At the High Museum of Art in Atlanta there is an exhibit of the retrospective work by Wifredo Lam that runs through May 24, 2015. In a companion catalogue, Wifredo Lam: Imagining New World edited by Elizabeth T. Goizueta, is full of detailed back ground of this Afro-cuban artist. This book was pubiced to accompany the exhibit and is full of contributions by experts in varying disciplines.
Born to a Afro-Cuban mother and a Chinese Father, Wifredo was influenced by the modernism in the 20 centuries and his travels to Paris and around the world enabled him to create his style. He also was widely influenced by the Nègritude movement. His signature work is a blend of contemporary themes and touches on the inner aspect of religion, surrealism, and intimate relationships.
The exhibit has examples of his significant works. The book is more than a collection of scholarly reviews but also beautifully illustrated in color where the viewer can take a closer look at his work. His paintings contain a wide range of iconography and reflect the changes of his world.

Excellently written children’s book!

I took this with me to my daughters’ house and read it with my 3 grandchildren ranging in age from 2 to 10 and all 3 of them loved it. They thought the story was fantastic as 2 of them had just returned to school recently after summer break and they both come home everyday and tell their little brother all about it, just like Wiley does with Moxy. The 2 year old loved the pictures and the sound of my voice, OF COURSE.

I would highly recommend this wonderful book to parents with children of all ages.

Thank you Angela for giving me a wonderful time with my Grandkids.

School can be Fun !!!!!

I read this book to my daughter. We thoroughly enjoyed the pictures and the story line. Wiley the Rabbit loves school and tells his friend Moxy all the great and wonderful things she does at school. Hint: There is a big surprise at the end. I recommend this book to parents who want to give their children a glimpse of all the fun things they can do at school. Great theme. Great Pictures. Great story. Give it 5 stars.

This is a really cute book that your kids would really love because of the twist ending. It describes how fun school can be with all the different activities and also has funny humor in it as well. Our five and six-year-old loved it and
really laughed hard at the end!

Another Ann Hunter Masterpiece!

For the third time this year, Ann Hunter has produced a masterpiece: this time in her twisted retelling of the “frog and the princess” in Fallen.
Fallen is the bow that wraps up the package that Ann started in The Subtle Beauty and wrapped ever so delicately with Moonlight. Fallen tells the tales of Sylas Mortas and Ros, the chicken who thinks she is more than that.
The tale opens with Sylas running off to avoid being subject to an arranged marriage. Along the way, he falls for a beautiful robber who takes him prisoner and demands that he return to the king for ransom. Reluctantly, Sylas agrees and goes back, dejected that he has lost “the love of his life.”
Once back at the castle, Sylas demands that he be given a chance to find “the love” instead of being forced into a live of loveless marriage, as he supposed that the arranged marriage would be. Reluctantly, the father agrees and gives him until the next holiday to find her or be forced into the marriage.
The holiday comes and there is no sign of the robber. Sylas resigns himself to the future, only to find out that the marriage was arranged to the robber, who was secretly a princess from another region. He happily looks forward to the wedding after finding out this revelation.
The first twist of the book happens when Sylas’ grandfather is faced by a witch. Without giving away too much, Sylas takes his grandfather’s place, and this is a twist that causes ripples thru the rest of the book, even leading to who dies.
After the witch takes Sylas he begins to learn magic, and this is the part of the book that ties in to the other two books of Ann’s writing, as she explains how things were from Sylas’ perspective.
I mentioned Ros, as the chicken who thought she is more than that. Her story is intermingled throughout the book, and she helps to keep Sylas human during much of his tutelage under the witch, and it makes for entertaining backstory. I have heard there is to be a separate story of Ros coming out, and I thoroughly look forward to its unveiling.
As is the case with all of Ann’s writing, this book sucks you in from the first page and you do not want to put it down. It is a story of morality and mortality, death and life, and how choices affect not just your life, but others around you. It is definitely worth your money to pick up this book and it would make another good bedtime story to read to your children.

I have fallen hard for FALLEN!

Holy crazy chickens! I hardly know where to even start!

First off, fellow readers--if you have NOT read Moonlight or The Subtle Beauty---DO NOT READ FALLEN YET!!! In order to fully appreciate THIS book, you NEED to read the other 2 first. Seriously, not kidding!

Ann Hunter has an imagination the knows no boundaries. You can take every Grimm Fairy tale, a few nursery rhymes, and the movie Labyrinth all thrown into a pot to jumble up. The outcome of that MIGHT be close to what Fallen is. Sylas Mortas, the emotional roller coaster that character has put me through during these tales is just....GAH!! I hate him, then I admire him, laugh with him, then adore him, end up back to hating with a touch of loathe approaching. Pity....oh my gosh the pity is heavy! Crwys....no liking for that one period! I wanted to reach through the words and smack her so many times. I mean she IS a Witch, but I was still thinking "Gah, what a nasty witch!". I learned to understand her some as the book went on, but never reached a point where I said 'I like her' as I did with Sylas.

Despite the engaging make-believe of this tale, there is a very serious side as well. It is like the folk tales of old, in which the purpose of telling was to teach a lesson. There are so many possible lessons approached within the Crowns of the Twelve series, that by the end you are left uncertain WHO they are truly for or WHAT was even learned. At times it felt there was so much happening and so quickly that it seemed to blur by. Which may have been intentional by the author, as real life CAN seem to be a blur at times.

Plus there is the chicken...many times of saying to myself 'What is with this chicken?' 'Why the chicken again?'. I grew to LOVE the chicken. She had me laughing and then crying.

Thank you Ms. Hunter for such a wonderfully exciting tale! I highly recommend this book, er, the whole series actually! :)

I was completely blown away by this amazing book!

Wow! I was really blown away by this wonderful book! This is definitely Ann Hunter's best one yet. I was completely captivated and found it extremely hard to put this book down. I absolutely love how this story ties in neatly with The Subtle Beauty and Moonlight. I found Sylas's story completely intriguing and my heart really felt for him and his touching story. I though he was some cold monster in the first two books and was pleasantly surprised to find out how....human he was and all of his heartrending trials. The writing was excellent, the descriptions were realistic and the storyline was believable. I thoroughly enjoyed Fallen from start to finish and am eagerly anticipating reading some more of Ann Hunter's books!

Like a series of snapshots from the frontlines of praxis

Essential, rewarding, inspiring. For anyone interested in the intersection between art and politics, both as a theoretical problem and practical struggle, and equally aimed for those who have been, are, or are thinking to enter into public life at one scale or another.

The book collects texts - open letters, essays, talks, missives, manifestos and polemics - over twenty odd years with the key themes being the successful establishment of Neighborhood Councils in Los Angeles and the connection of poetry and politics. Like a series of snapshots from the frontlines of praxis, each text emerged from/for a specific occasion, and together they form an evolving argument and insight, with fantastic introductions to each chapter weaving the fragments into a whole.

Dewey's approach is equally at home with Abe Lincoln and Jean Baudrillard, drawing especially on a novel and compelling reading of Hannah Arendt and her over-looked republicanism. Both practical and theoretical, Dewey writes in the "public-intellectual" tradition of Arendt and Chomsky, producing an at times dense and challenging style but one that is highly personal, ultimately accessible and generous, aimed for the thinking citizen.

For anyone who's been battered by the system or burned out in attempts to effect change, or who sees art and politics as essentially linked, this book will offer real gems, practical tips, inspiration, solace.
