The Rose Box is a short story about a self-doubting character and her journey toward believing in herself.

The main character Alex has been ridiculed and belittled throughout her life by her mother. She’s been told how inadequate she is and how she’ll never amount to anything worthwhile.

The character’s strength of character is briefly highlighted in the story. Ms. Collins doesn’t go into detail about Alex’s life growing up or after this job. She begins the story with Alex’s college graduation and employment by a gentleman to help identify why a rose root is dying.

Alex packs up her things to begin her job with Mr. Gayson’s. As Alex struggles to determine the cause of death and decay she constantly hears her mother’s voice criticizing and telling her how incompetent she is for this job.

Alex is able to overcome her dilemma and help breath new life into the rose bush by reflecting on the positive things she’s achieved in her life.

I look at the withering rose bush as being buried in self-doubt in our lives. Letting it overshadow the positive in our life could possibly ruin dreams to come.

A Short Read with a Message

The Rose Box is a quick read with a simple message: Believe in Yourself, Don't Be Afraid, Listen to Your Heart. The story itself is quite innocent, I would definitely recommend it to my daughter, who is just entering her teen years. It focuses on how a person can determine their own fate, even when those closest to them try to bring them down. I would not recommend it to someone looking for something a bit more meaty to read, though this is not a criticism of the novel, it just had a very young feel to it. The writing is solid and the story is nicely paced. I can envision further installments of this story happening.

The best children's book I have read. You can read this book again and again and each time have something new to talk about with your children. From their own experience of thunder and lightning, to counting, shapes and geometry; football and the bees and honeycombs and so much more. A delightful addition to a youngster's library.

About the Author
Christina Christoforou is a London-based illustrator and artist. She started her career as an art director in Greece before relocating to London, where in 2007 she gained an MA at Camberwell College of Arts. Since then, she has produced a poster of rock star hairstyles and was commissioned by the New York Times to draw hair portraits of the Presidents and First Ladies.

Catherine Ingram is a freelance art historian. She obtained a First Class Honours degree at Glasgow University, where she was a Honeyman scholar. After an MA in 19th-century art at the Courtauld Institute of Art, Catherine became a graduate scholar at Trinity College, Oxford. After finishing her D.Phil, she was made a Prize Fellow at Magdalen College, Oxford. Catherine has taught on the MA course at Christie's and lectured at Imperial College, teaching art history to undergraduate scientists. She has also run courses at the Tate Gallery and was a personal assistant at South London Gallery. She lives with her family in London.

Kitty Hauser is the author of Stanley Spencer in the British Artists series, Shadow Sites: Photography, Archaeology and the British Landscape 1927–1955 and Bloody Old Britain. She is also a contributor to Granta and the London Review of Books. She currently works at the Power Institute at Sydney University.

Big fan of Bacon.

I've been a Bacon fan for as long as I can remember and while I discovered a couple of small facts about him I hadn't known before the book is definitely on the thin side, both physically and content-wise. It's a fun read and if it spurs someone to study further into the mind of a brilliant artist then it will have done an admirable job.

Slow start is foundation for AMAZING novel

Having read a large number of SHTF novels, and all of Joe Nobody's "Holding Their Own" series, I had high expectations for "Secession: The Storm". For the first half of "Storm" I was not very impressed, and felt that maybe the collaboration with Troit had negatively affected Joe's writing. Then the tide turned, and the second half was outstanding, especially the last third. In retrospect, the foundation for the crux of the story really did need to be set up slowly in the first half. All those seemingly disparate scenarios came together, intertwining into an amazing finish. So, Joe will remain near the top of my very short list of top SHTF/TEOTWAWKI authors. I can hardly wait for the sequel. Congrats to the author on another outstanding job!

Another great piece of work associated with Joe Nobody. P.A. Troit must be a secret government clone made from Joe's DNA. Most collaborations have distinct breaks in style and content. That isn't the case here, at least to my mind. These two work well and seamlessly together to create an amazing story full of engaging content and a story arc that keeps your mind trying to race ahead to the potential finish line. And Joe isn't kidding when he says the technology in the book is in use today. The rifle system mentioned is actually called Tracking Point(he changed the name but the .338LM mentioned goes for $27,500!!!) www.tracking-point.com if you're curious or just wealthy and bored. I compare P.A. to Joe not to highlight Joe's accomplishments but to acknowledge P.A.'s ability to stand shoulder to shoulder with him. Excellent work by both.

In all, the plot devices for the secession of Texas are plausible and the seemingly distinct story arcs are brought back together toward the end for a satisfying conclusion. The aspect I appreciate most about the story is the authors addressing some of the nuts-and-bolts of a potential secession process. Many secessionist(I am one) get caught up in the "pie in the sky" ideology of Texas secession, without considering the thousands of issues that would have to wrestled to bed for secession to be viable and successful. Thankfully, Joe and P.A. did not drone on about the wishful thinking aspects; instead, they highlight a few of the political and functional aspects of the process. I respect that approach far more than the "screw it, we're out" mindset. I would like to see a second installment with Zach(Texas Ranger) taking center stage again, perhaps thwarting more conspiracy, subterfuge, and espionage. Of course, they would have to spice it up with a potential competition for Zach's attention between Cheyenne and a certain spindly legged Houston detective.

