Complex political plot made personal--female-friendly diverse fantasy!

I'll start by saying this book isn't my usual fare. I generally prefer first-person books or at least books without too many points of view, and this one has like a dozen. On top of that, it's about a war hero who's kind of at the center of his own weird harem anime because he's the king and a bunch of different girls want to marry him, right? Not the kind of thing I usually go for at all. BUT.

J.C. Fann knows what to do to make a story like this personal, believable, intimate, and real. On the surface, it's about a reluctant king who kinda gets pushed into ruling a country even though all he's really good at is war, and about how he's badgered into slowly pursuing marriage even though he'd probably rather nurse his broken heart and bitterness over losing his original fiancée to someone else in an ultimate betrayal. But beneath the surface it's way, way, WAY more. I got really into the characters' individual dramas, diving into their personal worlds, getting invested in their private desires and needs. It's an epic, with history that can be felt, and generations of bad feeling and good alliances that aren't played like thin little violins, but it's still about PEOPLE. You're in good hands with this writer.

Ebreyon Marin, our befuddled king, finds himself having to choose between Arsaya Amalor--a beautiful brat of a girl from Hyrona--and Chanyn Arbreth--an angry, proud woman from Chadarun who doesn't even like him. I love that neither of the girls is madly in love with Ebreyon and they're all well aware that this is more of a political marriage situation, and that despite that he's able to find some common ground with both girls. Arsaya, surprisingly, isn't just a snotty ball of pretense wrapped up in a gorgeous sociopath. She's had her heart broken too, in a way that wounds her to the core, because she wasn't able to get what's come easily to her in every other path in her life--the only thing she ever wanted. And she has this nasty little habit/talent: She can draw. She draws people she hates and destroys the drawings so no one will know. It's sort of incredible. I love weird little quirks like this about characters. Chanyn, for her part, is also sort of a weird ball of rage and way too proud to be someone's prize, and comes off as bratty toward the beginning because she's just so pissed off about everything, but she learns to grow a mature appreciation for her mother's wishes and her own future, finds common ground with Ebreyon, and gains some traction in their relationship (even though some of it is admittedly fueled by wanting to beat Arsaya). It's so intriguing how these two ladies are major characters in a fantasy book but there are aspects of them that could be at home in a YA love triangle (which I mean in the best possible way).

You'll love the other female characters too--so many delightful ladies in a fantasy novel, woohoo!--Selana, the king's sister with different-colored eyes and a protective disposition; Mahalla, a relative of the king who becomes the victim of a horrible plot; Erinya, the king's mother, with her gentle and knowing wisdom; little Tibby, my secret fave, who can kick some butts with a slingshot and is way smarter and more observant than most people expect little girls to be in her world (and she miiight have a teeny crush on the king, even if she's not old enough to be a contender). And of course Rahna. She's probably the closest to a cliché character that the book has--you know, spitfire warrior princess with red hair, a beast on the battlefield and in the sack--but even she's got dimensions, and you haven't heard the last of her when you think you have. As I read along, I developed this weird soap-opera-ish feeling, like "okay, what are these people I know so well going to do next?" It didn't feel orchestrated by some outside planner. It felt honestly conducted by its players. It's a relief to read something of this scope that's written so authentically.

The political stuff went over my head sometimes, but I think Game of Thrones and other epic fantasy fans will eat it up. I could still follow it even though my primary fascination was with the character webs. I occasionally felt like the background history and mythology was heavy and then other times it was so subtle I didn't pick it up, but overall it gelled well enough that I could get the big picture. It does have some very mild fantastical elements, which weren't super obvious upon reading, say, the first half, but that made it especially interesting to me; I should say for the benefit of those wanting recommendations that people who don't like fantasy very much might find this a good stepping stone into reading low and high fantasy epics, since the fantastical stuff isn't front and center. And I personally appreciated the fact that this isn't White People World; it's an explicitly ethnically diverse alternate world that isn't just some Alt-Europe Clone, and I enjoyed how female-friendly it was as well. I'm excited that this is a whole series, because I want to hang out with these people again.

Great, fast paced book!

