About the Author
Dr. Stephen A. Benjamin was born and raised in New York City. He received his A.B. degree from Brandeis University, and his D.V.M. and Ph.D. degrees from Cornell University, and he’s a board-certified veterinary pathologist. He has been a university teacher, researcher, and administrator, and is currently Professor Emeritus at Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. His interests in human and animal health are reflected in most of his short stories and novels. He lives in Colorado with his wife, and enjoys traveling, especially visiting his family, fishing, golf, skiing, cooking, and writing fiction.

Fun romp of a space opera, appropriate for teens and adults

This is a light, mostly non military space opera, with a small touch of romance, and a lot of interesting 'animal' puzzles. The author, and the main character!, use their veterinarian backgrounds to create and solve issues with various aliens. This makes for a really unusual and interesting twist on standard space operas. The other interesting twist is the main character's home planet and its problems. It is a planet long ago settled by Jewish settlers which has now become dominated by religious fanatics. The vet not only needs to help any and all other planets but also his own. This is a light weight romp without a lot of technological details, very low fighting level or violence, but still has some other elements of space opera. These include a special ability given to the main character, intriguing aliens, and more. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a fun, interesting but light space opera this is the one.
Note: the author seems to be moving into episodic sequels unfortunately. I hope he will soon write a full length novel instead.

Humor, Creatures, and Religious Fanatics. Oh, My!

What a mix. Humor is a precious commodity in science fiction. Galactic Circle gives the reader a wry take on Cy Berger's problems with banishment from his home world his sentence to spy for the religious sect he hates. His journey takes him across the galaxy taking care of intelligent and non-intelligent beings with different genetic backgrounds from dragons to bee hives.

Benjamin takes advantage of his veterinary background to create a highly original plot line and a variety of species specific illnesses which Berger cures to create good-will ... and to survive in some cases. The main characters are well-rounded individuals, including Ruthie, the AI, who is every bit as intelligent as Hal ... but with a distinctive character of her own. The tension between Cy's religious fanatic handler, who seeks to conquer new worlds for his faith, and Cy tightens with each chapter, keeping this reader turning pages well past her intended bedtime.

A delightful book to curl up with on a winter's night.

A Classic Space Romp

I was lucky enough to snag an advanced copy of this novel, and was hooked from the first page. Galactic Veterinary Service has everything you look for in a space opera: galactic adventure, swashbuckling heroes, original and interesting "monsters," and even a love story.

Cy Berger, the empath with a head for Veterinary Science, and a heart for adventure, is one of those characters who you immediately fall on love with. I can't wait for the sequel.

Some would call Trekking to Ocmulgee, The Spoken World, a romantic historic novel recounting the tale of a young Muskogee man and a young Muskogee woman, separated by events driven by the expansion of Spanish missions into central Georgia, only to be eventually re-united. But that that would neither be the whole story, nor would it explain the circumstances in which these young Native Americas find themselves. To understand those circumstances, and the thoughts, emotions, adaptations and actions they must take to accomplish that re-uniting requires a much larger understanding of conditions facing the Muskogee Confederation of related villages and towns that occupied central and southwest Georgia, and parts of Alabama and Tennessee in the year 1700 and the years immediately following. Briefly, the Muskogee occupied an area pressed by the Spanish in west Florida allied with the Apalachee, the French at Mobile allied with the Choctaw, the Cherokee in the Appalachian Mountains and the English in the Carolinas. The Spanish pushed missions from Florida into Georgia, the French supported slaving raids on the Muskogee by the Choctaw and Cherokees with the slaves being sold to Caribbean sugar plantations and to plantations in Virginia and the Carolinas. Successfully negotiating trade agreements with English traders in Charleston helped keep the Muskogee nations viable and the interactions of the traders helped mitigate some of the slaving raids on the Muskogee. However, the pressure from the Spanish to the south threatened not just the freedom of the Muskogee, but threatened their spiritual beliefs as well. To this end, a rebellion by the Muskogee begun with the burning of a Spanish mission and continued by the overall Chief of the Muskogee, Hopoyetly at Coweta resulted in a series of raids by the Muskogee that essentially wiped out the Apalachee tribe and much of the Spanish influence in west Florida. It is the beginning of this rebellion where this story starts. For the next several years, this story tracks the rebellion and its aftermath through the eyes of Little Bird and Morning Light, later known as Yvtohke and Jillie. Both are entrusted with key roles in restoring the spiritually important Adjik Hata Clan in the story, however, an evil influence is rising among the Cherokees, although they are not aware of it at first, whose goal is to prevent the restoration of the Adjik Hata Clan of the Muskogee. As a result, Yvtohke and Jillie must deal with war and its effects, politics, human nature, the culture of the Muskogee and the other Native American groups, the traders and many other influences to accomplish their goals.

