A Beautifully Written Story

The Butterfly Crest is a mesmerizing
story, set in a vivid and imaginative world. Every scene and character is rich with detail, as ancient mythologies and Japanese culture are intricately interwoven throughout the story. It's nothing short of amazing!

The author does a great job delving deeply into the subject matter -- so much so, that at times it took away from the narrative of the story, but not enough to put me off. I was too intrigued to stop reading. And I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the charming main character!

Elena Vicen has lead a seemingly ordinary existence, when her life suddenly takes a turn, and changes in ways she's altogether unprepared for. After receiving a letter, she learns of a mysterious inheritance, tucked away in a safety deposit box. And from there Elena is swept away from the wonderful City of New Orleans, to the breathtaking backdrop of Japan.

In acquiring the contents of the box, Elena sets off a chain of events, and is thrust into the midst of an ancient war between deities in the various pantheons. But the real mystery is shrouded in a daunting journey through the realm of the afterlife, as Elena discovers her role in an ancient prophecy that could alter the course of the war. Through it all, Elena shows strength and courage, pushing forward for answers, despite her fears and lack of knowledge in how to deal with this mysterious world of mythology!

I absolutely loved this novel, and was captivated by the different gods, spirits, and demons from different cultures, coexisting together. This is a complex and imaginative story, complete with unique and engaging characters. Any fan of mythology and fantasy will be riveted by this story!

An Intriguing and Enjoyable Read

Vanrell is a gifted writer with a creative imagination welling out of a deep knowledge of the mythologies of Japan, the Celts, and the Greco/Roman pantheon. I love writing that brings mythology to life in a modern setting.

The Butterfly Crest builds on the classic plot line, the quest. The protagonist, Elena, is an unhappy young lawyer who lacks real purpose in her life. Orphaned at age seven, she was raised by her mother's best friend. Elena has structured her life with a rigidity that speaks to her need for control, yet in her work life she has no control at all. One day she is summoned to return to Japan, where she was born and where her parents were killed, in order to receive a previously unknown part of her heritage.

Elena and her former guardian spend an uneventful few days in Japan. (The author provides an in depth description of major historical sites in Kyoto, which many will enjoy but others may find lengthy.) Then on what was to be her last day in Japan, she receives her inheritance and all hell breaks loose figuratively and literally.

Elena is guided through the thrilling, intense events that follow by a mysterious man she had met before leaving for Japan. I will not give away his true identity, but I will say that you will never think of Hades and Tartaras in the same way again. The plot takes many twists and turns along the way. Among her companions on her quest, because all quests require companions, are twins who provide comic relief, a terrifying vixen, a Japanese demon (who has a thing for the vixen), and a formidable and protective Japanese monster.

This is a terrific read. It does get bogged down in a lot of description at times, but the descriptions are well written and provide a visual and physical anchor for a fantastical adventure story.

I always love a book with compelling female main character. The Butterfly Crest instantly sweeps you into a deliciously intriguing tale that crosses both continents and to the afterlife. The detail that Vernell artfully employs, paints a compelling backdrop for this page turning book.

When you see "DK" on the outside you know something good is on the inside.

At first glance this looks like a coffee table book. My coffee table would give up the cat for this book.

There are many Photography books that usually focus on the authors/editor's favorite people or subjects. These are good but you always find something missing. This book however only sorted by time has just about every popular picture you could think of. Unlike just a coffee table book we get pretty in-depth information of the photos, photographic methods, the photographers and the subject of the photos.

If you have any favorites there is a good chance you will time them. There is a better chance that you will find new favorites. One of mine is under the heading of China's new wave there is a picture of a library that makes me feel at home.

It comes with a glossary and index.

The plain man sees that the drama of his time has gradually passed from one phase to another of complexity in thought coupled with simplicity of incident, and it occurs to him that just one further step is needed to make something final in British art. We seem to be just on the threshold of something which would give Englishmen in the twentieth century something of the fullness that characterized the Elizabethans: but somehow or other our dramatists hesitate to cross that threshold. It cannot be that their powers are lacking: it can only be some timidity or self-torture which it is the business of the plain man to exorcise.

A poor attempt at a reprint

This book is a facsimile - of which I am usually a fan - but it is a very bad one. It is a massively wide book, which makes it inconvenient to carry, but the most depressing thing about it is the quality of the copying. Each back looks like it has been run through a 30$ copy machine someone picked up at a thrift store. There is clear shading, splotching, and ugliness that could have been avoided if the publisher had used a digital clean-up software like that used in the Toronto and California libraries editions.