Really enjoyed reading this book, not my typical genre of books I like but it has a bit of everything in it so I found it really enjoyable! The plot is pretty complex with a number of different characters/storylines and its really fast paced. Kept me wanting to keep reading instead of dragging on like some books I've read. Since there are a lot of characters, I definitely appreciated the character summary at the end of the book that helped me to keep track of everyone - with the strange names it definitely got confusing at times. The end of the book KILLED ME!!!!! and I'm so glad that the second one is out now because cliffhangers just aren't my thing - i have no patience to wait for the next one =P

We meet such pioneers of treatment as the Norwegian microbe hunter, Armauer Hansen. Though Hansen discovered the leprosy bacillus in l873, the 'heredity vs. contagion' debate raged on for decades. Meanwhile, across the world, Belgian Catholic missionary Father Damien became an international celebrity tending to his stricken flock at the Hawaiian settlement of Molokai. He contracted the disease himself. To the British, leprosy posed an "imperial danger" to their sprawling colonial system. In the l920s Sir Leonard Rogers of the Indian Medical Service found that the ancient Hindu treatment of chaulmoogra oil could be used in an injectable form.

The Cajun bayou saw the inspiring rise of leprosy's most zealous campaigner of all: a patient. At Carville, Louisiana, a Jewish Texan pharmacist named Stanley Stein was transformed by leprosy into an eloquent editor and writer. He ultimately became a thorn in the side of the U.S. Public Heath Department and a close friend of Tallulah Bankhead.

The personalities met on this journey are remarkable and their stories unfold against the backgrounds of Norway, Hawaii, the Philippines, Japan, South Africa, Canada, Nigeria, Nepal and Louisiana. Although since the l950s drugs treatments have been able to cure cases caught early—and arrest advanced cases—leprosy remains a subject mired in ignorance.

Indeed, some of the worst offenders have been those charged with caring for the afflicted. Gould says it is the combination of leprosy's mysterious causes and its horrific physical manifestations that inspires such behavior. In this thoughtful book, he traces leprosy's recent history by examining the lives of people who have made a difference, ranging from household names like Father Damien to such lesser-known heroes as Stanley Stein, who waged a victorious battle against the U.S. Public Health Service. Despite what appear to be great strides--the author cites leprosarium closures from declining incidence of the disease in industrialized nations--Gould claims the battle is far from over. A Special Disease

Everyone knows what you mean if you refer to someone as a leper: someone others shun. There are worse diseases, more painful ones, more numerous ones, and many more contagious ones, but leprosy was a horror of its own. This was largely because leprosy was visible; blotchy skin, bloated face, extremities dissolving away. Lepers had more problems in that they lost their sight, but more particularly they lost their sense of touch, and with it the capacity to feel pain, the blessing in disguise that protects us from the world's blows. It is a terrible disease, but the horror it inspired in others made it unique. In _A Disease Apart: Leprosy in the Modern World_ (St. Martin's Press), Tony Gould shows that in the past couple of hundred years, the disease has lost its capacity to shock. It still exists, but there are good treatments and we know that sufferers need not be objects of fear or horror, and that they are certainly not victims of some sort of curse from gods of any type. Gould has not pointedly drawn comparisons to AIDS in our own time, but the similar arc of social reaction to the disease is clear.

Much of what people know about leprosy comes from the Bible, and it certainly inspired the missionaries in their efforts against the disease, but probably those missionaries were fighting a different one than that known in Old Testament times and locales. The involvement of Christianity by means of missionaries to sufferers is a theme throughout this book. One victim himself wrote, "There is no mission to the tubercular, no mission to the diabetics, no mission to syphilitics.... there seems to be some special reward for working with 'lepers'." Such missions are not now fashionable, and we know missionaries are not an unalloyed force for good. Gould has focused in on one region after another to tell histories that all include the cruel management of sufferers and the eventual freeing of them to more enlightened ways. Perhaps the most famous is Father Damien, the Belgian priest who ministered to lepers in Hawaii from 1873 to his death from leprosy in 1889. An American Protestant missionary met him there, and wrote a private posthumous letter critical of Father Damien ("He was not a pure man in his relations with women, and the leprosy of which he died should be attributed to his vices and carelessness.") which the recipient published. Damien's cause was taken up by another previous visitor to Molokai, none other than Robert Louis Stevenson. The controversy only swelled interest in the colony and made Damien a martyr and a figurehead for fundraising.