Ty Bard is a gifted writer with a true historian’s knowledge of the Muskogee culture and an apparent
need to make others aware of it. As much as anything, this book is a detailed look into Muskogee
culture, circa 1700 with daily life and rituals described in great detail. In similar detail are the mental and emotional musings of the characters, the descriptions of Indian warfare against the Spanish and the Apalachee and the use of Muskogee language terms throughout. Although well written throughout with only a very few minor editing issues, I found the level of detail and the use of the native language to be both informative and tedious. In truth, as wonderful as I found the story and as interesting as I found the culture of the Muskogee during that time, I found the book slow and difficult to read. It not a book I would pick up unless I had a lot of time to spend reading. However, the inclusion by the author of a Creek-Muskogee Language Guide was a very helpful stroke of genius! The expectation is that “Trekking to Ocmulgee” will expand to two more volumes due to the length and complexity of the story. Readers who are interested in Native American culture and history, and those readers who want a great story and have the time to deal with the complexity of the narrative, will want to watch for the release of the next two volumes. Meanwhile, the author, Ty Bard has done a great job with both the history and the narrative. Kudos!

A great historical fiction account of early eastern Native American life during a period of great change. This is a first-person tale from the viewpoint of two characters whose stories intertwine. The book has beautifully descriptive and in-depth accounts of life at that time, illustrating village and family life and the devastation of wartime. There is a lot of story-telling, and wonderful light-hearted character interactions which relate across time to everyone. Recommend!

Intriguinh tale of one of the most neglected members of our society - Southeast Native Americans

This is an historical tale about the people most neglected in the US then and now - the Southeast Native Americans. They were the first to have to deal with Europeans - and ended up victims of an ethnic cleansing effort. Bard does a touching job of showing the denigration of the tribes through the eyes of a young girl who fights to survive while saving the sacred wisdom of an important medicine man. You'll have a good time reading it, and come out a bit more knowledgeable.

Michael (Mike) Tipton is a singer, songwriter, and entertainer along with being the author of the series “Last Hope.” He lives in Panama City Beach, Florida with his wife Gay. He served in the Marine Corps and has had several career paths. He has traveled and lived in several countries and has a very different view of the world than most. Mike has been a lifelong fan of fantasy fiction and loves the art of storytelling. He has a third installment of “Last Hope” in progress and hopes to have it out early spring of 2015.

DID they live???

Great book and author has got me feeling like I"m fighting those growlers along side his characters that I actually have gotten attached to!! Looking forward to more of the "journal." This author has coined the way of "old world" ( before growlers) and "new world" How people pull together in this book is astounding! I enjoyed this book ! Thanks! Now on to Last Hope 3 !!!

