The nature of signs is to represent something greater than themselves. In this book you will find that signs are the gateway for the stories of the businesses and the people who lived, worked, and sometimes sought safe haven, behind them. Examples like the Universal Life Insurance Company, during the time of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s, assassination, or the Lorraine Motel for Stax recording artists, or even the great Sam Phillips, whose desire for creative change started Sam Phillips Recording Studio. Each chapter offers a glimpse into various slices of life across time and geography. The people who interacted with what the signs symbolize are interesting and important both socially and historically.

One of the most recognizable signs in this book, the Sputnik at Joe's Liquors, represents the creative vision of a quiet inventor, hardly known to the world, who gifted us with spectacular road signs across the country. The Sputnik also represents how a community will rally around something it loves to restore it to a former glory. While interesting, the engineering specs of the Sputnik do not tell anything about the sign's true importance because a sign is a reflection of something more important than itself.

The history concerning most of these places is discovered exclusively in the stories people tell. About the Author
Caitlin L. Horton received a BA in International Studies and French and an MA in French at the University of Mississippi. Like the blues, she came from the Delta to make a home in Memphis. Unexpected History of Memphis - walking tour desired

I am reading this book now and really enjoying it. I am not from Memphis but it makes me wish I could do a walking tour of all the sites and signs - and I will do that when I visit this summer. There's a handy map near the end of the book. I am Caitlin's mother-in-law so might be some biased but think anyone interested in Memphis would enjoy.

Memphis couldn't be more proud of having it's history and eccentric side highlighted as well as Memphis Type History has done it. The first segment alone about the monumental achievements of Universal Life Health Insurance are worth the investment. A fascinating read for any fan of type, style, Memphis, and/or history.

Memphis History - Fun and Informative. An absolute winner!

Although I live in the UK, I travel to Memphis regularly for my job, and consider it a bit of a second residence. I probably know it well geographically as my own hometown too. I've read dozens of books on the history of this fine city but have to say that this ranks as perhaps one of the best. I know it’s a cliché, but it really was quite hard to put down once I started reading. Fun, informative - it’s a truly compelling read. Full of detail and history but in a way that doesn’t make it staid but keeps it fresh and interesting with not only the historical facts but the viewpoints from local residents too. This gives it a nice edge where you’re not being lectured, but it makes it personal and relaxed. As they say if you want to find out about somewhere don't read a guide book - talk to the locals, and this is the next best thing! Of all the books I read on Memphis, without doubt, I’ve enjoyed this one the most and found it the most fun and captivating.

I love the use of the illustrations (which is truly amazing) and the photos used as well. They really capture the unique essence of the city, they’re not of the most ‘glamorous’ sights but they show the ‘rough around the edges’ beauty of the city which make it stand out from anywhere else. After spending so much time researching, plus all the trips I’ve made, I really thought I knew Memphis – but I picked up so much new information from reading this. It’s been a real schooling
If you want to know more about the people, stories and history of this fabulous city nestled on the shores of the mighty Mississippi then you can't go far wrong with this great little book. Highly recommend!

The Making of the Lamb is the first major novel to come along in about fifty years to really take an out-of-the-box look at who Jesus really was. Whenever I talk to people who have read my book I discover that each one finds something unique and personal to take away from it. This is borne out by the reader reviews on this page. While the story is lively and fast-moving, it is also incredibly thought provoking. It appeals to people of all stripes, including Christians of every denomination, atheists, Jews, modern day Druids, the spiritual-but-not-religious, and any other spiritual persuasion I can think of.

This book was about ten years in the research and writing. I am grateful for the recognition the book has received in the trade reviews and at the Illumination Awards where it took the gold medal in the General Fiction category. But the response from my readers is what really makes it all worthwhile for me.

