It has a good balance of theory

I was really surprised when I read through this book. I have read a number of so called ‘Macro Photography’ reference books in the past. The majority of these books are usually expensive and provide little value to people who want to learn about macro photography. This book on the other hand is completely different.
It is actually tailored to people who want to learn and improve their macro photography. It has a good balance of theory, macro ideas and practical tips for beginners and advanced macro photographers. It will actually help you to think and live like a macro photographer! I highly recommend it to anyone who is serious about improving their macro photography!

A Good Book for Beginners

Read this book as part of the Kindle Lender options and found it to be a quick, simple, easy style read. Being interested in macro and having shot macro and close-up photos extensively, I was looking for a book to expand my knowledge on the subject.

The author’s topics in the book are quite extensive. Miller covers what macro photography is, the differences between macro and close-up, magnification and calculating the ratio and things to consider such as depth of field, to color harmony and theory. He covers compositional rules, equipment you need, what each piece does and some DIY equipment ideas for those on a budget. Topics to finish the book include: common issues found in macro photography, sharpness, photo stacking, different location ideas to shoot, unique types of macro such as with water and oil, and becoming a better photographer.

While I did find some gold nuggets among the information presented, I found other information repeated and areas seemingly glossed over and it left me wondering what I missed. Also in the kindle edition I found the pictures quite small, even when zoomed for better viewing. One thing Miller did do was consistently stress your need to study your photo subject and understand its habitat, such as with insects and practice, practice, practice. Study and practice should be done for any area of photography and it was nice to see an author stress this, as many gloss over this requirement. Therefore, I find the book more suited for those interested in and starting out in macro and close-up photography.

Great in depth bible to everything about macro photography

Fantastic book with lots of really in depth instructions and guides on how to take the best macro photos. As an amateur photographer I knew a little bit about macro photography but this book really was an eye opener and taught me a lot of tips and tricks to taking some great photos. Some of the tips are also applicable to everyday photography so it's an added benefit I get from this book. I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to get into macro photography but doesn't know where to start. I think it's also a useful book for those who might be a bit more advanced because there's still a lot to learn.

Reading Better than Booksmart was an excellent help for getting me out of my college rut! I’m in my third year and I’ve been feeling like something is missing out of my daily class-study-class routine. Author Padhani talks about a range of extracurricular options to pad not just your resume but your life. Some of the insights in this book I hadn’t even considered and maybe was too afraid my freshman year to try. An excellent college prep book but it’s not just about the clubs, Padhani talks about after college too. He walks through how to build your resume, networking, the interviews and even attire. I was really impressed with the span of subjects covered (there are so many I didn't mention). I highlighted a lot of sections and I’m going to reference it for years. Give it a read if you’re going off to college, already there or even out of college, I recommend it.

Great resource for students

Better Than Booksmart is one of the best resources I’ve read for undergraduates or high school seniors who want to make the most of their college experience. It’s a quick, but thorough read that covers all of the essentials—extracurriculars, networking, perfecting your resume, and job interviews. Even as a recent grad, I learned best practices that I will be using on my resume and in interviews in the future. The only thing that could make the read easier is if it had a clearer timeline for undergraduates to follow. But definitely still a must read!

Filled with great antidotes, advice, and tips, Padhani has created a resource that everyone can take something from.

I am finishing my college years, and the section on negotiating and evaluating your salaries and determining whether to pursue graduate school was especially relevant to me.

All in all, a fun, beneficial read.

Worth the read

Christian science fiction is a new genre for me ~ which I found captivating. It's worth the read. This is the first book for this author, with a sequel in the works ~ World Eternal: Proselytes. Clearly there is more to the story, and I look forward to its conclusion.

I'm glad I read it

I met the author at a book fair and decided I'd try her book because she was an engaging person. When I began reading, at first I thought, "Oh, oh, not my kind of book..." I don't typically search for a book about extraterrestrials... but she had impressed me, so I pushed on. I'm glad I read it. She built up some suspense and raised some questions, or her characters did, and I'm giving it four stars. I do expect to read the sequel so I find out what happened to a couple of the characters and the outcome for earth's people....