Breaking Into Publishing is the book I wish someone had handed me the day after graduating college. Written in a friendly, no-nonsense, direct way, this book provides an up-close-and-personal, honest look at the world of publishing and how to most effectively navigate the industry from the outside in.
Having worked in the editorial department of an academic textbook publisher for several years, I appreciated the author’s emphasis on the competitiveness for jobs within the industry and the directive to go the extra mile to secure a foot in the door. Entering the world of publishing takes drive, a demonstrated understanding of the current trends within the field, and most importantly, the ability to say ‘yes’ to a position or internship that, at first glance, may not be your ideal job. The book covers all of this and more, and the content debunks popular misconceptions of the roles and responsibilities tied to most publishing jobs. This book would be an excellent tool for a recent college graduate to gain a sense of the area within publishing they hope to specify. The chapters provide a detailed breakdown of everything from the various types of publishing to the roles and responsibilities of the many job positions within each.
I found the ‘Interview Questions’ to be the most advantageous and unique tool. The suggested interview questions force readers to think outside the box in order to best prepare for an interview and are questions that will surely give a reader a leg up in the interview process.

This book is a valuable guide to starting a career in publishing. His tone authoritative yet reassuring, Kevin Sullivan separates the many aspects of this diverse industry into easily understandable (but never simplistic) sections. The result is a combination of straightforward discussion of more general topics (interviewing, gaining experience) and in-depth analysis of particular dimensions of publishing (the specifics of book, magazine, journal, newspaper publishing). The book also addresses the changing face of the industry as newer technologies proliferate. Sullivan covers everything the industry entrant needs to know in a logically organized and concisely written format. He offers helpful suggestions in his “key points” boxes interspersed throughout the text and a useful glossary at the end for quick reference of industry terms. Sullivan’s writing style is easygoing and informal, a perfect complement to his insightful and above all practical advice. As someone who has worked in publishing for thirty years, I recommend this book to those starting out in the field: Sullivan knows his stuff.

Excellent book!

Great book, very useful. It's amazing how the author is able to portrait the whole world of orthodontics in this book. He explains in an excellent way all the very important cases that orthodontists might encounter on a daily basis. I strongly recommend it to anybody else in the field.

Zoe is a character I think we all can relate to in some way: she's mourning her father, angry about having to move, and she's lonely. Her one true friend is her dream-brother, Valentine, who she visits every night. However, something new has invaded their dream world and is starting to affect Zoe's waking world. When Zoe ditches school and wanders aimlessly, she comes upon an old record shop. Now, as her parents were both into music and art, she's drawn in and stumbles onto a very special section of the store. For the right price, Zoe can see her father again...

I absolutely adore the Sandman Slim novels, so when I saw Mr. Kadrey had written a YA novel I was super excited. Mix Gaiman and de Lint with the special Kadrey touch and you have `Dead Set'. With exquisite world-building, well-defined characters, and a beautifully seamless blend of ancient mythology and modern life, 'Dead Set' does not disappoint! As we walk beside Zoe in her travels, we are introduced to the hidden world of Iphigene where the restless dead are ruled by the iron fist and decayed heart of its queen. Zoe brings a ray of hope to a world resigned to its fate and her journey begins to heal not only herself, but the whole of Iphigene. `Dead Set' is a treasure I will enjoy reading many times over!

Excellent young adult supernatural novel by Kadrey

I got a copy of this book through Netgalley(dot)com to review. I have really enjoyed Kadrey’s Sandman Slim series, so I was excited to read a young adult book by him. This was an excellent and creepy read and I really enjoyed it.

Zoe and her mother have moved to the Big City after her father’s death. Things are tough, her mother can’t find work and Zoe is having trouble fitting in at school. Zoe’s only escape are her dreams, where she travels to a different place and visits with her lost brother Valentine. Then Zoe discovers a strange record shop. There the store keeper shows her a record of her father’s soul and allows her to watch it for the price of a lock of hair. Then for the price of a tooth she can actually visit her father in the realm of Iphigene. But as the price gets steeper and Zoe get more and more drawn into Iphigene, the question becomes will she ever escape this dark and deadly alternate world?

This is a very creepy book. The whole idea of a person’s soul being trapped on a record and of the creepy shop keeper asking for parts of Zoe for payment is eerie. The land of Iphigene is even more so. Iphigene is haunted by hungry trapped souls and ruled by Hecate, an evil witch of a character.

Zoe is an interesting character. She has a history of self-inflicted wounds (she was a cutter and struggles with this still) and misses her dad horribly. She is driven by the idea that finding her dad will somehow fix everything even though he is dead. She is also haunted by the dreams of Valentine, a brother she never actually knew. At times in the book Zoe is teetering on the edge of insanity and becomes extremely desperate and reckless.