About the Author
Since 2004, Robert Harley Bear has pursued studies in all areas surrounding the legend that Jesus came to Britain during his formative years. His research subjects included archaeology of the late Iron Age in Britain, writings about druids from Irish legends to the annals of Julius Caesar, biblical history, Roman history, and all of the legends of the missing years of Jesus Christ, including those that take Jesus to the Far East. The author began his professional career as an attorney. He retired from active practice in 1998 and took on his current IT day job. In 2005, he was baptized at St. Paul’s Parish, K Street, in Washington, DC, where he remains an active parishioner to this day. He enjoys competitive sailboat racing, skiing, and bike riding. He frequently competes with his Albacore in numerous venues where Albacores are raced in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. In 2011 he won the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association High Point trophy for the Albacore Class.

Wonderful Fusion of multiple traditions

This book brings together in one elegantly told story history, legend, The Bible, theology, and pure and delightfully imaginative fiction. Some of the threads I had been exposed to, but the way they all fit into Robert Bear's narrative made it a pleasure to read and hard to put down. If you've ever wondered what was happening to Jesus between the ages of 12 and 18, this is a good place to find a totally plausible scenario peopled by some familiar Biblical folks in totally new situations. But more than that, there is real depth here in the struggles Jesus and others go through in trying to understand what his true nature was and how his future would unfold. There is plenty here to challenge any reader to examine his or her own life as well.

I have enjoyed the book so much that I ordered a hardback copy to put permanently into my library. I would highly recommend this book and have several people that I plan to recommend the book to. The story seems possible and the exploration of theology is quite good. I would certainly like to learn more about the traditions upon which this book is based. Enjoy.

Intriguing Take on the Missing Years in the Life of Jesus

Almost nothing is known about Christ's life between the age of 2 and when he began his public preaching at age 30, except for one incident when he was 12 years old and visited the Temple in Jerusalem.

Many legends have appeared to fill in the 18 year gap between the ages of 12 and 30.

I had vaguely heard of legends stating that St. Joseph of Arimathea, who donated his own tomb for Christ's burial after the crucifixion, had visited England. I had also heard that he was the first custodian of the Holy Grail, the cup from which Christ drank at the Last Supper.

The author of this book has taken these legends and created an interesting novel. In his telling, Joseph of Arimathea, a rich merchant, is the uncle of Christ's mother, Mary. After Christ gets in trouble with the Temple authorities at age 12, Mary asks Joseph, whose trading voyages reach as far as Britain, to take Jesus away from Galilee. Joseph agrees, and Jesus travels with Joseph of Arimathea and Joseph's teenage son, to England, Cornwall and many other Celtic locations.

The interaction between these three Jews, the pagan Romans and Greeks, and the Celtic tribes is fascinating. For example, Jesus encounters Druids, the priests of the Celtic gods. I also found it interesting to read how Jesus gradually becomes aware of his future mission as the Messiah, and his connection with God.

The book did have chapters with very interesting "flash forwards" to later eras, such as the 17th century English Civil Wars and the Victorian era, where information left behind by St. Joseph of Arimathea is preserved in a British church. The "flash forwards" were well-researched but did kind of break up the novel's narrative flow sometimes.

I also had some trouble with the book's portrayal of the teenage Jesus, as sometimes he seemed like a normal teenager, and other times like the Son of God. Christ was supposed to have lived a sinless life, but the teenage Jesus is -- well -- a teenager -- some of his words and actions seemed definitely in the "sinful" category.

You may disagree with some of the author's ideas, but you won't be bored.

Tristan and Adam are hot!

This was the shortest ending to a great story. It needed more details. I felt like this could have been put in the 4th book. Love the storyline, but wish there was more of it to have been the ending.

About the Author
Michele Paige Holmes spent her childhood and youth in Arizona and northern California, often curled up with a good book instead of out enjoying the sunshine. She graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in Elementary Education, and found it an excellent major in which to indulge her love of children's literature. Her first novel, Counting Stars (Covenant Communications 2007), won the 2007 Whitney Award for best romance. Her companion novel, a romantic suspense titled, All the Stars in Heaven (Covenant 2009), was a Whitney finalist, as was her first historical romance, Captive Heart (Covenant 2011). My Lucky Stars (Covenant 2012) completed the Stars series. In 2014 she launched the Hearthfire Historical Romance series with Saving Grace. A little too gloomy for me!