Leper colonies were not only in far away, impoverished places full of people with dark skin. The American version was in a lovely place, if a little swampy, called Carville, Louisiana. Huge oaks, songbirds, and gorgeous flowering trees made it a place of inspiring natural beauty. "It should have been a tonic to the soul. Except that we were fenced in." So wrote Stanley Stein, a Jewish pharmacist from Texas who edited the patients' publication _The Star_. He was the bane of the U.S. Public Health Service, always campaigning in a spirited American fashion for more rights. The campaign worked, as gradually patients were allowed more time on the outside, and the fences that had held them were taken down. Stein became a star himself, touring the country and hobnobbing with the likes of Tallulah Bankhead. He died in 1967, but Carville still exists as does his paper. The facility was formally closed as a leprosarium in 1999, but some with the disease still live there; having been isolated all their lives, they fear trying to live in the outside world, although they could do so with which much less stigma due to Stein's campaign. Gould shows that this has been the pattern in one locale after another as scientific evaluation of leprosy as a disease has shown that it isn't anything more than a disease, and not a very dangerous one at that, especially now. There is a contradiction, though, in that sufferers and healers who insist that it is just a disease are taking away its special status. The special status may have been founded on fear, but take it away and the focus on treatment and rehabilitation may be lost, especially in poor countries with other diseases to fight. It is one of the many paradoxes in an engaging and moving book.

A valuable addition to the history of leprosy in modern history

In A Disease Apart, Tony Gould describes the history of leprosy, also known as Hansen's disease, over the past 200 years, with a focus on the devastating effects of the disease, the often inhumane conditions in which people infected with Mycobacterium leprae were forced to live, and selected missionaries, physicians and especially patients themselves whose efforts led to improved care and living conditions for people afflicted with leprosy worldwide.

Leprosy has been a feared illness since antiquity, due to the havoc it wreaks upon the body. Unlike infections or illnesses that ravage internal organs, such as its closely related cousin tuberculosis, which is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, leprosy preferentially infects cooler parts of the body, particularly as the fingers, toes, eyes, nose and testes. The immune system's response to the infection often leads to an intense inflammatory response, which causes severe damage to the superficial nerves in these areas, leading to peripheral neuropathy. As a result, the afflicted person progressively loses sensation in these areas, which ultimately leads to tissue breakdown, ulceration and bacterial superinfection, followed by the loss of fingers and toes, destruction of the structure of the nose, and, in some cases, blindness.

Leprosy remains the most common infection that leads to disability, and its elimination has proven to be difficult, with nearly 250,000 new cases worldwide annually, including approximately 100 new cases in the United States each year. The prevalence (total number of cases) has declined dramatically, due to the introduction of the antibiotic dapsone in the 1940s, widespread distribution of the BCG vaccine for tuberculosis (which also provides protection against Mycobacterium leprae), free distribution of multidrug therapy to all newly diagnosed patients worldwide, and improved recognition and diagnostic techniques. However, in recent years, the incidence (the number of new cases) has not changed significantly. Leprosy is a disease of poverty, and 90% of cases occur in the poorest regions of Brazil, Madagascar, Mozambique, Tanzania and Nepal, which suffer from poor health care and access to medical resources. One to two million people are permanently disabled by the disease, many of whom continue to suffer from ostracism and inadequate care.

In the pre-antibiotic era, the most successful technique to prevent the spread of leprosy was compulsory segregation of those afflicted with the disease. Due largely to the fear of transmission of the disease to healthy individuals, people infected with leprosy were treated as badly if not worse than criminals: they were housed in the most decrepit settlements, which were often ringed with walls and barbed wires, with no protection from the elements, inadequate food and water, and little if any medical care. Those who sought to leave the leprosariums were hunted down like escaped convicts, and forcibly returned. In some extreme cases, the afflicted were gathered under false pretenses, and shot or burned alive en masse.

Gould thoroughly though repetitively describes the barbarous treatment that people infected with leprosy received in countries throughout the world, which differed little from one country to the next, particularly in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The strongest sections of the book are those in which he recounts the lives of those who sacrificed and dedicated their lives to the improvement of leprosy sufferers, particularly Father Damien, a Roman Catholic priest from Belgium who ministered to the colony of lepers in Molokai, Hawai'i before succumbing to the illness himself; John Ruskin Early, a leprous 'religious fanatic, a bigot, and exhibitionist' who tormented public health and government officials with his 'psychotic' behavior, but who also was instrumental in the creation of the national hospital for leprosy victims in Carville, Louisiana; and Stanley Stein, a long term resident at Carville, whose newspaper and frequent articles about the conditions there led to greater public awareness and government support for the disease and its sufferers.

A Disease Apart is a valuable addition to the history of medicine, which describes past and present challenges to the care of those afflicted with leprosy. Although written for the lay public it would be of most interest to those who have a strong interest in the disease or the individuals who were most influential in the advances made in its treatment.

The Cats Meow indeed

Another good one.

