They say you can't judge a book by its cover. Well, 'Secrets of the White Lake' may be the exception. The cover is striking, and what follows doesn't disappoint. It's a real-page-turner that will appeal to young adults and older readers alike. Although not this reader's preferred genre or usual reading fare, book one in 'Wind Shadow Chronicles' left me wanting more. Without a doubt, it is a superb introduction to the series and I'm looking forward to book two. All in all...a superior fantasy/sci-fi novel.                                       -Sterling Gate Books

I strongly recommend this book to anyone who enjoy reading a fantasy/science fiction novel. Although my primary readers were young adults, I've also received many positive feedbacks from grownups.

About the Author
How I got the crazy ideal to write.
In 1986, when my son was four years old, I had created a flimsy sketchbook, My Dear Old Bed for his birthday. I had no idea how much it had meant to him until November 1st, 2004, when the subject of the sketchbook came up again. Come to find out, he'd kept it in his safekeeping for the last eighteen years. And so on his 23rd birthday, I made a promise to my son. And that promise was to turn that flimsy sketchbook into a real book. I had plans to create a book for my daughter too. Then I thought it would make more sense to combine both books together. I would draw on my memories from all the nighttime stories that I had told them when they were toddlers to create the book. 

As a graphic designer / illustrator, a picture book was what I had intended. It would be a true picture book with no words. But fate is a funny thing; halfway through the project I realized--I wasn't able to finish the book without words, so I started to write, I had given myself a week to complete the project. Little did I know, the journey would take me a lot longer than I had anticipated, on January 2014 Secrets of the White Lake (the first book) was finally completed.

Exciting and fascinating so far...

Where I am now (halfway) this book is a very easy, fast and exciting read. Lots of imagination, intense action and far out fantasy being incorporated into a very warm story about love, friendship, and family. I'm picking up a lot of themes about spirituality and the afterlife as well as about mankind's own self destructive nature plunging us into a post apocalyptic state with some crazy creatures, nutty sci-fi technology and strange people running about, plus we also have some mysterious lifeforms up in the neon coloured sky to deal with, that could be aliens or some higher existence! (Lots of Wow here!) So some serious and crazy questions are being asked here as well as some edge of seat dangers to overcome - so it seems there's much more excitement to be discovered which gives this story a real furious urge to be read. This has been one fascinating and incredibly enjoyable book so far as such intriguing and important, sacred questions are being discussed along with adrenalin fuelled confrontations, but all this wrapped up in a story about innocence (the 2 main characters), and everything is so simply and straightforwardly written that it doesn't make your head work too hard to understand some challenging subject matters or some imaginative fantasy action. I can't wait to see what happens on the next 10 or so pages, let alone what happens at the end. This is a real fast page turner so far. If the rest of the book holds up then it's well worth a read for anyone else, because the novel deals with questions that we all ask ourselves about this world we live in, along with scenes of eye popping wonder and exhilerating encounters, but as everything is described in such a simple to understand way, I think adults and children will get an equal kick out of it. So far, I think this is a book you should check out.

I do not read many Sci-Fi books but this one was recommended from a family memeber. Thoroughly enjoyed this book. The attention to detail in the characters, the scenes and the outcomes was amazing. If all Sci-Fi books are written this well I might read more of them. Good read!

Enjoyable!

I was unusually suprised by this book. The plot begins kind of slow but quickly gains momentum as the reader learns more and more about the world the two main brother and sister characters are living in. For a post-apocalyptic novel, it is very believable. I liked how the to main characters were part of an Indian tribe, and Miya's special gift only adds to the mysteriousness of the story. Mr. Chong is a very imaginative writer, and his descriptions of the forest and mountains really made me feel like I was there. By the end of the book, I was truly involved in the characters and what was happening to them. I'd recommend this book to anyone likes action adventure/sci fi.

As most of this story is told through Richard the historian's voice, the reader is kept in the dark about things that Richard does not know about, or is trying to find out about, which adds to the tension. More pieces of the puzzle, however, are starting to fall into place.

I found this book an absolute page turner! New characters are introduced, lots of exciting stuff happening - no spoiler alert, I'm afraid; you'll have to read the books!

As the battle for earth continues, the protogaonist of the Bloodline series embarks on a journey to find the Rhymer. Will he be the key to winning the war against Skye? Book 3 is the shortest of the series thus far but it's packed with tension from the moment Ulysses and Dagmar say their goodbyes in a brief erotic moment. Van der Leek's instincts on how to develop his characters piece by piece is impressive to say the least. At the time I read this book, I hadn't slept in almost 24 hours (due to travel) but refused to put it down. The first thing I did today when I had a moment to myself was peek at the beginning of book 4 just to see how it started. Get these books! This journey is not only exciting, but the inspiring notes about our humanity are good for your soul.

