep track of a lot of these people over the course of the book, so you don't necessarily remember who all of them are by the time they actually show up in the story. Nonetheless, the final confrontation has plenty of action and tension and things look pretty dire for our heroes at several points.

In the end, I'm definitely glad I picked up this book (and the previous volume) and I'm looking forward to more in this series!

Really Enjoyed

What better way to get ready for the holidays than some feel good romance stories? I really enjoyed this box set, especially Bobbi Lerman's Matchmaker-Matchmaker. The banter over the family dinner table had me rolling, the love story felt genuine, and I loved that I never knew whether the matchmaker was of this world, or another. As I was reading it I kept thinking that I could totally envision Matchmaker-Matchmaker as one of those Lifetime or Hallmark Channel holiday movies.

Smart, witty and an endearing collection of novellas

Every now and then Contemporary-books.com comes across a book that isn’t among the genres we usually cover, and we like it when a book can gravitate us towards a whole new experience in reading. “Season of Magic” is a collection of Novellas that showcase love stories that are centered around the magical season of Thanksgiving, Chanukah and Christmas. And bonus, the collection includes unique recipes curated by the authors after each of their stories.

Noel, Noel, Noel by Merry Holly features an endearing narrator who finds herself falling for a man with a dark secret. A Cinderella Christmas by Cara Marsi is a witty and magical story about Jessica and how with the help of a fairy god-mother finds love in trapped elevator. Matchmaker-Matchmaker by Bobbi Lerman is our favorite out of the collection. It features a robbery, a rescue and surviving a holiday dinner with a colorful family. The story’s heroine is humorous, smart and lovable–and falls for an equally likable hero. The chemistry between the heroine of Holiday Disaster by Vicki Batman, and Mr Maintenance man is absolutely irresistible. The Yuletide Bride by Gerri Brousseau is a very refreshing historical romance novella, full with moments of glamour, humor and love.

Each of these stories addresses people who no longer believe in love, and the events that conspire around the holiday season to make them believe otherwise. A quick and easy read, “Season of Magic” was read while wrapped up in a warm blanket with a cup of tea on hand and we highly recommend that you read it that way too.

I recently purchased Season of Magic, and was very happily surprised by the 'feel good' stories. I personally loved, Matchmaker, Matchmaker. I could relate to the characters and throughly enjoyed the mystLly aspects. I am a fan of 'happy endings, involving a possibility of something magically. I highly recommend readers to pick this collection of holiday stories up.

An unexpected, unusual YA paranormal

Ghost Moon Night by Jewel Allen is an atmospheric and unusual tale of a village suffering from a long-ago curse, set in the Philippines. It was entirely not what I expected, but I actually enjoyed it more because of that. When I read the blurb of this book, I expected a fast-paced paranormal aventure with a bit of humour thrown in. I certainly got that, but a whole lot more as well.

Allen has managed to create what is essentially a tale about a young man trying to find his place in a village where everyone has known him, and his family, since … well, since forever. Punctuating Antonio’s very ordinary travails in finding a job, being a good son and all the rest of it are some genuinely creepy action scenes featuring flying zombies (some of whom are people that until very recently, lived in the village with Antonio!) with an abiding desire to tear flesh from bones. So instead of just being a zombie, scary book, this is a strange yet satisfying tale with a lot to offer the reader of straight – as in, not paranormal or fantasy – YA fiction.

The Filippino setting and the background themes of religion and cultural tradition running through the book also provide a point of difference for anyone looking for a YA read that isn’t your standard, set-in-a-big-city, sort of a story.
I ended up enjoying this story very much, as much for its sensitive and realistic portrayal of a young man trying to do the best he can and please the people who are important to him as for the freaky langbaun, who have shot up to near the top of my list of “creepiest fictional/mythical monsters”. Definitely give this one a go if you’re looking for something a little bit different and out of the ordinary in the paranormal department.

Hauntingly Good Story

I was so impressed when I read this book in manuscript form several years ago that I filed those pages away so I would be sure to have them to read again. (I still have them!) After reading the manuscript, every time I saw Jewel, I'd ask when she was going to publish her fantastically haunting book. I love the mystery in these pages, the exotic setting of the Philippines (a place Jewel knows first hand) and the motivations of the main character in the choices he made, both good and bad. This hero is multi-dimensional, which makes him refreshingly real and easy to relate to. I loved how the roles of the disparate characters introduced throughout the story came together in the end. Even though I read the story years ago, when I recently read my autographed copy of the book (yay!) I was again surprised at all the plot twists. Rich with Philippine culture and folklore and deliciously creepy langbuan, I predict that this is a story you won't soon forget.
I will admit that there were a few places where I wanted a little more time to enjoy the feeling of the moment before being whisked off to the next scene, but moving the story along is better than having it drag. Besides, that is a minor thing compared to a storyline so enduring that my mind has been pulled back to it several times over the years. For being original and memorable and well written, it gets 5 big, shiny stars!

A good mystery book

I was given this book for free to do a honest review. This book started out a horror story then as it goes into the modern day it seemed like he was going to be a book I wouldn't like but as I continued to read it got really good. I was pulled into the story and kept turning the pages to see what was going to happen in the end. This book is about a curse being released onto a village but a young boy was saved as he tried to save the pirates. As the years go on the night of no moon the evil spirits where released upon this village. It took a priest and a brave boy named Antonio and his friend to end this curse. You will have to read the book to find out how. This book is idea for all ages. Hope you have as good a time reading this as I sure did. Thanks Jewell Allen for giving us this story!