This one has Tess Michaels, a very pretty Tess.

Tess is a whiz with numbers and accounts. She can do it all in her head and its always right. She's also extremely wealthy. Stinking rich by anyones standards. She doesn't have to work but does and gives her paycheck to charity.

Tess gets into work at The Cathouse in Diable, Arizona.

The Cathouse is a most exclusive gentlemens club. She's the bookeeper there. She finds that over twenty one thousand dollars, last night take, is gone. She wonders if her boss, Jack Campbell has come in early and made the deposit himself and forgot to leave her a note?/

Thinking on it she decides can't be because Jack has a memory like an elephant and he would never forget to leave a note.

Her next guess is that they've been robbed. How she has no idea because it takes special codes to open that safe. She calls Jack.

Jack then gets SEALS Inc. involved.

Matt Brooks, former Army Ranger, is the newest member of SEAL's Inc. is tasked with infilitrating The Cathouse to check out those working there.

Once Matt gets a look at Tess, well, he thinks she's just the cats meow.

So begins a very good read.

This one has Matt, Tess, Captain Sterling, Jayden Hawk, Brett, Shadow, the wives, Jack's ex wife and her hubby, theft, a shady guy who's owed money, a couple of fund raisers, SEAL's Inc and Matt and Tess finding love and life.

I loved this book! I am a new huge fan of this series!

The Cat's Meow covered the bases of nearly all of my favorite things in romance genres. I got my hunky Navy SEALs although the hot main character in this novel is an ex- Ranger. I also got a little bit of a psychic element from the guy's wives who can read aura's and see pictures of your thoughts. This adds a huge comedic element to this book. I also got a strong female character with brains! And another biggie is danger. Someone has to be rescued. Don't let any of the above deter you if you hadn't read any of these books before because I hadn't either but I'm fixing that right now by buying the other 4 books in the series. Yes this book was THAT good! We first meet Tess Michaels as she is coming in to work as book keeper, to pick up last nights take and deposit it. Tess has the amazing ability to count numbers in seconds, add totals faster than a calculator and recall any number from any date at any time. Her boss, the owner of the club, was happy to take her on. When she gets to the safe she discovers it has been emptied. Someone has robbed the very lucrative strip club. A call to her boss sets in motion a thief becoming more desperate when he brings in SEALs Inc to investigate.
Matt Brooks the newest member of SEALs Inc investigations fit right in with all the other former Military men, being a former Ranger himself. His first assignment is finding out who robbed the club. He goes undercover as a bouncer and no one at the club other than the owner knows who he is, not even Tess. When Matt first lays eyes on Tess he wants her. He ends up saying incredibly stupid things and can't seem to stop, but she lets him get away with it because he was honest. And unbeknownst to him she is wrestling with her own libido. They get together for coffee and budding relationship is begun... but she doesn't know who he really is.
When the club is hit again and all the evidence is pointing at Tess red flags are going up all over the place. Why would she need to steal from the club when she comes from an extremely wealthy family and she has an unbelievable wealth of her own. This also raises more questions that need to be answered. Making it even harder for another theft things begin to heat up. Matt and Tess are also making this hot as they explore their attraction amongst all this chaos. Not everyone is what they seem. Can they be caught before someone gets hurt?
What I loved most about this book was that Tess and Matt didn't jump into bed immediately and they didn't fall in love easily. It was it was not love at first sight, they both had to work for it. This book makes a great stand alone and if you never read the other 4 books in the SEALs Inc series this will make you buy them just so you can read how Hawke and Rachel, Max and Cameron, Holly and Brett and Claire and Shadow fell in love. You get a little snippet in this book that makes you NEED to read their stories. They are all so funny reading the wives talking about them. You will want to go back and catch up just like I am doing! You don't get lost for not reading them that is the best part. The only thing I hated about this book was that it ended. I absolutely loved it and I can't wait for another book in this series. I want to find out how every one is. This is a book I will recommend.

One hot mess read, with wonderful characters you will just love.

This was a very enjoyable read, that does keep you guessing as to who the bad person is. It starts off with a bang and ends with one. This is the 2nd book I have read my Mia Dymond and it will not be the last. She knows how to write a story that will keep you interested why keeping the excitement going. With names like The Cat’s Meow and Cathouse I thought this would be more of a sex book. Oh there is passion but there is no trash at all. It is just a wonderful read about two people falling in love why trying to find out who took the money. You will find some wonderful character here with outstanding leading ones.

