Since we move in TIME through a SEQUENCE of SPACES revealed for everyone

A welcome fourth edition of Francis Ching's excellent book on the fundamentals of architecture. Ching (now seventy-two) seems to have cornered the market on accessible visual book on the subject, I already have his 'Building construction illustrated' and the 'Visual dictionary of architecture'. This new edition of 'Architecture' uses the highly pictorial format as all his books.

Each of the seven chapters starts with drawings of very basic forms and then expands the concepts using flat plans and dimensional illustrations of buildings (all of which have a caption with location, architect and date) to reveal the essence of structures through the centuries. Can the subject be that simple? Well, of course not but Ching makes it seem so by explaining the principles in straightforward way.

One of the lovely features of the book is that it all hangs together with one look, rather than use photos of buildings of varying quality they are all illustrations and obviously tie-in with all the flat plans and other graphics. I've read a criticism of his books because they are set in the Adobe Tecton type which some consider rather unreadable (the font was based on his first book which was entirely hand-lettered by Cassandra Adams and she did the drawings too) I slightly agree but fortunately all the text in his books is essentially short and long captions rather than pages with columns of text set in Tecton.

The book is ideal for students and the general (curious) reader.

In depth coverage of form - space - order -- equivalent to a college course

This book includes a code than can be used to access an online interactive resource hosted by the publisher, Wiley. The resource is specifically intended to be utilized by students. The link provided (on the inside front cover of the book is not correct. The link provided (as of 10/30/14) brings you to a page on Wiley's site that does not have the "Login" feature described. A next step (not described in the instructions" is to selected "Visit Companion Site" under "Student Resources." Once there, you can begin the login process to access the interactive resources for students (aka readers).

I cannot emphasize enough that what you are paying for and getting here is far more than some architectural sketches in a book. The interactive online resources include a guided (narrated) tutorial with animated computer graphics and photos that ARE NOT IN THE TEXT which teach basic architecture. In fact the collective resources, which you can progress through sequentially or access randomly are substantially an introductory architecture (on form, space, and order) course in full.

As the title suggests, the focus is on form, space, and order. There is no substance on materials, textures, and light (although there are many of the figures suggest and explain views and light, they are not focused directly on light, just indirectly.

The examples given represent a reasonable diversity of global architecture, but tend to be focused on commercial or institutional architecture (churches, schools, stadiums, public venues, etc.). There are examples of private residences, villages, etc., but these are clearly a minority. Explanations of space in the context of these is similar in scale. But there are still many examples of personal space. For example, two pages are given just on human scale.

This is a very broad and expansive coverage. It covers elements of design that cross over into graphic design (figures and contrast of type-set as examples). But, it isn't "all inclusive." It certainly is not the focus of the book to cover materials, textures, and light for example, and these are rarely examined.

I appreciate the value of the interactive content, but was also surprised that all of the interactive content is interactive as narrative slidehow online. When I think "interactive" I don't think just trick-play (play/stop/back/forward), The content also includes flashcards for testing recall of architectural terms and definitions as well as 3D animations. But, when I think "interactive." So I was surprised that there was no downloadable content such as AutoCAD DWG files or some equivalent format to explore interactively. The scale of drawings in the text makes it very difficult (for even a full page 8 1/2" x 11" page) to see the details on commercial, industrial, or institutional scale buildings featured through the book. The only downloadable content is a PDF or XLS file with the names, locations, dates, architect's name, and geo coordinates of illustrations in the text (which are not cross referenced by page number in the book unfortunately).

There is also virtually no coverage of site planning and cultural context. Although a broad range of cultural variations are depicted, the design (even limited the criteria of the text) certainly must be contextual (think St. Patrick's Cathedral with glass buildings on either side).

If you are only going to buy one book on introductory architecture, I honestly would not recommend this book because I feel that while it covers that topics in the title extensively and well, it misses, in my humble opinion, the most intimate details of architecture which motivates many architectures and which certainly should be part of that introduction. But I don't think that is the purpose of this book, so the reader should not be disappointed not to find elements of materials, texture, light(color), etc.

Must-have updated textbook for architects

This is a must have book for all architecture and urban design students and anyone interested in design. The book is the same classic text that I had in architecture school many years ago but updated with a special digital interactive resource center. Once you login to Wiley's site and register using the special code inside the book, you can open up the digital content which includes video animations of the book content, flashcards to review and study key concepts and definitions and downloadable content (which currently includes Google Earth coordinates of buildings listed in the book). The flash cards are great for studying - see photo I attached.
Overall this is a very good modernized version of the classic Ching textbook for architecture. The addition of the digital content adds incredible value to this must-have book and is perfect for students in design school.

Highly recommended!

Gary W Burnett is an all-round authority on the blues and it's clear that the writing of his latest book, examining the inseparable relationship between the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the expression of hardship and hope found in blues music, was undoubtedly a labour of love. Burnett's expert grasp of early 20th century American history and New Testament theology allows him to expand on how, in particular, Jesus' sermon on the mount spoke to those oppressed by white masters in the Deep South and still challenges us today in terms of our response to the persecuted. Keen to educate as well as challenge, Burnett avoids the pitfall of excluding newcomers to either the blues or Christianity by bringing to life the experiences of the early blues pioneers and their mistreated kinfolk by taking selected lyrics from their songs and expanding on them - effectively giving the reader a portal through which to tap first hand into their lives. Cannot recommend this book highly enough to anyone interested in the hugely fascinating and culturally, morally and spiritually significant subject of the gospel and the blues.

The Blues a call for Justice

Gary W Burnett uniquely combines his love of blues music with his scholarly knowledge of New Testiment theology to produce this very accessible analysis of the origins of blues coming as it did out of the horror of slavery and its aftermath, the poverty of the Deep South.

