Highly recommended, although only if you've read the prior books ...

Well-written, as always, action-packed third book from McPhail in this series, and it leaves you wanting more, waiting for the fourth!! Highly recommended, although only if you've read the prior books and are up to speed with the storyline. Great series!!

A Pattern of Shadow & Light Continues -- Sophisticated, Transcendent, and Must-Read Epic Fantasy

I generally don't write reviews. I don't have the time. But this book merits one. Indeed, it requires one.
I believe everyone who enjoys epic fantasy must read this series and this book. I also believe that even if you typically avoid the genre, you'll find this series and book transcendent - meaning it transcends the genre -- with its exploration of life, relationships, ethics, morals, and the consequences of free choice. I'd think that anyone who enjoys good fiction will find Ms. McPhail's tale compelling. I'm sure I'll read it over and over again, just like every so often I'll reread The Lord of the Rings, A Game of Thrones, and The Wheel of Time. In my view, this series ranks in that tier.
Paths of Alir has just been released. I will do my best to avoid any spoilers. Forgive me if, as a result, I'm not as comprehensive or I seem overly vague. I want other readers to develop their own unvarnished opinions while they enjoy the story.
Some readers found the first book, Cephrael's Hand, difficult in that it takes some work to keep the characters and their story lines straight; I too was grateful that Ms. McPhail included a list of Dramatis Personae. But I now know why she did what she did: This book gives us the overall structure. It reflects Ms. McPhail's vision in a way that feels to me Miltonic. Paradise Lost, the brilliant epic poem, starts in the middle with Lucifer and his angels discovering that they are in Hell. Then we get the backstory and explanation for how and why they ended up there. In the first two books of this series, we're left wondering how the story began and why characters do what they do. This book, like the later books of Paradise Lost, goes a long way to explaining both how and why Ms. McPhail's world is as it is. You can't compare most fantasy series to great works of Literature.
Much happens in this book that I suspect may be controversial. You see Ms. McPhail's characters in a different light, depending upon the choices that they make. And the choices they don't make. They are as complex as real people are. There is no perfect person; all of her characters have flaws, just as we do. You'll see the good and the bad. Your perception of those you love and those you hate may change during the course of this book. It did for me. And I'm still digesting the ending. I don't know how I feel about it. But I do know I "feel" about it, in the same way that good fiction affects the reader.
I'll leave it at this for now. As I wrote, this book is sophisticated, transcendent, and must-read fiction. I hope you enjoy the journey as much as I have. I cannot wait until her next book is released; I'll be marking time with other series as I wait.

The constant kidnappings and rescue's get boring. This book is compared to A Song of ...

These books are only ok. The constant kidnappings and rescue's get boring. This book is compared to A Song of Ice and Fire in some of the reviews. This book is not of that quality. I find myself skipping whole chapters because it is only more of the same blah blah blah. They get together do some training. Then they make plans to go somewhere. Then one of them gets kidnapped. They regroup, train and then rescue the kidnapped. This happens over and over.