Hottest Shifter Romance!

I can't sing enough praises for this book. Seriously. It totally caught me off guard. I've never read a lion shifter romance before, and couldn't believe how HOT this one is! I love Leo, like LOOOOOVE him. He's sexy and sarcastic. And the whole concept of the Lion falling for the Doe is actually totally sexy. You won't be disappointed in this one. Guaranteed.

I absolutely LOVED this shifter novella! Leo and Daphne are great together, and Kristen's writing style sucks you in from the first chapter and doesn't let go! I can't wait for this story to continue, because 1.) It's HOT and well written, and 2.) It is set in my home town of Woodland Park, CO! Woohoo! #bonuspoints

Not my thing, but nice

This book is a sweet, predictable romance that reads quickly. If you like that kind of thing, this book is absolutely for you. The love scenes are well-done, and very sweet.

There were a few things I didn't care for, but these are all personal taste. I'm including them only so that others who share those tastes know. I'm not saying the book is bad; it's a fine story. I didn't like it for a few reasons. Obviously, don't read any further if you don't want to be spoiled.

1. The mixed types of weres needs to have an explanation for why fate (and the book all-but states it's fate) put these two together. Again, they're a fine couple, but *why* did her magic or whatever pick him?

2. The hunters that are aware that there are shapeshifters in the woods and hunt them anyway. The does have a tell, and hunters know they're killing what are basically people. I couldn't conceive of why that was allowed to persist. We have people in the real world get upset about puppies getting mistreated; why wouldn't PETA or even the bucks be helping the does?

3. The defenselessness of the does doesn't make sense. Real deer can mess someone up if cornered; even if they prefer to run, they can fight for their lives. Daphne's culture might have sheltered her, but if that was the intention, it didn't come through the text.

4. The emphasis on virginity. I do like that Daphne kinda stops caring as much about this, but as a culture, the purity of virgins is overrated.

5. Any woman after Leo was mean or a skank. I can't stand when a woman is built up by tearing other women down, no matter the reason.

If you don't mind or if you like the above points, then definitely pick up this book! It's a fine read.

Great story that the whole family can enjoy!

First off, a confession. Blackthorne Forest isn’t exactly my kind of book. Not only is it YA, it was written from the perspective of a teenage girl. Since I’m not a teenage girl, and have almost no patience for kids who aren’t my own, I expected to feel alienated both as an adult reader and as a man. But fortunately, that didn’t happen. Rather, I got sucked into the story. I’ll admit there were moments when I was reminded why I don’t make a habit of venturing outside my preferred genres, yet as the story moved along, I was constantly thinking: “My kids are gonna love this when they get a little older.” As a parent, I appreciate the author’s commitment to writing something G-rated that I’ll be able to comfortably share with my kids. Nothing more frustrating than a YA novel loaded with foul language and inappropriate innuendo, so Blackthorne Forest was particularly nice in that regard. Looking forward to loading the family bookshelf with more from this author.

First class YA Fantasy

It’s hard to believe Blackthorne Forest is Claire Fogel’s first novel for this modern fantasy/ fairy tale is a superbly written with an excellent sense of pacing, mood and vividly described events. Like all the best fiction in this genre, the novel mixes morality tale with maturational motif as Cara (fifteen, almost sixteen) learns about the meaning of friendship, young love and discovers an inner strength previously hidden from her. It is also about finding out who one is, in this instance quite literarily for it is Cara’s discovery of her real father that drives much of the story as he becomes both mentor figure and also provides a great deal of the necessary exposition.
One aspect I especially enjoyed about the work was the juxtaposition of the urban and rural settings, both possessing their own individual charm. Fogel manages to create a town that seems almost timeless, one that struck me as somehow being set in an idealised nineteen fifties middle America – this despite the presence of mod cons and mobile phones. In contrast we have the eponymous Blackthorne Forest, Cara’s childhood playground, a former “favourite place to play” but now a place of “refuge.” The forest is at the same time both of this world and not, a gateway between the ‘normal’ and the fantastical. The fact that it is “frequently surrounded by fog” I thought was a nice touch as was the way Cara corrects her friend with the deadpan reply “Just Elves” when Amy asks if the forest is full of Elves and Fairies.
Overall, a very enjoyable read and one I would recommend to all fans of this genre.

Amazing First Novel

The author has created a place for teens as well as adults. Fast moving, interesting and the dialogue is flawless. I really had trouble putting it down, you just want to read and read. I actually cared about the characters and sure hope there are more books to come.

I was very disappointed by this book. The author gives no credentials and rewrites information from other books without giving credit. The grammar errors belie the fact that she had no editorial oversight. I wish I could get my money back.

The Insulin Resistance Diet Concept is a handy guide to help anyone gain control over his health by making smart eating choices, exercising regularly, reducing stress and having a good social life. According to the book, following the diet will certainly make your our bodies more healthy and it may help prevent diabetes, heart attack, and stroke.

The book delves into the the specifics of insulin resistance, and what a person at risk can do to get his health back on track. In a nut shell, we can begin to eat unprocessed, non-refined, natural whole foods. Easy, example foods and menus are given. I was pleasantly surprised that I was already eating many of the foods recommended, but was horrified by the idea that my regular portions were WAY TOO BIG.

I finished the book knowing that I had to make some adjustments to my diet and my exercise routine. I also, probably for the first time, began to realize how important stress reduction and regular social interaction are to a healthy disease free life.

Thank you, Kathy Wilson, for a book that will immediately lead to changes in some of my lifestyle habits that will surely make my life better all the way around. Good Job!