Wow blown away great story

I was completely blown away by the story. I haven't had a chance to read rising shadows yet much because I'm not a fan of reading e-books. After reading chasing shadows I may have to rethink this. I really like her character development and I felt at the end of the story I had a better understanding of who the characters were, even though I'm sure we're first introduced in rising shadows. In a way I felt her style had been influenced a little by Dickens. There are parts of the story but jumped out at me and Ashley did a fantastic job of using words to paint and extremely vivid picture. There were points in the story that I could see what Will, Sarah, and Lisardo look like. One of those books that I was unable to put down I just wanted to turn my page to see what happens next. Well done an excellent read I would recommend this book to anyone. Absolute plant writing and I can't wait to see what the next books are by this incredibly talented author. I really can't stop raving about how great this book was I thoroughly enjoyed it

Great romance/exciting adventure!

CHASING SHADOWS kept me guessing, there were lots of surprises, and it was overall a good and exciting adventure/romance. It was kind of too long for me, but that's just my personal preference. I felt a bit like the first half dragged somewhat, with the plot seeming to get lost behind a lot of emotions and the love triangle, and a lot of stuff seemed to sort of come out of nowhere. But the final third picked up considerably and turned awesome and very exciting and I absolutely loved it!

I loved the romance--it was great and went back and forth between being breathtakingly sweet, to me wanting to bang the heads of both parties against the nearest hard thing and go ''seriously guys, don't be idiots!'' But that of course is half the fun of romance tales--we like a little exasperating on the side with our heart-sighing romance. ;) (I personally didn't like the love triangle part of it though--nothing against this book in particular, I'm just not a big fan of love triangles in general. But I know many people would enjoy it so that's fine and it was fairly well done.)

I had a hard time connecting with Sarah, the main character, since most of the time she drove me batty by being stupid. But I think that's likely just me, and I have a feeling most readers would like her better. And I still wanted her to win, of course! She did grow on me, eventually.

Can we just take a moment to talk about Will now? Will was awesome and fabulous and I loved him a ton and he is one of my favorite characters now. He's basically a big broken strong huggable bundle of epic, the perfect mix of a dark-guy and a hero and an all-around great guy who is just awesome and can be really sweet at times too, though you wouldn't know it with his shell. His struggles and confused moments only made him more endearing. His caring and bravery and amazingness... just yes. He's a mean shot with a bow, too. ;) Will is basically the main reason I really liked this book. It's well worth reading just for him!

The Spaniard was brilliantly done and I won't give anything away but it was fascinating how he was written. I have very complicated thoughts/emotions about the whole thing that I'm still working on sorting out.

The other characters were all very well drawn and realistic-feeling, from Edith to Karen and the Professor and the Joneses (yay, Seth!) to characters like Robert. Particularly Robert. Yes. That is all I will say. (Also Richard. I really liked Richard! Even though he was sort of random. I somehow thought he'd be more important and now I really want to read more about him! I'm weird like that. :P)

The medieval setting was really neat. It was that sort of ''gritty'', ''realistic'' sort of medieval that is more realistic than my taste would prefer, but I most people seem to like their medieval settings to be that way, so... *shrug* The whole book felt very REAL though. In fact, at times, it felt so real that it felt a bit more like real life than like a novel--like this was really happening to the main character. Very real emotions and problems and little day-to-day details instead of everything being streamlined and so dramatic and novel-like, if you know what I mean. Which was very different, somehow, and made me think about it, so even if I wasn't used to that sort of feeling, it was actually kind of cool.

The level of detail was awesome! I just loved how detailed everything was. I could see and feel everything and felt perfectly immersed. I loved the lovely settings, like the castle with its ornate feeling at times, and the cold but beautiful snowy forest... just yes! I loved being immersed, and it was amazing to feel so much a part of the world. I definitely felt like I was there.

It had its moments of fun and hilarity and I found myself laughing aloud a few times, and quoting some particularly wonderful lines that were funny, brilliant, or well-written. Points for that!

I wish the slight hints of Robin Hood stuff had been more explored (maybe more is in Book 1 and 3? I can hope! :)) but most of what there was, was cool! Even small hints are a lot of fun!