R. D. Petti is a mystic, poet, and debut author with a BA in English Literature and an MA in Counseling Psychology. She has worked abroad as an editor, among other things. She has served as a mental health counselor and hospice volunteer. She delved into the field of death and dying during her parents' transitions. Through her experiences and knowledge gained, she has become passionate in her desire to shed a more tranquil light on this subject, still very much tabooed in the Western world. She practices Reiki and Pranic Healing and is a Deeksha blessing giver. Ms. Petti is also a student of the Monroe Institute, which promotes the exploration of consciousness through hemi-sync technology. She currently resides in Sarasota, Florida. Nettie’s Tea House is a quirky, thoroughly entrancing, and touching philosophic tale about the hereafter. R.D. Petti poignantly creates a new realm to help us mere mortals delve into the afterlife, so that we should not fear what may happen in our inevitable future. This book is an original and a must read.

Creative and Unique Look at the Afterlife

This is a beautifully written "what if this is real" tale of the afterlife.

The book touches on many of life's lessons -- and failures we are doomed to repeat unless we get to the root of unhappiness, bitterness, self-loathing and feelings of unworthiness in our own lives. But this is not the same old thing you are used to reading. Nettie’s Tea Room is a creative purgatory, of sorts, where souls who have departed their previous realms, are gathered to rid themselves of negativity and to await their future destinations.

The author's characters are well developed; her use of imagery is amazing. (And she made me want to get out my tea kettle.) This is certainly an original piece of fiction.

While my own personal beliefs in JESUS being the King of the Universe are firmly in place, the author, through her strong use of imagery AND employing all of the senses, shows me how very many of the same lessons we all need to learn. While I do not believe in reincarnation, this is quite a uniquely written work of fiction. I absolutely loved it.

This book evokes memories of The Shack, The Screwtape Letters (in the OOPS portions), Pilgrim’s Progress, characters in Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar, and scenes from Defending Your Life (Meryl Streep); not to mention so many true-isms it would make Tony Robbins proud! Yes, this was one well-written book.

The bar only rises to the level of our own expectations -- and those expectations can serve as our own limiting paralysis - or as our own healers. I have often said, "...once the beast rears its head, where then can it hide?!" Expose the beast for its lies and deliberate attempts to monkey-wrench your life and then laugh right out loud.

As for me, reading this book was a joyful experience that perhaps allowed a peek inside the head of its now oh-so-joyful author, R. D. Petti. Writing, indeed, frees the soul.

This is one of the most delightful, well written and imaginative books I've ever read. The storyline is awesome and the messages are very clear, but cloaked in the authors wonderfully developed characters. I hope this hits the best sellers list because it belongs there. The writer is a true genius and her use of words paints pictures that will take your mind to another realm. Great author, great book, great job!!!

An Anthology for Lovers of Speculative Fiction and More!

"The Gifts of the Magi" is a varied collection from seemingly all regions of the speculative fiction landscape. There is something here for everyone, even those who do not normally read spec fic. Mystery lover? There's a couple stories for you. Romance reader? There's one or two stories with romantic entanglements, though nothing explicit. Do you like to read something so artsy that you can barely tell which way is up? You're covered, too.

One of my favorite aspects of the collection is that I've now met dozens of characters from existing series. So, when I want to spend more time with the steampunk detectives or the outlander bounty hunters, I can look up their other novels and stories and get to know them better.

Why did give this book 4 stars instead of 5? When I hear "holiday collection", I expect Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, or Kwanzaa to be central to the plot of the story in some way. There are a few stories that had no tie to the holidays or a tie so superficial that if you were not told that the scene took place on Christmas Eve you wouldn't have known. That said, the stories are so strong and entertaining that I'm keeping this review at 4 stars.

I strongly recommend this new collection of fantastical short stories.

I'm glad I was able to come across this book and you can't be too safe with the way this disease is spreading right now. I think it's time to be proactive and those that are ignorant to the fact that this disease is running rampant are going to be the first to get it.

I was relieved to find out what I found out about this devastating illness and I am confident that my chances of being consumed by it are greatly diminished. You can never be too careful these days and having a plan may save your life.

I would suggest buying this if you are like me and like to be made aware of the steps needed to battle Ebola.

Her flamboyant beauty captured by photographer Berenice Abbott made her an admired figure among American expatriates such as Gertrude Stein and William Somerset Maugham. Her archives bombed during World War II, she was largely forgotten when one-time peers like Le Corbusier were lionized as visionaries. Rediscovered in 1960, she is today a celebrated pioneer of modern design.