This book adroitly mixes Biblical Christianity with Science Fiction and raises the important question. If we are offered everything from someone (or something) other than God himself, how would we react? Well plotted with believable characters. I am anxious to read the sequel.

Wooden bunks strewn with straw, barbed wire fence, and machine gun towers make up their tenement, their home. Their guards, the Black Cats, provide order and discipline, motivation. For one Server, Medical Provider Blair Huxley, questions continue to plague him. He suffers from the treasonous ailment termed individual thought. A chance encounter with a Prog at the Medical Rights Facility adds to Huxley’s questions, questions concerning the morality of the system of which he is a part. His journey towards answers brings him face to face with the true meaning of Chainge. “Knowledge creates choice; choice leads to chaos. Chaos begets pain, strife, conflict, and the insidious act of thought. We offer the people something far better: ignorance. The body is but an easel, ignorance the blank slate of the mind, an empty canvas upon which we freely paint, in brush strokes of various hues, the images of bliss. Rest assured, Server Huxley, we are not tyrants or villains, we are not despots or dictators; we are visionaries, we are emancipators, and we are artists. A person cannot want what they do not know exists. We keep the Served blissful by keeping them ignorant. It is as though the Served are a donkey following a carrot on a stick. We keep a simple pleasure before them. orignial, though-provoking story

Chainge is a thought provoking, dystopian tale of a human being fighting against mind control for his own individual wants and needs. I was deeply immersed in this world, silently pushing the narrator forward in his journey.

Blair Huxley lives in a world that is divided between the served - who have their every desire fulfilled - and the servers - who live like slaves to provide for the other half. Hux is a medical server who is transported to a new City (called a progressive) to serve. On the train ride to the new progressive, we meet the Black Cats, massive men who act as 'protectors' by keeping the servers in line. Hux gets to see first hand what happens if a server tries to run away...and it is not pretty. Hux also sees a fellow server named Julie for the first time. He immediately has unthinkable thoughts about her beauty and feels a connection to her.

"Do any of you need a good washing of dirty thoughts that may be hiding in the corner of your minds, or do you realize your freedom"?

From the beginning of their existence, the servers are taught that they gain freedom by serving others. That by taking away their individual choices, they are free from the burden of consequence.

After starting his job at the new progressive, Hux starts struggling with realizations that something is wrong with the way they live their life, and he starts to have self-serving thoughts about himself and Julie. The story had me on the edge of my seat wondering what decision he would make next and how it would play out. I became so invested in Hux and wanted so badly for him to be free of his chains.

"No man is free who is compelled to provide for another against his will, another who should provide for himself."

Some moments made my heart warm and others made me grit my teeth. The ending blew my mind! Not what I expected at all and I know that it was a powerful ending for a stand alone, BUT I'm hoping that the story doesn't end here!

Honestly, the only reason I didn't give this book a solid 5 stars is because I wanted just a little but more in the beginning to explain how society became the way that it was. I was itching for more details in that area but obviously as the story progressed it didn't much matter.

I was very happy with the writing style - crisp and to the point. The story flowed beautifully. While reading a book, I, of course, know how much I like it if I cannot put it down, but I also know by how vividly I create images of the story world in my imagination. That is an amazing talent that writers possess, to give that gift to us readers. I had a clear picture of Hux and his world throughout this entire book!

Thank you, Ken Dean, for giving me the opportunity to read this wonderful novel. I cannot wait to see what more will come from you in the future!

Compelling and addictive, but not as original as it could have been.

Service is freedom. Ignorance is freedom. Two sides of the same Delta. With change, there are bound to be chains.

The system is perfect. Everybody is free.
Blair Huxley (which is obviously a nod to Aldous Huxley and George Orwell), is a medical server who begins to question that system.

Chainge has a very interesting premise; the Servers and Served, Progressives, tenements, and of course the Provider, are all ingredients for a unique world which offers a lot of potential.