Sorry for droning on but I didn't want to give too much away in my review, or dismiss what I liked about the book. In short, it's worth the purchase and doesn't disappoint with it's typical Joe-Nobody-caliber detail of action and suspense. I just wish I could more easily pinpoint P.A.'s direct contributions and give more credit where it is due; but, as I said, this is a very well written collaboration between two "knot-tight" authors. Great job, you two!

No con's only pro's for Joe's new book. I haven't had the pleasure of reading Ms Troit's writings before but will in the future. In all a great start to what looks to be an exciting new direction from the perspective of a gradual downturn of society and not the "flip of the switch" as I usually read.

They each have their own agendas as well as a force pulling them together. S.K. Cross has done it again, drawing us in and leaving us salivating for more. Disturbing Thriller That Makes You Anxious for Part 2!

I was enthralled by this thriller set in Seattle. I typically don't read scary books and yet I couldn't stop reading this as it was fast paced, wonderfully descriptive and set in my favorite city! The author creates a disturbing plot with gory and frightening scenes. I want to read Part 2 as soon as it comes out as I want to know if Dru and Ana are successful in taking down the cruel Dr. Red!

Really good writing from a first time author. 4 Stars definitely. I would have liked to know more about some if the characters because I enjoyed them but felt I didnt know enough background. However in a recent interview I read from the author she notes that more is revealed in book 2! :)

About the Author

Solange Peters, MD-PhD, PD-MER, is in charge of the thoracic malignancies program in the Department of Oncology of the University of Lausanne and active in building a translational program in collaboration with the molecular oncology laboratory directed by Prof. D. Hanahan and Prof. E. Meylan as well as the Ludwig Institute. Her main field of interest is new biomarker discovery and validation in preclinical and clinical settings. She is also heavily involved and interested in developing multimodality trials for locally advanced NSCLC. She is co-chair of the Swiss lung cancer research group (SAKK) and Scientific Coordinator as well as Chair of the Informatics Committee of the European Thoracic Oncology Platform (ETOP). She has been elected the Swiss national representative of ESMO in 2013.

Dr Benjamin Besse is a cancer specialist, Head of the Thoracic Oncology Unit at the Institut Gustave Roussy in France. His main research interests are application of molecular abnormalities to personalize treatment, phase I trials in thoracic tumors and thymic tumors. He has been the main Investigator of more than 30 phase I and phase II trials in the past 5 years. He coordinates the French network for thymic malignancies. He is associate editor of European Respiratory Journal. He was the coordinating author for the ESMO Guidelines Working Group on Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) and is Chair of the systemic treatment part of the 2013 ESMO Consensus Conference on Lung Cancer. He is member of the administrative board of the French Intergroup for Thoracic Oncology (IFCT) and Member of ASCO, ESMO and IASLC.

Great Survival Series, A Must Read.

This is the third book in the Darkness Reigns series. The book starts as the hero is wounded, and fighting for life. The story unfolds as strangers come to his aid, and provide basic care until his family and friends arrive to provide the more advanced care. From a prepping/survival perspective, the information covered in this book, as with the others, leaves even seasoned preppers scrambling to cover gaps in their own plans. Honestly, this is a reoccurring theme between all of the books; an out of the box, practical approach to preparedness. The entire story is realistic, and does not stray from a probable response to survival during a collapse scenario. No fantasy here.

I highly recommend reading all three books. The information gained will fill up a notebook, and will broaden your approach to survival.

Excellent story line. All you who love the stregtic tactics, lots of that. Some very good how to on home made items for protection. Real nice ending that there may be hope for a society so damaged. Plenty of gangs called Takers to fight. Clearly showing some of the problems that an EMP will cause.

All three books were a good read. Well written and always anxious to read the next chapter.

You will find some valuable survival info in this series. Sometimes I wondered if Donald and Francine even read what they produced. Perhaps if the rent was due they just ran it thru spell check and published it. But I did enjoy the series storyline. Makes me realize the need to rethink my compound defense plans

About the Author
Pauline Baird Jones had a tough time with reality from the get-go. After "schooling" from four, yes FOUR brothers, she knew that some people needed love and others needed shooting. Pauline figured she could do both. Romantic suspense was the logical starting point, but there were more worlds to explore, more rules to break and minds to bend. She grabbed her pocket watch and time travel device and dove through the wormhole into the world of science fiction and even some Steampunk.

Now she wanders among the genres, trying a little of this and a lot of that, rampaging through her characters' lives like Godzilla because she does love her peril (when it's not happening to her). Never fear, she gives her characters happy endings. Well, the good characters. The bad ones get justice.

Pauline has published 16 novels. Her latest release is Core Punch: A Baker & Ban!drn Adventure. It is the launch book for An Uneasy Future, a spin-off of Project Enterprise and The Big Uneasy.

The Key is not what you think!

Loved all of the books about the Key. Wonderful characters and just the right amount of suspense and mystery to keep me enthralled. Recommend starting with book one and going in order. The story builds and there is added insight in each book. While you could read the first and be done, go for the gusto as these are really good reading.