Tess is wealthy and doesn’t need money but she does the books on the side for the Cathouse. Her adding up numbers will have you in awwww. Tess is just a sweet loving woman if you weren’t told she had money you wouldn’t know it. She is a down to earth, caring and giving person. The story starts off with Tess going to work and finding all the money in the safe missing. She calls her boss and he brings in his team to investigate. She meets Ranger and sparks fly, he is a hottie with a body to die for.

Ranger is a hot ex seal, he is new to the team and a total mess as in hot mess. He is attracted to Tess from the start. He stays undercover and they have a little head butting when Tess finds out. Ranger is really a sweet man who is very bossy. He has to learn to take a step back and let Tess take the lead some.

Neither is looking for love but the attraction is to strong and with someone out to get Tess, Rangers protective side comes out. The whole team and their wife’s are something else, I had a few laughs and a lot of chuckles. The whole supporting cast is outstanding, from mind reading to emotional reading. This book is packed with action.

I would have liked to know why the person who took the money took it. Yes they needed it but there was never a reason given as to why or how they got into the mess they did. For me it wasn’t enough of problem to down star it. The story has an outstanding plot with wonderful characters. If you are looking for a story with a cute, at times funny read that you don’t have to give a lot of attention to this is the book for you.

I don't want to ruin the book for those who haven't read it but totally awesome. I couldn't put the book down and it went far above the expectations I had for it. Deep personal relationships between characters, very real situations placed upon the characters and outcomes that though can be sad are realistic. The situation between the aliens and humans reminds of a certain time in our own history of world war 2 with the Nazis and the Jewish people. If you're not a big fan of science fiction, I recommend this series to get into it. Anne Ferret is an awesome author and I can't wait until the next book comes out.

And this is just in the sample, mind you. Will SOMEBODY please do something about the quality of e-books? Needless to say, I am not going to buy the book.

Read this!

This is a really enjoyable book. Cody, the main character, moves from adolescence to young adulthood here, trying to figure out who he is - a warrior, a caretaker of others, a young man just enjoying life. He loves and respects women in a way we don't always see, and his love of animals is touching. He also draws on an impressive knowledge of military tactics, strategy, and survival, giving us some insight into just what makes these guys tick. The next book is on my bed table.

Such a great read!! Hard to put down, very engaging and suspenseful! A very interesting take on werewolves. The characters are believable and likable. Would have been five stars, but there are a lot of grammatical errors.

This book is very interesting. It covers all the information you need to start using natural remedies for antibiotic and antiviral purposes. If healing your common ailments with a natural ways instead of unsing chemicals, then this book will very useful. It explains why it's important to use natural ingredients to heal yourself and your family from infections and viruses. It is much easier than I thought. You need to learn what ingredients to use. The author list the natural ingredients that have antibiotic properties and antivirals properties. She does a great job explaining how to use them safely. I especially found the chapter on yogurt as a natural antibiotics very interesting and learned several facts I was not aware of. Best of all there are "recipes" to help you take care of common diseases with natural antibiotics. Great book to read to cure the natural way.

Good short book

I really enjoyed this book and I can't wait to read more and It definitely had a different twist to it. The norm is for someone to go back in time and choose to stay. A knight from Arthurian times is sent forward to Edwardian times. The mixing of cultures is fun to watch. Also there's no chance for the knight to return back to his time which is different. I won't spoil this book for you but I recommend it to anyone it was a very good somewhat short book.

Love Before Honor by Nicole Zoltack is my first read by Zoltack, but it will not be my last. From medieval times to regency romance in one time jump, this book has a really solid story line and delightful characters. It has mystery and intrigue but is basically a timeless love story.

I absolutely loved this novel

I absolutely loved this novel. Time travel , a little of magic , discovering where you really needed to be and the purpose.

Gerald is a knight of the year 1288 and is determined to avenge his love lost life just be thwarted by his loves twin. Gerald take a sip from a chalice offered to him and finds himself somewhere else but meets Lady Vanessa. His number one goal is to find away back or at least its what he thought his goal was.
Lady Vanessa finds a man in amour outside but instead of telling her father she brings him in and tell her parents a wee lie to keep him there. Lady Vanessa has a slight scandal to her name and her parents are desperately seeking a husband for their daughter but Vanessa isn't interested in the ma they chosen Now with Gerald around has she finally found a man she can see herself wedded to?

Nicole did a wonderful job writing this story, its sweet and different then most traditional time travels this is a must to you're collection is you like time travel and watching people discover life lessons with a happy ending.