The writing style is compelling and addictive. From the first scene in the train you are thrown into Hux's world and it feels like the reader is offered a dwelling place inside his head for the duration of the story. As you feel as one and the same person, you just have to know what's going to happen next, right? I have to say that the violence, although it doesn't contain that much gore, is very intense and had me whimper at moments. At times I wondered if a more subtle oppression of the Served would've been more believable and in conformity with their conditioning.

The only hindrance I had with fully appreciating this book, is that aspects of the plot and its structure felt more like a mix of 1984 and Brave New World, which was a shame. His fight against the system, a certain betrayal, and a conversation between Hux and the Overseer that has the same feel to it as the conversation between John and Mustapha Mond (BNW), all contributed to a more predictable plot. Although I do think the end was brilliant and the only way to go, it reminded me too much of 1984. All in all, I wish the outline of the story would have been more original, especially since the world itself is very authentic.

Would I recommend this to others? Yes, I would. I like bleak dystopias that are seemingly without a chain of hope. If you feel the same, I think here's a story you are very likely to enjoy. The author is talented, and I hope he will grow in finding his own style.

A Great Read - Thought Provoking and Intelligent

There have always been "haves" and "have nots" in any society.
"Chainge" by Ken Dean takes this concept to the extreme.

This book is thought provoking, intriguing, interesting and even horrifying at times. It is a truly great read.

Blair Huxley (Hux) works as a Server for the Collective's Medical Rights Facilities. He has no say about what Progressive (city) he lives or works in and can be moved to a different location at any time without warning. He has no rights and cannot refuse. Servers are told that "You exist for the sake of and by the grace of Our State and the all-giving Provider." Those who resist or try to escape are punished and can even be beaten or killed.

The story begins on a train. Hux is being moved to a new Progressive. He notices a particularly beautiful Server and when the Black Cat overseer notices his interest he beats Hux with a baton. "Contact is expressly forbidden. Desire is forbidden. It is not for Servers to partake of such wantonness."

Arriving at his new home, Hux reflects on the Progs that the Servers exist to serve.

"The Progs... were free from discomfort, from worry, from work, from personal responsibility, free from accountability, free to lead a perfectly blissful existence. The Servers were free to give of themselves, free from self-interest and selfishness, free from the thoughts that complicated our lives prior to the evolution of Our State. We were free to serve others and see their rights fulfilled ... That was what the Provider dictated as best, as fair, as right, as the common good."

When Hux begins working at the new medical facility he sees things that make him start to question the system that rules his life. He begins asking questions and observing those around him.

He begins to realize that the Served are just as much slaves as the Servers; they just exist in a better looking cage.

He also meets Jules (the beautiful Server from the train) and he begins to have feelings for her. Feelings are not allowed and most Servers are incapable of emotion. But, to question the system is to commit treason.

Hux must decide if he has the inner strength necessary to escape from his life of servitude? And can he take Jules with him? Will she even want to go?

This novel is a riveting read with plenty of food for thought. This book crosses into multiple genres, including Dystopian fiction, science fiction and drama.

What I Liked About This Book:

I love that the author has fully imagined his world right down to the smallest detail. For example: Servers have the Delta logo tattooed on their hands with the delta pointing away from them to remind them that they are serving others, not themselves.

I also enjoyed the intelligent writing style. The author makes the assumption that his readers will be smart enough to understand what he is communicating without having to 'dumb it down'. Too often I feel like authors think their readers are stupid and need to have every concept explained to them.

The author shows that he has a vast knowledge of brain washing techniques and ways in which large groups of people can be indoctrinated and controlled by a smaller group. For example, each morning after their mandatory exercise routine, the Servers must recite "The Server's Creed."
"Service is freedom! Service is our one true right! We are free from self-interest! We are free to serve!" The Servers should hate having to do this every day and they should want to rebel against their harsh treatment and substandard living conditions. Instead "we appreciated the Black Cats' constant concern for our well-being, their taking the time to instill in us the reason why we serve, why we are so vital to the survival of Our State."

I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Hux's internal struggle and was curious to learn more about the world in which he lives.