This is a Victorian romance set in Yorkshire, England, in 1827. Grace, the granddaughter of the late Duke of Salisbury, has had a difficult life so far. She has recently been through a number of suitors arranged by her father, who sees Grace as a means to get himself out of gambling debts and support his degenerate lifestyle. Grace is cooperating only to protect her younger sister, Helen, from the same fate, but she has somehow managed to make herself unsuitable to all of the suitors so far. The most recent suitor is just unbearable, and Grace decides to run away. Her destination is Mr. Preston, the next suitor on the list, but before she can arrive at Preston Manor, her carriage runs off the road during a storm. Cold and soaked to the bone, she is forced to seek refuge at the first home they can find. Lord Sutherland is not at home when Grace and her servants arrive at his estate later that night. He is not expected home for several days, so the butler makes the decision to take her in and offer Grace and her staff shelter. Unfortunately, Nicholas Sutherland returns that same night. He climbs into bed only to discover Grace is already there! She is ruined! And sick as well.
Grace is thrown into a difficult feud between Lord Sutherland and his neighbor, Mr. Preston (who turns out to be a very suitable suitor for Grace). Her struggles while illness confines her to Lord Sutherland's estate are overwhelming, and her future seems to be doomed...
While I found the story to be well written, and the characters engaging, this was not really the feel good romance I was looking for, and it seemed to drag on and on for me. I think you would have to be in the right mood to appreciate this book, and for that reason, I only gave it three stars. I don't believe I would recommend it to others.

Oh my goodness, this book is perfect. I loved it! The characters are brilliant and enjoyable. I loved Grace in an instant. What she does at the beginning of the book to get herself out of a bad situation, had me liking her from the start. She is in an impossible situation, put there by her father's stupidity and heartlessness. I admit I was nervous about Grace's scheme at first, but I enjoyed how events unfolded and I loved the end result. For a little bit, I was torn between who she should end up with, but during the course of the book, and getting to know the characters, there was a clear winner. Grace puts herself in a tough situation and didn't think initially about what could transpire. Not only to her, but everyone around her. Nicholas reminded me of the beast from Beauty and the Beast. He needed his tough, strong-willed heart softened and Grace worked her way into it. She had a way of doing that with everyone she came in contact with. Grace's genuine demeanor and kindness were my favorite things about her.

5 out of 5 stars. This is an excellent, clean romance that will have you quickly turning pages. I have always enjoyed Michele's books, but I have to say, this one is my favorite.

Sweet, Engaging and Empowering

I love this book! It is one of the best I've read in a while. In the beginning our leading lady, Grace, hilariously throws herself into schemes to avoid being married off by her father to the worst kind of men. She is even willing to ruin her reputation to protect what is most important to her, her siblings. Right when Grace thinks she’s secured her family’s freedom from her self-serving father, she finds herself entangled in a scandalous love triangle between two enemies. Now with two vying suitors, is spinsterhood still what she really wants? Can she protect her siblings from her father and have love? Or will she also need to protect her heart? Grace is strong and bold and will not step down from a challenge. But the prickles and problems of others will only be soothed and worn down by her honesty and love.

This book is well written, engaged my emotions and made me identify with the kinder and more loving parts of myself. While inspired by the faults and growth of all the characters, this story left me wanting to become gentler, more thankful and more forgiving. Saving Grace is truly a fun, unpredictable, clean romance book with a plot that twists and tangles then pricks and snags your heart until it blooms into a sweet and beautiful love.

