You can choose your friends, but you can't choose your neighbors. For a full quarter of his life, twenty-year-old Gus Lancer has been a resident patient at Haven Space, a sanatorium and rehab clinic once isolated in the chaparral of southern California but now surrounded by the suburban sprawl of inland Orange County. The peculiar degenerative condition shredding his nervous system has paralyzed him from the waist down and robbed him of all but the most strangled attempts at human speech, but he has recently discovered that he can apparently understand and communicate with the various animals he meets. Rolling his wheelchair out under the care of El Brujo, one of Haven's therapy cats, he becomes more and more involved in the lives of the humans, dogs, cats, crows, squirrels and others forced into the close proximity of the neighborhood. And when some of these neighbors begin acting in a most unneighborly fashion, Gus finds that he might be the only one capable of keeping events from spiraling completely out of control.

I love this book
By avirginiareader
I love this book. Gus is a young man with a debilitating illness confined to a wheelchair. Even his speech is affected by his illness. He resides in a residential nursing home where he has his own room yet can travel wherever he can go in the wheelchair. The best thing going for him is his ability to communicate with animals–most notable the nursing home cat--El Brujo, a couple of crows, an adorable squirrel and a enthusiastic puppy. The situations they get themselves into made me laugh aloud. It was a delightful book, light-hearted and fun. I was sorry when it ended, but closed it with a smile on my face. I hope the author writes a sequel to Gus and his animal friends. I recommend it when you want a story that will have you smiling all day.

A great holiday or birthday present for anyone
By Shauna S. Roberts
I usually start a review by giving the genre, but this novel defies genre conventions. I won't even try to put a label on it.

But I have no hesitation about labeling its quality. NEIGHBORS is a wonderful book—well written and with well-defined characters.

August "Gus" Lancer, age ~20, develops an unusual new talent: He can now communicate with animals. But has his progressive degenerative nerve disease given him this talent in compensation for his increasing inability to articulate his speech in talking with people, or is his talent a delusion of his deteriorating brain?

Despite his worries, Gus goes with the flow, letting his therapy cat persuade him first to leave his room at Haven Space nursing home to watch a cartoon show about ponies and then to leave Haven Space for trips about the neighborhood in his wheelchair. The novel details his encounters and growing friendship with crows, a squirrel, dogs, and eventually people, coming to a place of peace.

What most impressed me about this book was that the author completely understands the mental, psychological, and physical world of someone with a serious chronic condition. My face was always ready to cringe as I read, but it never did because the author did not make a single mis-step. For this reason, I suggest this as a great book to give to healthy people and able-bodied people to help them understand what life is like for the rest of us. But anyone would enjoy this book, with its powerful theme of friendship (apparently a theme of the cartoon as well?) and its example of how to live with the knowledge of death hanging over you.

When the book ended, I was sad. I wanted to continue to have adventures with Gus and his friends.

Hard to put down
By Sue
I was impressed by the quality of the writing in this clever and unique story, and it grabbed my emotions as well. The animal characters are so wonderfully described, I had no trouble buying into the premise that they could talk to Gus, the human hero. Hard to put down.