I also really liked the ending. It leaves open so many possibilities, but also could just be the end. It will be interesting to see where the author goes from here.

I give this book a rating of 4 out of 5 stars. The 5th star would have been given if the story had included more historic information. We know that something went drastically wrong in the world, but we never find out what it was or how it happened that "The Provider" rose to power.

I look forward to reading more books by Ken Dean.

From glove-maker to history's most acclaimed writer...

Welcome to London, William Shakespeare is a fictionalized chronicle of history's most celebrated author and playwright's "lost years." It's evident that D. Lawrence-Young has done significant research in writing this book, as the details surrounding what we do know about Shakespeare during this time are evenly applied throughout the story. These scant facts are used as the story's stepping stones, the parts between filled in cleverly by Lawrence-Young--and Shakespeare is brought to life.

Set against the turbulent Catholic-Protestant bloodbath of Elizabethan England, we start in the Henley Street home of Shakespeare's parents, John and Mary. I was impressed by the authors ability to reach deeper into Shakespeare's past and into the troubles of his father, who started high, fell low, and was finally able to hitch his wagon to his son's shooting star to rise again.

As a reader, I have the advantage of having visited the Henley Street house--now the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust--and was delighted to have it fleshed out for me again by Lawrence-Young. It's hard to imagine Shakespeare as a glove maker, but that was his early course, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. He meets Anne Hathaway who is eight years his senior--and in a forecasting of the celebrity to come--he impregnates her before marriage. He's happy with Anne, but has ambition beyond a husband, father, and glove maker. He visits London, returns to Stratford-upon-Avon, and leaves again a final time. This is when we are transported to London during one of its most tumultuous eras, to accompany Shakespeare on his ascent to the author we recognize today.

I enjoyed reading Lawrence-Young's Welcome to London, William Shakespeare. The story is well written, entertaining, and easy to read. I would recommend it to anyone looking for an amusing interpretation of what Shakespeare's early life and years in London might have been like.

Pure conjecture, but a fun read anyway

Practically nothing is known about Shakespeare's early life so this tale is absolutely fictional. However, the portrait of London and theater life in London in the late 16th century as well as of the overall political mood were accurate. In other words, the story was plausible.
I enjoyed the author's descriptions of the city and of the people in it. It is definitely worth thinking about how this particular period gave birth to some of the most brilliant writers the English language has produced (notable Marlowe and Shakespeare). I also got a real kick out of imagining how the Shakespeare plays were received by the audience of the era in which they were written, and for whom they were written! What must it have been like to see a new play produced for the first time, knowing that the author really meant to entertain you! Posterity was probably the least of his worries!
The tale is light, and still profound. I definitely recommend it.

Interesting story.

This is an interesting tale about the life of William Shakespeare beginning when he was a young lad and had to leave school to work in his family's glove making business. He didn't like the work but wanted to help his family so he plugged along. All Will wanted to do was write plays and poetry so that's what he did in his spare time. He got married and had three children but found he could not be a serious writer in the small village of Stratford so he left his family and went to London. There he was hired by a theater owner to write plays and met many other writers. He was very happy there.

This book was well researched for the time period. I found the issues they had with religion were very informative and explained well. It made me so glad that I didn't live in those times. Given how little is known about Shakespeare, this was a very interesting take on his life. There were many times when Will said he wanted to write something that people would like and would make a difference, when I thought "You did make a difference. We are reading your work hundreds of years later!" So I definitely got caught up in the story.

While I found this book to be well written and interesting, I prefer thinking of Shakespeare as a brilliant writer and not the man that left his family behind in order to follow his dreams. I liked the characters in this book and thought they were well developed but I didn't like Will at all. Too bad since the book was all about him.

I recommend Female Circumcision and Clitoridectomy in the United States to readers who want to know more about clitoral surgeries in the American context. The book would also make an excellent teaching tool; it would fit well on syllabi for women's history, the history of medicine, or the history of sex. NURSING CLIO Rodriguez vividly and persuasively places the clitoris at the center of a centuries-long medical debate about what's wrong with the female body, and how it can be surgically adapted to androcentric sexual norms. Female circumcision, from masturbation-cure to sex aid.