Burnett senses the same lament in the contemporary world and the Blues are a wake up call to the affluent consumerist culture. These voices call us to pursue justice for the opressed and voiceless.

For Burnett this same voice is heard in the Gospel, the good news, that champions the cause of poor, the abused and the oppressed.'

I readily concur with Michael J. Gilmour who writes: 'The Gospel According to the Blues is at once a primer in American music, culture, and race and religious history. Gary Burnett moves deftly from lyrics to theory and back again, from Blind Lemon Jefferson to the insights of contemporary scholarship. Highly readable, thoroughly researched, and with deep respect for the art form on every page.with deep respect for the art form on every page'.There are many scholars and musicians mentioned in this wonderful book. Many of the Biblical scholars I had already come across,the great Albert Schweitzer gets a mention, plus Scot McKnight, Walter Brueggemann and N.T. Wright to name a few more, but there were others I was introduced to for the first time. However, what to me was an unforgettable experience was being introduced to those early blues musicians such as Blind Willie Johnson, B.B. King and Charlie Patten through their sad stories, and then listening (with the help of the guide at the end of each chapter - and Youtube) to their songs of angst and sorrow, and sometimes hope. Reading this book was certainly an enlightening experience with regard to learning about the plight of the black man in America,from his time of slavery up until the present day.However a word of warning,though in many parts it is a most enjoyable read, with an emphasis on the Christian hope, this is not a 'feel good' book, as Dr Burnett can often make you squirm a little in your seat! One memorable quotation from his book states:'Living under the reign of the Messiah changes everything -greed, acquisitiveness, consumerism all become false gods that must be renounced so that the vibrant life of the new humanity can flourish in our own lives and those whose lives we touch.' Excellent Must Read Guide On Chinese Herbs!!

People have been using herbs since the beginning of time to treat ailments. It seems people of today with natural living are beginning to rediscover the healing power and benefits of overall health using herbs. The Chinese use of herbs is the most extensive. The Chinese not only use herbs but the five elements to heal the body without the use of modern medicine but Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Stoecker has the knowledge and the ability to have written such an outstanding guide like no other on Chinese herbs. The book contains so much information but it’s not overwhelming. She opens the book with a very interesting brief history of Chinese herbs which surprisingly dates back over two thousand years clearly proving their effectiveness and staying power throughout time. Listing fifteen of the most commonly used Chinese herbs from astragalus to tang-kuei that also includes what it is, its uses, how much to take and any precautions. Included something women will love is how to keep your skin looking young using of all things Chinese herbs. Excellent is the information on how to use Chinese herbs to lose weight and keep it off. Personally I didn’t know much about Chinese herbs until I read this guide and I wasn’t disappointed as I came away with a wonderful knowledge and application of Chinese herbs. Overall a definite must read for anyone beginning or seeking more information on Chinese herbs but equally beneficial for those already using herbs but wanting more out of Chinese herbs and ultimate health.

Awesome guide to herbal remedies for beginners!

I purchased this book and another book a little while ago to help provide me with a better understanding of herbal remedies. I have a friend who constantly talks about how much she enjoys using herbs in her everyday life; for weight loss, to calm her down, etc. I found this book and knew that I had to get it because I wanted to see if there was going to be a section on herbs that are good for keeping your skin looking healthy. I was impressed to find an entire chapter on this. Stoecker does a fantastic job with this guide as everything is easy to understand and to follow. I have been able to implement some of these herbs into my lifestyle and in turn am seeing the benefits. I am glad that I purchased this book and will highly recommend it to everyone I know. If you are looking for a guide on herbal remedies then I highly encourage you to pick this book up; the information is spot on.

A great, well researched guide

This is a great resource on using herbal remedies. When I was younger, I knew quite a bit about the different herbs and how they can help you stay healthy. However, as I grew older and life got in the way, I found that my knowledge on this subject, like high school algebra, faded. Reading this book however was a great refresher. This is a great, well researched guide, that is packed full of great information. Highly recommended.

Sci-fi with a Twist

Although I’m not much of a sci-fi fan, I read this book recently since it was recommended by a close friend. Darren James laid the story out in the most unusual way I’ve ever seen in a book. He told the story about Josh Ryan as if he was hearing it while he was writing it. Very, very clever. Darren and Josh meet by chance in a bar and hit if off really well and the next thing you know, Josh is telling this unbelievable story about being abducted by alien women and how they whisk him off to this far away planet. The crazy thing is that the story is very believable. Then, another abduction by some other aliens that have terrible plans for Josh and he is able to fight them off! There’s even a love story built in to boot. It sounds crazy but is very well written in a very clever way. I am getting a little amazed by this writer’s style since this is my second book of his. Highly recommended!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was informative and succinct. Just how I like it. I've always had trouble with my nails. It's been a struggle for a long time. The suggestions in this book make complete sense and am surprised are not more widely known and promoted. I like the fact that the author is not trying to sell or promote any products. She is just telling her own story, that just happens to be a story a lot of us can relate to. I am going to apply the suggestions in this book and report back in a few weeks. The stories, which were contributed by a variety of people, including playworkers, teachers, play scholars, municipal leaders, children, parents, and the author, are a delight to read and instructive of themselves; however, Brown uses the stories to blend theory and research to help make scholarly meaning of them and then consider what this means for playworkers. The book is quite readable and covers a wide range of developmental issues. The last chapter brings everything together through a discussion of compound flexibility, an intriguing concept that underscores the importance of rich play experiences throughout childhood. Although the book is a valuable resource for playworkers, I also recommend it to teachers, administrators, and elected officials who are concerned with optimizing children's lives and the longterm health of our families and communities.