About the Author
Thomas P. Warren is a financial management expert currently working and living in Washington, D.C. Previously Mr. Warren was employed by a major wealth management firm in the New York Metro area as a Certified Financial Planner(c). Mr. Warren's early career was with Merrill Lynch and Co. in New York City where he held several managerial positions in finance and information technology. Mr. Warren also worked as a consultant on information technology to companies and organizations in the financial services industry. In 2008 he founded Y Squared Advisors, LLC to provide unique, specialized services to individuals and small businesses. Mr. Warren has published several online articles on the subject of personal financial management. Born Bankrupt is his first book. Mr. Warren earned an MBA in International Finance from New York University and an undergraduate degree in business administration from the State University of New York. Mr. Warren enjoys reading, boating, skiing, and winning at cards and investing. He gardens and makes mean barbecue in his Vienna, Virginia backyard. He has two children - Laura and Gregory - who reside in the New York City metro area.

About the Author
David G. Johnson is an author and teacher with a BA in Asian Studies and an MDiv in Biblical Languages. He currently resides overseas with his family serving as teachers and living witnesses of their faith. He has been an avid fantasy and science fiction fan for over thirty years. Johnson has now turned his cross-cultural experience to the task of blending fantasy fiction with a biblical worldview. A Satisfying Preview to the Chadash Chronicles

This has recently been revised and reformatted with added content, including a new cover. One of the main characters from the Chadash Chronicles is introduced as a young boy to strengthen the bridge between this preview and the Chronicles. This gives valuable insight into this characters involvement in the Chronicles. This preview of the Qarahni people is very effective being told by a Lorefather to an upcoming generation who need to hear about the history of their people.

Johnson portrays the Lorefather as one who loves children, loves his people and their heritage. This forms a great backbone to this short. In this revised edition, the Lorefather's character has been expanded and this makes him more relational and adds depth to the preview and history of the Qarahni people. Having read both the original edition and now this revision one, this one reads and flows better and is much more enjoyable. The change in writing format adds a greater depth to this preview.

Johnson has explained with passion what happened in their heritage that divided this unified race really well and I can see that this will aid the reader in understanding and appreciating the Chadash Chronicles.

There is also depth to this heritage and you can see that he has been influenced by other sources. Johnson likes attention to detail and structure in his plot and characters and I found this to be a great strength.

This revised short gives a very good introduction to the Chadesh Chronicles and is very effective as a short standalone story if it needed to be but, I am glad it is not!

The Everking's Mytho-Historical Tale Told Swiftly and Engagingly. Get past the framing narrative and you will be HOOKED.

4.5 stars. For fans of fables, hero tales, legends, and myths. An engrossing and fast-paced (once it gets going) novella to introduce readers to the world of Chadash, which is the setting of a trilogy by the author.

Okay, what we have here is a novella that is a framed story: a fantasy world's Grand Lorefather is teaching a class and retells the tale of their civilization's historical past. The main part of the novella is a mytho-historical account of a great past king who ends up leaving a legacy of a divided and damaged family and divided and damaged kingdom as a result of choosing unwisely how to acquire an heir. It's dense and --with minor bobbles in diction and syntax here and there, very few--it's a page-turner I was totally engrossed in the story of the Everking (the name ends up ironic) and how he finds the wrong solution in forbidden magic to a common problem of infertility. His children and kingdom pay the price (as does he in many ways).

This could easily have been a longer work, a novel, as it has enough characters and conflict in the Everking's tale. The author uses a voice that at first, in the opening pages, threatened to be overly "prose-y"--slightl purpley--but he reigns himself in as we go along and, by the time he tells the Everking's history (with few bobbles in diction, as I mentioned), we have a smoothly, richly, engagingly told legend with nobles, warriors, wraiths, shamans and shamanesses, curses, conflicts, and assorted creatures roaming with various goals and hungers.

This short work succeeds in its purpose: It makes me want to read on to find out more of this world and its peoples.

Note: After the tale is told, there is an afterword with a personal testimony by the author, who is a Christian.

I really enjoyed reading this story! I can hardly wait for the books to come out in a few months. What a delightful storyline and the characters are just wonderfully alive in one's mind! Great story David! Keep up the writing!
