Loved it! It was fun following Antares

Loved it! It was fun following Antares; the trouble that falls upon him, how his, and anyone's moral compass would be forced to bend, and his travels in a land with a buried past, filled with people whose relationships are dynamic, and fluid to change at any moment. The story weaved through many unexpected directions, and kept me wanting to read. I look forward to Book 2!

Exciting Characters

The Thief is a fantasy story set in an indeterminate time. It opens with Antares mourning the loss of a parent and the separation of his siblings. It continues to focus on Antares’ journey on his own and the twists and turns of his plot line. We follow Antares as he is forced to learn new skills and coping mechanisms to survive his journey. It is full of surprise characters and new locations with different cultures and people.

I thoroughly enjoyed the story once I got into it. I was confused at the beginning trying to keep the different characters straight because the names were so foreign to me. But by the second chapter I had found a rhythm and I could follow each character as they were mentioned without having to go back and remind myself who was who.

There are some parts of the story when the characters talk in a language foreign to Antares (and to me!). It was a language that appeared to be created for this story. I quickly got bored with these paragraphs as there was little contextual information for me to understand these conversations, and no interpretation from any other characters to compensate. They did little to add to the story and I found myself skimming these sections and moving on to the rest of the story.

The story moved quickly enough to hold my interest but there was also adequate character and plot development. There was decent development of each new culture to help show similarities and differences of the surrounding areas and people that would overlap.

The introduction of magic was a little rough. It had no lead in and then just lingered in the background mostly undiscussed for a few chapters. It did add to the story but seemed a bit choppy.

The author did an excellent job conveying emotions and conflicts without excessive verbiage. I found myself rooting for the good guys and despising the bad guys with ease.

This appears to be the first in a series. Even with the few flaws mentioned, I had a hard time putting it down and I hope to have the opportunity to read the rest of Antares’ story.

It is a thriller. If you like books that has a lot of surprises, then you should really read this book. Cai Prince did an outstanding job with setting and characters. The characters are really well-developed and each one is unique.

American writer, Grenville Kleiser (1868-1953), is best known for his writings on humor, inspiration and positive thinking. Besides Fifteen Thousand Useful Phrases, he authored Model Speeches for Practice, Successful Methods of Public Speaking, The Training of a Public Speaker, and others. Kleiser's Successful Methods of Public Speaking is nearly a century old, but still contains much to recommend it. It can be freely downloaded as an electronic file from Project Gutenberg, or you can buy this paper copy if you like to hold books in your hands.

WHY BOTHER READING ABOUT OLD SPEECHES?
---------------------------------
The speeches themselves contain many powerful argumentative strategies and eloquent turns of phrase. Kleiser's anecdotes about the speakers are inspiring as well. Some Americans are mentioned, but most of the names will be familiar from British history. Here is an example of an anecdote:

Edmund Burke recommended debate as one of the best means for developing
facility and power in public speaking. Himself a master of debate, he
said, "He that wrestles with us strengthens our nerves and sharpens our
skill. Our antagonist is our helper. This amiable conflict with
difficulty obliges us to have an intimate acquaintance with our subject,
and compels us to consider it in all its relations. It will not suffer
us to be superficial." Burke, like all great orators, believed in premeditation, and always wrote and corrected his speeches with fastidious care. While such men knew that inspiration might come at the moment of speaking, they preferred to base their chances of success upon painstaking preparation.

Kleiser also makes substantive comments on the speeches themselves. Here is one example:

John Quincy Adams, in his speech on "The Life and Character of
Lafayette," gives us a fine example of elevated and serious-minded
utterance. The following extract from this speech can be studied with
profit. Particularly note the use of sustained sentences, and the happy
collocation of words. The concluding paragraph should be closely
examined as a study in impressive climax.

This book is an inexpensive way to get a hold of a great piece of scholarship. Let's face it. Unless you have a Kindle or other such device, you probably won't actually read through the electronic version on your computer screen.

Oh wow, what a great guide! Being in debt make us often feel helpless, and Ashton Pereira’s 9 step system is very practical, clear to follow and it gives you a great mindset that will help you to take action and find your way out of debt. Plus, it comes with a lot of bonus tips how to making money on the side (and who doesn't want to make a few extra bucks?). So, if you’re struggling to get out of debt, this little book here is definitely a recommendation!

This book is very timely and mandatory reading for those planning to go to college or anyone considering getting their first credit card. The author stress the importance of financial educations then lays out an action plan to confront debt and get rid of it. Many of the points suggested are sound, "you should already know that" ideas. But others are surprisingly simple ideas to use the changing landscape of the internet economy in your favor.

Fabulous addition to this series!

This is about Mary’s mother and her sister. I went back after reading the last book and found TWO novellas and was so excited because I cannot get enough of this series. This is one of the novellas and is filled with as much creepiness and maybe even a bit more horror than the books!

In this Isabel is writing to her sister to explain that even after all of these quite horrifying events, she does not hold any ill will. I was curious how the book was going to progress as just a letter but progress it did! It moved quite fast and I was able to understand both stories even though this is clearly a first person view.

This clears up quite a bit for the last book and explains just why Mary’s mother, Susan, is so straight laced. It’s only 41 pages but someone Sarah Dalton was able to pack them full of horror! The only question I still have is if this is all done by ghosts or a demon? I guess the answer doesn’t really matter when you’re going through this horrendous stuff, but it has left me curious. I cannot wait for the next book in this series!

Talystasia is a faertyale, a story of redemption in the private lives of our heroes as they battle for meaning,common ground, catharsis, order and love.But it is not a lighthearted one, and it's not an escapist fantasy.  These are violent, compromised people, who struggle daily with questions of integrity and whose souls hang in the balance.  Their lives are rife with pain,helplessness, weakness, loss, abuse, abandonment, rage, and hopelessness.  I have, by proxy and from afar, shared in some of their agony.  But I have also shared in some of their salvation, and I have written every word in thanks to each of them for the grace they have given me.  

I hope that they will help you to navigate your own dark way to grace and transcendence.

Great starting line

A Dark Fantasy for adults...Great starting line. This book is a start to another world of what some of us think days gone by have been. It is not. From the opening chapter to the ending, which leads us to believe there is more coming, this book tells a tale of oncoming madness, a slave who cares about her master and a princess, forced to grow up before her time. The mysterious man who saves a life to a growing rebellion that is going to happen unless opposites really attract. This is the first of a series that has started out leaving a reader wondering what is going to happen next...a book well worth the time to read. This is not a book for children, but adults who like to live...in a past future.

Dahn is a cool professional soldier who, though charmed by life in the limelight, wishes for a return to true civilian rule devoid of military men who have exchanged their uniforms for suits. In the clash between the two, Dahn is forced to flee Liberia. Finding himself in involuntary exile, Dahn becomes obsessed with removing Forkpa, his archrival, from power in an aggressive manner. This sets the stage for a violent conflict which will drag the two men and their nation down into the abyss of anarchy.