Zoe’s mother and father are intriguing. They are both very sad characters, but you can tell they love each other and Zoe a lot. They are the epitome of a lot of adults out there. They made decisions in life that they thought were the best decisions to make at the time, but ultimately those decisions made them leave some dream behind and made them very unhappy.

Valentine is fascinating. He is the unborn brother of Zoe and really never got a chance to live in the real world. However, he’s been in Iphigene for a large portion of his life. He has served as a companion and confidant for Zoe throughout her life and now as she journeys to Iphigene he serves as a guide.

The story is fast-paced but not as gritty as the Sandman Slim series, it is definitely more of a young adult novel. That’s not to say there isn’t a lot of edginess here and some disturbing stuff. The way Hecate’s children feed on the lost souls is extremely disturbing. The way Zoe is hunted down by the evil shopkeeper and Hecate is also very creepy. So this is a very darkly creative and intriguing story, just not as violent as the Sandman Slim series.

There is an interesting mystery to be solved here. Zoe has to figure out what Iphigene is and escape it before Hecate can capture Zoe and take over her body. It is definitely a fast-paced and engaging read and I enjoyed it. I also enjoyed that there is a lot of mythology, especially Egyptian mythology, woven into the story.

Overall I liked this book a lot. It was interesting to read a young adult book by Kadrey, he did a good job of making a darkly creative story that was edgy and creepy but still young adult. I enjoyed the complex characters, the absolutely wonderfully dark and creative world of Iphigene, and the fast pace of the story. If you are a fan of Kadrey I definitely recommend you check this book out. If you are a fan of dark and creepy supernatural stories I think you would like this as well.

Dark and entertaining.

Dead Set is a slightly different tale from Richard Kadrey, different than his Sandman Slim stories.

The story is about Zoe, a teenager who has lost her father recently. She's living in an apartment in San Francisco with her mother and the situation is not great. They're both in a period of mourning and their home life is in flux. Zoe is attending a new school away from her friends and adrift. She happens to wander past an odd record shop which leads her on an adventure into a weird world. Yes, that's vague but I'd rather not give the book away.

Dead Set asks a few questions of Zoe and the reader. What would you do if you could have a chance to talk to someone you loved again? Would you take that risk? That's the question that Zoe has to ask herself and I found it really fascinating. What if you have the chance to have some closure? What would you do? Zoe gets the chance to ask that question on her journey in a very visceral world.

Overall, I was surprised how compelled I was to finish this book. I'd recommend highly. A good story from a good author.

Could have been more convincing

In addition to being the third book in the International Bad Boys series, Born To Be Bad is the story of Roman, brother to Isaak whose story is told in Carol Marinelli's The Bride Who Wouldn't. Roman is both bitter and tormented after his wife's death in a drunken car crash, but he's also accustomed to getting his own way so when he asks hotel waitress Milly to spend the night with him he expects her to do just that, and Milly, who has been developing feelings for Roman during his stay at the hotel, is all too willing to take him up on his offer. She is insulted when he pays her for what she thought was a wonderful night of love making, yet she takes his money anyway. I struggled to come to grips with that. Why take the money if it is so offensive? Overall I just wasn't really convinced by this story, which was a shame as I kept feeling there was a promise to be delivered on if only I looked a little harder.

Born to be Bad is book #3 in the International Bad Boys series and sadly it's not my favorite in the series.

Born to be Bad is connected to The Bride Who Wouldn't, where we first meet Roman Zaretsky and his brother Isaak Zaretsky.
Roman is trying to keep a low profile and stay away from the press after the scandal of his wife died in a car accident so he's staying in an hotel in London under a different name. He finds himself very attracted to Milly that works in the exclusive
Club Lounge and he's very attracted to her. The night after Roman's uncle funeral he take Milly to his hotel room for a night of sex. Milly is sure that it was more than sex for Roman but the next day she wakes up and find a note on the bedside table with money for her services since Roman mistakenly thought that she works as a hooker and not just a bartender at the club.

Milly is trying to stay away from Roman so he won't know how much he hurt her but Roman keeps trying to see her again and ask for her forgiveness.

Born to be Bad was a very easy book to read and I read it very fast but I did have a problem with the plot, I felt like some issues weren't dealt with and the ending was very rushed. Maybe the final version of the book was a bit different but I felt like the copy I read was missing some info and I just didn't believe in the HEA between Milly and Roman.

I just didn't like Roman as a hero and I felt that he treated Milly badly and I just didn't feel that he truly loves her.

Still a good entry to the series.

This story was a little weird to start off, but I got into their stories as I kept reading. I didn’t like the idea that he thought she was a prostitute or that she stuck around afterward. But that was part of the story line and it all worked out in the end. It’s good, not great.