A few other little thoughts:
-I really disliked the whole Jade plot though. I can't really say much about it because of spoilers but... just no.
-I definitely feel like this is for older readers, higher teens and up maybe, just for some general content.
-There were occasional touches of Christianity, for those wondering if it was there.
-I haven't read much time travel, but this one was fairly neat! Interesting to read, anyway.

This is a sequel, and I haven't read the first book yet, so maybe some things are more explained in that. Mostly though there were enough hints about the events of the first that I didn't feel lost, so you don't have to read it in order to ''get'' this one. I'm certainly now curious about it though and want to read the prequel--and the third one (when it comes out) to find out what happens! But at the same time, though I do want more, CHASING SHADOWS still wrapped up fairly well. It left me feeling happy at the end.

Overall, it wasn't a five-star favorite for me, but it earned its four stars and I absolutely loved the last third of the book! Mostly, the problems I had with it were my personal preference, and I feel like many others would enjoy it more.

If you like time-travel, medieval tales, realistic-feeling settings with a bit of grittiness, a love triangle and sweet romance, with a touch of Robin Hood and intrigue and adventure in castle rooms and snowy forests, this is the book for you.

so I read way too fast and don't stop to enjoy it well enough

I just finished the book and I LOOOOOOOOOVED it! I was tantalized by so much romance and was gripping the edge of my seat at the action scenes -- and it was delightfully so much longer than the first. It was creative and entertaining, and melted my heart on occasion. I am about to do my customary re-read, now that I whipped through it so quickly the first time (I can hardly wait to get to the end the first time I read a book, so I read way too fast and don't stop to enjoy it well enough. So here I go, back to Serimone!). SIgh. I

About the Author
Kathleen Parker has been riding horses for 30 years and currently runs a small thoroughbred racing stable. She attended Mount Ida College in Newton, MA and obtained an Associate of Science degree in Occupational Therapy. While in New England, Kathleen competed with her intercolliegiate equestrian team. Phantom Hoof Prints is Kathleen's first novel. Born and raised in Johnstown, PA, she and her husband live in Bethel, PA with an assortment of horses, dogs, and cats.

written for adolescence will be loved by most teenagers

Kathleen Parker's novel, Phantom Hoof Prints, written for adolescence will be loved by most teenagers, especially those who are fond of horse stories. Anyone else who remembers their own youth will find this novel fascinating because of the shared experiences we had as teenagers growing up, compared to the many beautifully developed characters in the story.

The novel has a multiplicity of themes, moods, atmospheres, and all of the elements of fine narrative. It is a story of first time relationships, horse back riding competitions, mysterious legends, haunted houses, spirits of the ancients on sacred ground, a mystical reverence for the natural world, along with many harrowing, heart stopping, adventures.

This is a good read for anyone who likes fine fiction.

Authentic Page Turner!!! You will NOT put this one down.

I read this book recently on a friend's recommendation. When I say it's a real page turner, I mean just that. Kathleen Parker does a great job illustrating the bonds of friendship. While I myself am not a horse enthusiast, I propose that you do not have to have a high interest in equestrian related topics to find the antics of the protagonists captivating. This story is very well written, has great imagery, metaphor, and even dualism. Additionally, the story is full of surprises that will bring a smile to anyone's face. I would recommend this book for both young people and adults alike. Personally, I am an extremely critical reader. It was difficult to find anything bad to say about Phantom Hoof Prints. I plan on purchasing copies for my nieces and nephews this Christmas!!

A Classic Mystery and Equestrian Adventures makes for entertainment well spent

Phantom Hoof Prints was written by a friend of mine who included me in the book. Kathy's recollection of imagery from the past put me right back to the 80's at a time she was a teenager. I grew up and adored my time spent at the farm and all my adventures with friends and horses. I am a mentor in Kathy's book and enjoyed reading of every experience the friends go through. The mystery and fantasy in the book surrounding the Oppie mansion and Indian legends of the past make it a thrill to read. The barn, mansion, trials, and roads are all real places situated in the Johnstown area, including Shaffer's Tastee Freeze( Simply the Best)!!