Contrary to popular belief, female circumcision was never isolated to the African continent. It was widely practiced in the USA, but unlike the African origin, female circumcision in the USA had nothing to do with keeping wives from straying or making them submissive. It had more to do with paranoid prudishness and fear of criminality. Rodrigues paints a picture of this divisive issue (even then) as being motivated by several unjust philosophies; sexism, prudish mores, racism, and eugenics.

In the chapter Female Sexual Degeneracy and the Enlarged Clitoris, the author refers to prison doctors and their skewed research on female sexual habits. She describes hoe a NY prison doctor described black women as having oversized clitorises, making them hypersexual lesbians. Sarah Baartman, an enslaved African woman, was used by physicians as a highly inaccurate example of the African woman’s body, and these racist physicians made claims that women in hot climates had larger genitalia. As with most medical research as the time, a lot of it was falsified, and physicians were rarely questions or criticized for their theories. This was the same generation of physicians that researched the infamous Kalikak and Jute families in New Jersey.

Fast forward to the 1940’s. Attitudes towards women, though still unequal, had changed. Doctors were now promoting the idea of orgasms as being perfectly healthy for women (perhaps thanks in part to Dr. Kinsey’s research) and doctors were no longer fanatically against the idea of masturbation. It was at this time that doctors looked into removing the clitoral hood as a way for women to achieve greater sexual pleasure. By the 1970’s more and more women were having the clitoral hood removed to increase sexual pleasure, and it worked.

To see the progress in attitudes towards sex, look at the way the USA changed. WWI left loads of men dead, so women flooded into clerical jobs, and the attitude towards women changed. Then the Great Depression hit, and the once powerful church, an institution that had been the biggest welfare provider, was hit hard. Religion was no longer as dominant as it had been before, and thanks to widespread poverty, birth control, in whatever form existed, became widely accepted. In fact, birth control was so widely practiced in the Depression, that the era is referred to as the “baby bust.” Then came WWII, women entered the workforce, and the role of women changed further.

Sarah Rodriguez’ book is well-researched, fair, balanced, and highly detailed. It uses the idea of female circumcision as an example of the changes going on in US history.

Well researched, well cited, easy to read. Left me wanting to learn more.

I recently returned to school for bioethics and have focused (mostly) on the ethics of infant male circumcision thus far. It soon become apparent that to be accurate and effective in my discussion of the ethics of male circumcision, I'd need to have a thorough understanding of female and intersex genital surgeries as well.

This book was the perfect detailed summary of female genital cutting in the United States. It is an easy read, well cited, and organized chronologically which helps me compare the attitudes toward the female genitals and sexuality with those of males at the same time. Since my main focus has been on male genital cutting, there were several points I was craving a mention of the male parallel, but understand that's not the focus of the book so it's certainly not an oversight. I do feel like the author could have/should have addressed cosmetic genital surgeries (the ones she touched on briefly in the introduction) performed by plastic surgeons in the US in more depth. Then again, that may have strayed too far from her focus on the clitoral hood and clitoris itself as only hoodectomy would fall in that scope.

I would be interested in reading a book (perhaps this means I should write it) focusing on the legal aspects of female circumcision and clitoridectomy in the US and abroad and the legal double standard in how the FGM laws are applied to women from developing countries compared to American or European women. Example: an American woman wanting her labia trimmed (labiaplasty which falls in the definition of FGM Type II) is making an autonomous decision about cosmetic enhancement (based on what is culturally considered attractive or normal) to her body while an African woman wanting to have her labia trimmed (also based on what is culturally considered attractive or normal) is a victim of her culture and mutilated.

Overall, a very well researched and well written book I hope will help open the eyes of those who think FGM is only done in "uncivilized" countries.

This is the first honest ebola book!

This book is good because it boils it all down and cuts out the Bullshi#! Also dispels a bunch of myths about cures.

Lots of the inFo is culled from the CDC and NIH, but for $0.99 it's definitely worth it.
